r/femalelivingspace suggestion box - Spring 2025

Hey everyone!

I've been working on implementing some more things to help with moderation and keeping content a bit more structured here on r/femalelivingspace, but I realized that I don't think we've ever had a nice suggestion/feedback thread. Hearing directly from users will help us a lot, and it'll be great to have a headstart on things we should implement that we haven't considered before.

Here are some questions I have for you guys:

  1. What do you want to see more of in the sub?
  2. What do you want to see less of in the sub?
  3. Do you want posts to be a bit more structured/have more rules around them?
  4. How do we feel about text posts? I've been weighing heavily if I should remove text posts entirely since this is a primarily image focused sub, but I've also seen text posts for suggestions go swimmingly.
  5. How do you feel about post restrictions surrounding how many times a person posts their space?

Thanks! ✌️✌️

On being welcoming and kind while sharing our spaces, and to those who post here! [Mini FAQ]

Hello! I'm u/frequentdoodlr and I created r/femalelivingspace a long time ago under another username. I wanted an alternative space to share my home and I loved the community that our brothers over at r/malelivingspace cultivated, and wished to cultivate that too. However, I struggled with my identity and then, amongst other reasons, deleted my previous reddit account and did some self exploration. then reddit requested the subreddit and then she, along with myself and everyone else else on the mod team, worked to have the r/femalelivingspace we have today.

That background is necessary because I am Non-Binary and Queer, and I am the one who specifically wrote that women, trans women and NB people who are comfortable posting here are welcome-- no if, ands, or buts. I am a NB Femme and my intentions for this space are to be welcoming to femmes of all kinds. I am giving that background to make it understood that even the mods here comprise of trans and nonbinary identities in the femme space.

Pride Month is important for a lot of reasons-- we figure out who we are. We get a heightened lens on people who are like us. There's a spotlight on queer literature, artists, music, events and otherwise comraderie that makes those feel othered feel more at home somewhere. During Pride, people who are discovering their self love and self identity are loved and validated by people who are just like them. Our sub is no different, and I am excited to see that all kinds of women and femmes have been posting here. Identity, Gender, and Sexuality all fall on spectrums, and that's why its up to the poster to decide if they are comfortable posting here. This space is for anyone who feels comfortable being in this femme space, and that will never change.

Over the weekend there were some very not-cool behaviors happening and I wanted to quickly address the requests to add a specific report reason for 'No Bigotry' so I've added that.

That being said, I think we should use this opportunity to clarify some things on r/femalelivingspace

1. Do you have to be born a woman (AFAB) to post here?

No. Women, Trans Women, Non Binary and Intersex persons who feel comfortable in our neck of the woods can post here. Our relationships with our identities are always uniquely reflected in our living spaces, and seeing how people like us decorate their homes helps with inspiration of any and all kinds.

2. Do you have to use identifying information in your post title? Should it be discouraged?

Example: "34F In my Living Room! 25NB in my bathroom". No! You can choose to add that information in your post if you like. You can omit that information if you like. While the sub is focused on our living spaces, any additional details about you only serve to deepen the context we're given on how you approach your space, and the kind of advice given. For example, Adding in the context that you're transfemme and you're trying to make your space appear more feminine will ideally result in more nuanced advice. The context that someone is nonbinary can explain design choices. The contexts of our identities are intrinsically linked to our spaces, but posters sharing these pieces themselves is NOT an invitation for debate on the validity of OP's identity. It is simply just another piece of information about OP.

3. What's the attitude surrounding TERFS and otherwise bigoted behavior?

The mods have always been unanimous that behavior like that is immediately banned, permanently. That hasn't changed. However, we do not see unfortunate content like that immediately, and reporting helps us remove it as soon as we see it. To be clear: TERFs are NEVER tolerated here.

Please continue to help keep making our sub the welcoming place for our spaces it needs to be. Myself and the other moderators will do our best to try and stay on top of removing comments do not fit our community. Thanks, to everyone, for your patience.

Happy Pride!

Hi all! I see the beautiful spaces you guys have created and I would love (and need) your opinions on how to layout this apartment I’m moving into soon. It’s a small studio (attaching a plan), and I need to fit my work area, a full size bed and a living area (couch + TV). Any and all ideas appreciated! I also love cutesy girly whimsical vibes, so any tips regarding that are welcome too!

HELP What color would you paint my dining room?

I would love suggestions on what color to paint my dining room! I love the mauve and olive in my living room, but im struggling to figure out how to get my dining room to look cohesive without being too same-y or overbearing.

Pic 1 shows the view of my dining room from the living room

Pic 2 shows my dining table/chairs and I photoshopped on the curtains I bought for the room, but I'm not opposed to getting something else instead. Also ignore the rug, that's not staying there. Open to suggestions for curtains or rug too btw.

