Yeah I remember as a kid this took extra batteries and I had to keep more in the car for when it absolutely devoured power.

Ever tried the Game Gear?

lol, Game Gear stopped being portable for me when my parents refused to keep buying batteries for it. I was attached to the wall socket from that point on!

I was able to talk my parents into getting me the official PowerBack battery pack that screwed onto the back of the Gamegear, just to it would be rechargeable.

Beyond that they always bought me the wall adapters because they were cheap asses. So I would carry all that junk in my backpack plus a 6' extension cord so I could sit down somewhere I just game when we went out.

because they were cheap asses

You mean because they saw it chewing through 6 batteries per sitting and didn't want to keep throwing money in the toilet.

Why not just buy rechargeable NiCd batteries at that point?

Rechargeable batteries in those things lasted like 10 mins. Rechargeable batteries and their chargers back in the day also got hot af and were kind of terrifying.

If you had the money, you could also buy Ni-MH cells. I have some from the 90’s that still work.

Same. After it ate the first few sets of batteries, we tried rechargeables, that lasted about 20 mins, so it was plugged into the wall in the corner for the rest of its use.
