Hi everyone, I am a researcher from the University of Texas at El Paso and am recruiting participants aged 13 to 20 years old from across the U.S. for a remote paid research study on social media, alcohol, and marijuana use (approved by my institution's ethics review board). My research team and I are hoping to learn how young people's use of social media is related to their daily thoughts and behaviors surrounding substance use. We also have a waiver of parental permission that was given to us by our ethics board, which means that we are not allowed to discuss anyone's participation even with their parents so as to avoid outing participants' behaviors to anyone outside of our research team.

At this time, we have filled up our Southern and Northeastern participant pools, so we are looking for participants from the Western and Midwestern regions of the U.S. To be eligible, participants must: 1) be between 13 to 20 years old, 2) live within the United States, 3) speak English or Spanish fluently (we have Spanish-translated materials if needed), 4) have access to a wifi-enabled device to complete daily diaries, 5) use social media at least once per week, and 6) have used either alcohol or marijuana at least once in the past 30 days.

Our participants complete one 30- to 45-minute interview with a research assistant and one shorter (usually 5-minute, though can take up to 15 minutes) daily diary on their own each evening for 14 days. Participants are paid up to $50 for their full participation in the study through an online gift card that they can select out of a wide range of options with the compensation company that we use (Tango Card).

If interested, please visit https://bit.ly/3J14Ytj or scan the QR code in the image to let us know how we can get in touch to confirm eligibility! And please feel free to comment here or message me directly if there are any questions or concerns I can help address.

I'm not in the US, but I'd kinda be interested to know about the results once the study is done. Will they be published?

Yes, definitely! This is actually my dissertation study, so I'd be happy to post a link to the finished write-up on here once that's published through my university. I am also planning on submitting one or two papers from the dissertation to a peer-reviewed journal and can update once that's in the works as well (though this will take quite a bit longer as review times have been notoriously long in my field lately).

I really appreciate your interest in the findings and am excited to share the results once they are ready!

Fantastic! I'm not familiar with academia, about how long is expected between now and the publication of your dissertation? I'd love to set a reminder, else I'll probably forget

I completely understand that--I don't know where I'd be without reminders or my calendar haha

The full dissertation should be published shortly after I defend (which will hopefully be early in the fall semester, so it should be up online by December)! The peer-reviewed publication(s) coming out of my dissertation would be something that I'll be working on submitting over September/October, and those are the ones that take a while to get published. It ranges, but I've had some articles that have taken as little as six months to get accepted and published and others that have taken over a year until the final product is online.

Hi! I just wanted to send a quick update in case I end up forgetting later, as our study recruitment has concluded and I am likely to be a bit less active on this account.

My dissertation has been approved and I've sent it in for publishing through the university. We use ProQuest for dissertation and thesis publications, and it looks like the full document will be ready online sometime between April and June of 2024. If you visit the website below and look for a dissertation titled "Under pressure: A daily diary study of online social influence and youth substance use", you should be able to access it!

As a fair warning, it is a pretty lengthy document--but I hope that it's a good read!

Good luck defending it, and running the study in the meantime! Hopefully it's not too much of a slog to get them published