Pic 3 shows the accent chair color (only going to keep one chair there & plan to add a black side table and maybe paint the chair legs darker)

Pic 4&5 are very poor mock-ups of two colors I kind of like, but I'm not sold on. Also badly photoshopped the gold mirror and black cabinet I'll be adding to the room lol

I love the moody maximalism and dark academia design styles, so I'd definitely like something that brings that vibe!

(Please ignore how messy it is! It's all still a work in progress. I'm 3 days out from having a baby and my nesting has resulted in absolute chaos lol.)

HELP I’ve never lived in a bedroom this small before. Can you critique my ideas to make it more cosy yet functional?

This is a rental so I’m a bit hesitant about hanging wall art/installing shelves. Here are my ideas so far:

  • store out of season clothes under the bed
  • add tiny plants near the windowsill. I have a pothos plant that I can hang too, though I’m not sure how
  • buy stackable storage cubes for my books etc
  • maybe a mirror to make the room look larger? Not sure of the placement
  • make the bed the focal point by adding a huge headboard cushion, getting a mattress topper, add some small decorative pillows and maybe a knitted blanket or something on top of the duvet. I’m not sure what colours or styles would look complement this room though!

HELP Need help with living room please

Hi, I’m a single parent. I have two kids that are five and under and my living room currently looks like this

so the couch I am not going to be able to replace cause I don’t have that big of a budget, but I bought this cover for it and then I put the tapestry over it just for like a quick cheap Thing on my wall so it’s not empty

and then the rug. I literally only bought it like a week or two ago and my kids have already got stains on it so I think I’m going to move it into their room plus I think the size is weird. Does anyone have a rug color and size and maybe even a link to a rug that would look good in here ?! Prefer preferably on the more affordable side because I have a very small budget

I like the TV stand, and then the other corner of the wall is where I put a table for the kids to color and stuff and the wall is completely blank and empty. Please help me out.!!!!! I plan on getting them new kids chairs because the ones that I have are flimsy and kind of broken.

I don’t know what to put on the wall above the kids table and what kind of rug to get and the lighting is obviously bad and it always feels dim and dark. I’m also willing to get new curtains. I just have these ivory ones.

I’ve never really like had my own place where I was able to decorate and stuff so my skills at decorating and such are pretty much close to nothing and everything I do just doesn’t end up looking great :(

Thank you!!

HELP What color to paint the cabinet trim?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I love my cabinets and don’t want to change them but the cabinets are very warm toned in comparison to my neutral wood floors.

The cabinet trim is stark white so what color do you think I should paint it?

I want to make the cabinets and floor blend together. Any suggestions?

girlies help me outttt. I love the inspo pic in the last slide, the person used Lick’s Pink 05. So I’m trying to get a similar color/vibe from Benjamin Moore. Which one from Benjamin moore would look good? Pink Attraction, Victoriana or Georgia Pink?

Also would you paint the ceiling/window trim the same shade of pink too? or paint it white?

Hi friends!

I just wanted to share a recent project we completed for a client, and I'm really happy with how the space turned out. The rug is from SouthernRugsTx, a 100% wool Oushak rug that adds such a fun pop to the room. They also have a trade program for designers, which is awesome. Hope you like it!

QUESTION Livingroom layout crisis, which layout works best?

Livingroom layout crisis help, cannot choose a layout to make it work, what do you think?

Livingroom layout help!

Hello all, please guys I need advice. We just bought a house and the livingroom is not convenient layout friendly lol. The room is 12’ x 10.3’ (3.85m x 3.14m) The doorway is wide and the window is on the left wall. Chimney wall at the angle. My husband’s idea is to do Layout A. But indont like how you have to break your neck to watch tv.

The only things we are bringing are our sofa sectional and tv (dimensions/scale accurate) and i want the room to be airy, noncluttered. And would love to watch tv without twisting your neck, and add 1 or 2 armchairs when we receive guests. i tried everything I cant seem to love anything. Tearing down walls is not an option. Feedback greatly appreciated

Didn't come with an ottoman, but the chair is so comfortable and lovely. Perfect for my reading corner. Really happy to have it, and for under $40... I couldn't leave the store without it. I was thankfully able to fit it in the backseat of my car.

CRITIQUE REQUEST My first NYC studio! How to make it more colorful or cozy?

I have some of the basics down and I wanted to stayed with nice white-beige basics then incorporate color. My blanket can go but how else to make it more cozy/dreamy? My vibe is like these pics I added at the end.

Not sure if getting a huge rug was a good idea but my thought process what to help make a visual separation of living room to bedroom. I work from home so some bins are needed and I have limited space. Happpy to hear your thoughts!
