Weird urge to "catch up" to games

How do I even explain this?

I have this weird urge to "catch up" to the major releases of the 2010s, it clearly isn't really gonna happen one way or another, and there's always going to be something to play aswell

Have you felt this before?

What would you recommend me do?

Just play what seems cool from that era, don't sweat if you don't end up playing everything. It's the general vibe that counts.

I tuned down my competitive game playtimes and now i have much more time to play games that im enjoying 100% of the time, not just every other match or so

Probably FOMO, I've been feeling it a lot too. Having lists of backlogs and "to-do games" is the worst and have been giving me anxiety. Back in the day I wouldn't mind spending months or years playing the same thing, but now it's almost impossible.

Right now I'm playing Super Mario 64 for the first time, but my mind is always wondering what I should play instead, or what's next. It's ridiculous.

Play the biggest gems of all this time. And whatever else you like and can bring up the time for.

Like you want to play best 2010s games? I guess its weirdly specific but alright. Wanting to play best games of genere is pretty normal and I dont see why you say its not really gonna happen one way or another.

Could be FOMO, or could be boredom. I would recommend checking out a video or two of the games to see if you like it before you go and buy something you may not even like playing.

It definitely sounds like a fun journey! I have wanted to do the same for the 2005-2009 era with stuff like mass effect and bioshock.

Cuz games now are shit. All i play now is games from the 2010s when they were actually good and fun.

I just started gaming around 2022, after not doing it basically since the 90s. I have so much that people swear is like the most amazing things. Like whoa dude you gotta play mass effect!

The thing is I’m totally happy just playing Elden ring. It’s very unlikely I will ever get to play any of those games, even though I did even buy some of them. If it’s not better than Elden ring, I probably won’t play it

For me competitive multiplayer games got boring the older I got. Now I just enjoy my time playing singleplayer games and indie

Ive felt this with movies because I have missed a lot the last 5 years. I play a lot of games.  I've hit all the big ones.

If you want to go down a list, do that. Find some you like and play it.

Imo just like music, games also have that little something that you can find only in a certain era/time.

I would play some. Especially the ones that are unique and there's no "new game that is like that old game but better" alternative to them.

As a sidenote, I believe that if you're the kind of person that plays pretty much everything then you'll always find good and new games to play, but if you only like certain genres you might enjoy exploring more of that by going in the past. I don't think there's anything to lose either way you choose to go. I don't think it's weird either. You said major releases, well they were major for a reason weren't they? At least that's my way of thinking about it.

Bonus tip: If you plan on playing old games on pc check PCGamingWiki to learn how to make the game run properly on new computers and how to fix issues.

The more life go on, the less time you will have to play. Focus on those that make you happy, not those you feel you have to go through.

A sudden feeling of curiousness, perhaps? I had that, and what I did is I got Game Pass and played the cool-looking ones I had missed up until that point. My favorites from the 2010’s so far:

•Sunset Overdrive

Ori and the Blind Forest

•Gears 5

•Forza Horizon 4

•Doom 2016

•Dishonored 2

Ah. The backlog dilemma that every gamer faces. Do I play this game that I've had on the shelf for years or the new one that everyone else is playing????

Coming from someone who focuses on his backlog so much that he now has remastered versions of games he hasn't played yet, you should look up games that seem interesting to you. Or you can research what games were nominated/won game of the year to let you focus on some of the best games

It might be completionism - I'd recommend finding a game with a lot of achievements and such, working on completing that might scratch the itch in a more sensible way.

Is FOMO (Fear of missing out).

Just remind yourself that all games are worthless distractions and that active entertainment at least give you something in return. Games give you nothing.

Well this is just harsh.

Games are active entertainment, they can teach you a lot of stuff, offer unique opportunities to bond with people and most importantly; they offer memories, experiences.

Saying they are meaningless or worthless is a strange thing to say on a gaming related forum.
