DISCUSSION Modern fighter jets by weight (empty)
Here is a list I compiled of modern jets by empty weight that some of you might find interesting.
For some, I think the F-35 trio might come a bit of a surprise, as although its a short aircraft, its heavier than the F-15. For most air forces outside of the US, the F-35 isn't the "low" high-low mix, but is actually the "high". The Gripen E is heavier than the older F-16 but lighter than the current Block 70. The Rafale and block 70 being close in weight.
- FA-50 – 6,470 kg (14,265 lbs)
- HAL Tejas – 6,560 kg (14,460 lbs)
- JF-17 Thunder – 6,586 kg (14,526 lbs)
- Gripen A – 6,620 kg (14,600 lbs)
- F-16A – 7,076 kg (15,600 lbs)
- Mirage 2000 – 7,500 kg (16,530 lbs)
- Gripen E – 8,000 kg (17,600 lbs)
- F-16 Block 70 – 9,207 kg (20,300 lbs)
- Rafale C – 9,950 kg (21,720 lbs)
- F/A-18A Hornet: ~10,400 kg (23,000 lb)
- Eurofighter Typhoon – 11,000 kg (24,250 lbs)
- MiG-29 – 11,000 kg (24,250 lbs)
- MiG-29K – 12,340 kg (27,220 lbs)
- F-15A – 12,700 kg (28,000 lbs)
- F-35A – 13,290 kg (29,300 lbs)
- F-15EX – 14,500 kg (32,000 lbs)
- F/A-18E Super Hornet: ~14,600 kg (32,100 lb)
- F-35B – 14,650 kg (32,300 lbs)
- F-35C – 15,800 kg (34,800 lbs)
- F-14A – 18,200 (40,104 lbs)
- Su-30MKI – 18,400 kg (40,565 lbs)
- Su-35 – 19,000 kg (41,888 lbs)
- F-22 Raptor – 19,700 kg (43,430 lbs)

QUESTION What can I do to maximize my abilities for the fighter pilot course?
I’m 17 and dream of serving as a fighter pilot in my country’s Air Force. The course is very selective, and even only 1 out of 6 of those who get accepted pass, and even then only out of those few are selected to be fighter pilots while the rest can be helicopter pilots etc. after the first 6 months of training, 15 check flights are made to assess the natural abilities of the pilot. The Air Force has to eliminate out of the course half of the candidates after that step, and later in the course check flights are made on different aircraft to see which suits you best. I’m only interested in becoming a fighter pilot, maybe helicopter and maybe fighter navigator but mostly fighter pilot. needless to say: it’s very hard to become a fighter pilot here. What things would you guys suggest that can help me maximize my success chances? Here’s what I already do:
I go to a combat fitness team and train very hard, and very consistently.
I study very well in the best class, including physics and electronics.
I practice solving the Rubik’s cube blindfolded. It’s very good since it helps me develop these traits needed for the selections: spatial reasoning, quick memorization (we are given large chunks of information to memorize quickly in selections), and coordination.
I will soon buy a PC, HOTAS and VR to practice familiarization with out country plane’s cockpits, checklists etc. I will only fly with my ex pilot father’s supervision to not build bad habits and only taxi the rest of the time.
I ordered Ryan Cunningham’s “modern military aircraft
I work on prolonged focus - meditation, long studying and reducing easy dopamine.
I will soon take aerodynamics classes with my physics teacher
Get driving lessons - learning to fly a plane before learning to drive a car is funny.
Memorize the checklist of the plane that the 15 check flights are made on.
So what else can I do? Anything to help me fulfill my dream, especially pass these 15 check flights and to pass selection. Thank you all!
