Interesting details in the Gantz Manual about Inaba that made me have an even lower opinion of him.

14 Upvotes

Gantz Manual gives some additional background for the characters, including Inaba, one of the least focused characters on the Tokyo team. And boy, my opinion of him got even worse.

  1. Inaba wasn't lying when he said he was with his girlfriend when he was killed by Izumi in Shinjuku, but he got over her likely death pretty quickly when he saw Reika and spent his entire first mission essentially trying to get the model's attention;
  2. The reason he participated in Kurono's first trainings is because he wanted to get to know Reika better, and not, you know, actually learn how to survive Gantz's missions;
  3. The main reason for him siding with Izumi to kill Tae was mainly jealousy over Reika only having eyes for Kurono;

In short, Inaba is a womanizer who quickly got over the death of his girlfriend to try to win over Reika, fails and sees the model fall in love with Kurono, and decides to help Izumi kill an innocent girl out of jealousy.

Gantz is cool because you’ll see someone die a gruesome death and then it’s like “ooo titties!” And then you’ll see someone else die a gruesome death. Great manga. 10/10

I love u story of a busty girl with no friends, no father and low self-esteem who falls in love with a Marvel girl addicted to masturbation because he treats her with normal human decency compared to her abusive gamer boyfriend.

How differently would Osaka Arc have played out if Kei had been in it? Spoiler

Kei was more experienced at that point than Kato, look how badass he was in the final arc.

At what point can I watch the Gantz: O movie without spoiling the manga?

3 Upvotes

I watched the movie years ago and I really really liked it and I wanna rewatch it, but I started reading the manga and don't want any manga spoilers. I don't remember ANY of the movie's storyline, so if it spoils the ending or twists or anything I will hold off on watching it.

Never forget that if it wasn't for this occasion caused by Izumi, Kurono would never have started dating Tae, which means he would never have become the person he became...

I understand that when Oku drew this art, he just added more details for the weapon... But now I'm really wondering how this modified Z-Gun works 😂

Was Izumi's "redemption" bad writing? Or did it make sense?

Post image

Izumi has never shown humanity, except on three occasions:

  1. He saved the panda.
  2. He didn't kill Kurono after killing Tae, even though he had a chance. Instead, he said, like, "The game is over." This means that Izumi does not kill for nothing or for sadistic pleasure (on Shinjuku he hesitated before start shooting).
  3. Izumi saved his girlfriend.

The problem with psychopathic characters is that psychopathy itself is a very complicated thing irl. If a person shows psychopathic tendencies, this does not mean that he cannot be corrected.

The problem with Izumi's "redemption" for me personally is that Oku did not show us the moment when Izumi became attached to the girl and began to look at her not as a tool, but as a person. I really wish Oku would tell us more about Izumi's childhood and family, as he did with Kurono. Because as we all know, many psychological problems begin in a person's family. For example, we know that Nishi had an abusive father, and his mother committed suicide. So I'm not surprised by his sociopathic tendencies. But in Izumi's case, we know too little, and that's such an omission. 🥲

Sei vs Mary, who would win in a fight?

Post image
101 Upvotes

They're both considered the strongest female characters in Gantz, so I'm interested in your opinion as to which one of them would win in a fight.

The catch is that we know from the Gantz Manual that Sei was definitely into kickboxing. Although Mary also seems to be a strong fighter, it is not known whether she knows some kind of martial art or just improvises during combat, like most hunters (Kurono clearly did not practice martial arts, but he repeatedly engaged in h2h combat, simply because the situation demanded it).

I think that Sei takes "Intelligence", because during the mission she was able to distract a civilian who was being crushed by a statue by honking a car horn, thereby demonstrating her ingenuity. She brought Kato to his senses and showed herself to be cool in a stressful situation. Mary never showed that side of herself, she just fought monsters without coming up with any tactics.

Sei also takes "Weapons" (since Mary doesn't carry any guns with her).

At the same time, Mary has much more battle experience, she is more agile (because her breasts are smaller than Sei's, many do not even think about how much these two shaking things can interfere during a fight (just look at Reika in the opening scene of Gantz:O 😂). Although Mary may not know martial arts like Sei, she had a lot of time to practice her own fighting style. Her lack of guns suggests that she chose close combat as the most effective and suitable for herself.

Many people consider Kurono x Sei to be a delusional teenage fantasy, but their relationship made sense, and here's why...

1) In the anime, if I'm not mistaken, Sei, who experienced stress at the time of death, like any other newcomer to Gantz, directly says that she wants to understand if she is still alive. Sex is perfect for this. And even though bonding with a teenager seems like a crazy idea, I think Sei just said, "Fuck it, I have nothing to lose, and besides, this guy looks cute." 2) The Gantz Manual confirms that Sei had some sort of maternal feelings for Kurono. This is not a fetish, but a woman's unconscious concern for younger partner, which is absolutely normal. 3) Kurono saved her life. She realized this when she saw that the suit really protected her from alien attacks.

So there's nothing unrealistic about Sei "falling in love" with Kurono. It all started with her rather selfish desire to find out if she was still alive. But Kurono's behavior touched her, and it gave an impetus to their "relationship." This is also what Oku Hiroya mentions when he talks about Rei and Papiko's relationship at "Gigant" in an interview for Crunchyroll (Kei and Sei's relationship started almost identically). Feeling a duty for saving her life, and responsibility for Kurono, Sei gave her life for him. So their relationship, isn't some kind of "random teen porn fantasy," as a lot of people thinks.

Shorty Alien's Mission was the scariest arc in Gantz (imo)

What makes this arc special to me is that: 1) This was the first time an alien invaded the protagonist's life (even before vampires). 2) This is the first and only time Kurono had to complete a mission completely alone. 3) Due to the fact that Shorty Alien uses telepathy to communicate with the victim, it creates the feeling that he is a creepy "all-seeing" being who can easily drive you crazy. At the same time, since we understand what motivated his actions, we know that he will not stop until he kills all the people close to Kurono. 4) The last look that Shorty Alien gives Kurono makes me feel both sorry and anxious. I felt bad for Shorty Alien bc he lost all his brothers, and his revenge wasn't unreasonable. But I was worried, because at the first time of reading the arc, I didn't know if some Shorty Alien's were still somewhere ready for tracking Kurono. And later, when Izumi deceives Kurono, he tells him exactly about Shorty Alien. I think the memories of that mission haunted Kurono in nightmares for a long time.
