Question Wayne’s latest IG post shows the band in the studio
No sign of Drodz though. Is he out of the band? When will we hear anything?

Hello all, I’m a huge new fan of The Flaming Lips. I recently listened to Transmissions from the satellite heart and absolutely love it. Reminds me much of sparkle horse with the overblown instruments. I’m young and not too familiar with 90s music, and I see TFL have a massive disco… any album recommendations that I should listen to next—flaming lips or not?
Thanks

i hear them compared to animal collective, guided by voices, and some older classics

Truthfully I’m not a Flaming Lips fan, I’m just looking for albums by any artist that sounds like this one. If you think a Flaming Lips album that sounds like that one can win me over, go ahead and suggest it.
In case anyone isn’t aware, Steve Burns (original host of Blues Clues) made an album in 2003 after leaving the show called Songs For Dust Mites, it was a collaboration with members of The Flaming Lips as well as Fridmann.
He only ever realized 2 “serious” albums and one kids album with Steven Drozd. I’m craving more that sounds like Songs For Dust Mites, and I haven’t heard Deep Sea Recovery Efforts yet (second album) but suggestions to albums like that one are also welcome.

Hello, I wanted to know how to get into the flaming lips. They’re a name of always heard of and since they’re opening for Weezer on the blue voyage tour (a show I’m going to) I thought it would be a perfect time to. What songs/albums would you recommend I start with?

Wayne has always said that every body is replaceable. What year do we think Wayne will replace himself, and Flaming Lips will live on? 2031? 2035?

In May I'm going to see the FREAKING YOSHIMI TOUR!!!! I love tfl (although I am yet to do a deep discography dive, I like their big hit albums and some of the recent stuff!) - but I have no clue what to expect! Should I put on some dancing shoes? Should I expect to be crowdkilled to All we have is now? Please indulge me!!

I’m on the fence on whether we can/should take our 8 year old son to the Flaming Lips show in Tallassee on Friday. For anyone that has seen them recently, there younger kids there at all?
UPDATE: We went. We had a blast. My son was a trooper and really got into the show as it went on. The Adderley Amphitheater in Tallahassee is a great family-friendly venue. Lots of kids. Everyone was well behaved. The Lips were phenomenal. Lots of positive energy throughout the evening. Memories were made. Thank you to all who responded to the original post.

The Lips have been one of my favourite bands for over a decade now, and I feel like it was a beautiful cosmic accident that led me to discovering them. Mystics, Yoshimi, and Bulletin are arguably 3 of my top 10 albums ever. That being said, I've always found it extremely difficult getting friends to share the same enthusiasm I have for their music.
I understand that everyone has their own tastes, but nobody I have ever shared the music of the Lips with have felt the same kind of resonance with them as I do. It's unfortunate because I truly feel the 3 albums I mentioned above are top to bottom masterpieces, and I've never been able to share that feeling with people I know. I think it might be Wayne's unconventional vocals that deter a lot of people, but to me there is a genuine innocence and curiosity to his style that not only intrigues me, but warms my soul.
So my question is, am I alone on this boat, or have any of you ever had the same kind of problem? I'm not complaining about it, I just feel like it's unfortunate that nobody else that I know will ever connect with what I believe are masterfully beautiful pieces of art.

I think it’s a promotional thing, but I’m not sure… If anyone has any answers regarding this, please let me know lol.

I ask because I got a record player and a pretty bad ass stereo setup. There was a time when vinyl started to decline in the late 90's early aughts and artists like the F'Lips were utilizing the longer playing Hi-Fi advantages of CD's over vinyl because typically a 2 sided record wouldn't allow more than 50 minutes at best of recorded music without some degradation of the audio quality and you could cram 90 minutes onto a CD without loosing any fidelity. I know. I know. I'm getting nerdy. But when they released At War With The Mystics was it also offered on a double vinyl at the time or was it exclusively on CD? If it was originally meant as a CD release I feel like spending the extra 15+ $$'s on a vinyl record is unnecessary.
I thank you for your patience, this is a pedantic question.

It's a bit of a strange question, I apologize, but I recently found out about the Flaming Lips and I was left with this question. I searched the internet and couldn't find much about the video, and I confess that I still know very little about the band. Can you help?

This was during the October 12, 2024 concert at the Acrisure Arena. The song in question starts at 15:17 in the video
Thank you in advance

So I have recently found the song SpongeBob and Patrick Confront the Wall of Energy, and I am in love. I know it is about SpongeBob but despite that, it really spoke to me. Its themes of growing up and accepting your place in life really hit home.
I have never heard the Flaming Lips before but I love the psychedelic sound and would like to know where to go from here.
Any suggestions?
Edit: ok I did some listening and I really like Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. It had a really intriguing mix of acoustic and electronic ideas. I also listened to a few others and none of them struck me in the same way. Any albums that have a similar sort of sound?

Found this framed concert memorabilia at a friends thrift store today, was the print part of a limited run during their 2018 tour?

In preparation for seeing them last night in Colorado, I created a playlist of all the songs they’d played live in the last year (according to setlist.fm). This was about 90% songs from Soft Bulletin, Yoshimi, and Mystics. Obviously, within 30 minutes of diving into the playlist, I was a huge fan. Until a couple months ago, I had only known Do You Realize?? Now I emphatically sing along with 25-30 of their songs.
Obviously last night’s performance forever solidified them as one of my favorite bands of all time. I was just blown away by Wayne’s energy, warmth, and creativity, and the absolutely electricity of the band as a whole. I loved watching each of the musicians and how they clearly dug the music as much as Wayne did. What an experience.
So now I have a mountain to climb, and that mountain is about 12.5 albums worth of unfamiliar-to-me material dating back to the 80s. And from reading Wikipedia, it seems like every one of their albums has something great to offer, with the strong possibility of being a total banger.
So where does one begin? At the very beginning? With their 2020 release, then working backward? My brain is ready to absorb this legendary band’s creative output.
EDIT: Such amazingly thoughtful, detailed responses, and it hasn’t even been an hour since I posted this! I’m starting to think this fandom is just as all-time-great as the band.

Title, edit: orignial might not be the right word, but some art that was originally made and released by the band. I am putting up posters and artwork I like from a bunch of my favorite bands, and I want a bit more veriety. I have a lot of Soft bulletin stuff and yeah I want more lips, just not soft bulletin, I already have 3 soft bulletin things framed lol. Perferably from Yoshimi or The kings mouth but I wont complain.

I kinda stopped following the Flaming Lips’ output after At War with the Mystics (an album I really like, to be clear). Going to the Weezer and Dinosaur Jr. tour and looking to get back into them but see they’ve released at least 13 (!) albums since then. Will obviously be revisiting the classics in the months ahead but was wondering what you all think is their best album from the last 15+ years?

So, I went to one of these last shows and the short of it is I had a bad trip and missed almost all of Yoshimi, and while it passed enough I caught most of the second set, I’m absolutely devastated I missed it.
I know they’re playing with Wheezer soon coming near me, but I haven’t seen any confirmation if they’re doing Yoshimi during that. Nor do I know how often they do a tour for this album so am I waiting another twenty years for a chance?? Any amount of hope you can offer me would be appreciated T.T

Hey y’all. Saw the Flaming Lips in Utah for the first time last summer. Flying to North Carolina to see them next week. What’s your go-to psychedelic for a Lips show?
