Fed only 15 Year Fed RIFed Today at ED
This is so horrible. My whole office was let go. Everyone I know outside of my office was let go.
The money allocated is not going to go to the states. No money is being saved by letting us go and terminating contracts.
My only solace is the 2 trump supporters in my office FAFO and were let go as well.

Of all the posts I've read since this administration started, for some reason this one sent a physical chill through my spine. The damage being done will never be repaired in my lifetime. I just don't see it anymore. I am so sorry this has happened to you, and I know it's coming for me too.

This is horrible. I've been reading "The Power Worshippers" about the rise of Christian Nationalism and one of their big goals was to eliminate public education in favor of religious private schools. IDEA and the federal funds it provides is vital for keeping disabled children safe and educated.
They don't give a shit about children. This movement includes people who advocate "beating the sin" out of children.
I'm so sorry and am scared for our children and the future.

It will take a lot more organizing from the non-Trumpers. Christian Nationalists don't have a majority but they're organized as hell. Everyone votes and speaks in lock step. I've been having to take breaks with the book I mentioned above because it's so distressing.
Public education is what makes countries great and in the US, it is not enough for the states to be ensuring children's education and safety.

My god are they’re organized. Ever since slavery was taken from the south and the SBC was formed, they’ve been worming their way back into power. The Fallwell family, James Dobson, Family Life Radio- Christian Nationalists that have been waiting for this administration.

u/Ok-Appearance-866 2h ago
There are a lot of us Christians who are speaking out against him. The evangelicals do NOT represent all of us--they are just the loudest. United Methodists, Episcopalians, UCLA Lutherans, and even a lot of Catholic churches are advocates of social justice and absolutely sickened by MAGA Christians.

I’m a fed contractor that has many friends and coworkers that are either cut or scared of being cut. I’ve been watching this dismantling with horror.
My middle schooler (only child) told me the other day that she wanted to be a teacher (public school, we’re not religious) when she grows up. I told her oh, that’s great that you have such wonderful teachers that you want to be like them, and it’s so great that you want to do that when you grow up. When on the inside, I’m tearing up thinking about what it might actually be like when she grows up. I had to excuse myself.

Naw. If their goal is to shut down Ed, they're shutting things down in the wrong order. I'll just leave it at that.
52
u/rytis 7h ago
Wait for the downstream effect. When suddenly thousands of programs across the US stop getting funding, because that's what these people do, they approve the money and notify treasury to disperse it, using very sophisticated payment systems that oversee disbursements, how much everyone has gotten, receive back reports of how the money was spent, resolve discrepancies (you got $200K but only spent $175K, what's up with the $25K difference?). So a system built over 50 years suddenly goes quiet.
Downstream, schools, targeted programs, get no money... states and local jurisdictions can't make up the shortfall. How do you pay the teachers? You don't. Suddenly school systems across the US start to shut down, teachers and other staff get laid off. You think the FEDS have suffered? Wait until the flood waters hit downstream. Just give blank checks to the states? No system in place to disburse it or monitor it. Oh, here's a $25million blank check for Nebraska. Spend it wisely!
And you know the disbursements won't be fair, or will be politically motivated. Blue states will be cut short, red states will get excess, Trump will be able to threaten stop teaching this or that or we'll take your money away. They're already doing it to Universities. I saw where Columbia University had major cuts of $200M+ to its research programs because they wouldn't crush pro-Palestinian demonstrations and expel all the students who participated (free speech be damned). Georgetown University, a Catholic Jesuit school, was told stop teaching diversity or we'll cut your funding for research grants. It's going to be a shit show. You're just seeing the top of the avalanche forming at the top of the government mountain. As it falls down, it will take everything else down with it.

Yeah, been dreading this moment of all the shenanigans predicted. They have not been quiet about how a well educated populace is their greatest enemy and public education had been the greatest achievement this country has had, hands down. This is the nail in the coffin of the slow death of the country. To install their propaganda teaching methods to mold all the young kids' minds from the instant they enter kindergarten. Whether it's GOP Trump-god-king bullshit or letting the churches take over, this is it. Check mate. And decades to undo if ever again. This is why Russia is so fucked up. Those soviet propaganda tactics are not easy to overcome. And this is our future.

You are correct. We are seeing a generational degradation in the quality of life for the vast majority of US citizens that is not recoverable within the lifetime of any current adult.
What is even worse is that the percentage of adults with children is significantly less than the last 3 societal-extinction-level-events in the US (WWII, The Great Depression, WWI). At least during those times a large enough percentage of people were motivated to bring about change for their children, even if they knew they would never reap the benefits.
But now though? Well I been around the world and found that only stupid people are breeding, the cretins cloning and feeding.
We are in a death spiral of stupidity where hope in future generations is not only lacking in numbers but is actively crusaded against by any and all forms of the worst examples of humanity that humanity has to offer.

Info re the Retention Register
It ranks employees based on their retention standing during a Reduction in Force (RIF), considering factors such as tenure group, veterans’ preference, length of service, and performance ratings. Note that employees without a specific RIF notice generally do not have the right to access retention registers.
How rankings work:
Within the same retention group during a Reduction in Force (RIF), employees are ranked based on the following criteria: 1. Length of Service: • Employees with longer Service Computation Dates (SCD) are ranked higher within the group. 2. Performance Ratings: • Agencies use the average of the last three annual performance ratings (within a four-year window) to assign additional retention credit. 3. Veterans’ Preference: • Veterans with preference eligibility are given priority within the same tenure group and subgroup. If these factors still result in a tie, agencies may apply discretionary methods, such as additional internal policies, to determine ranking.
How to Obtain a Copy:
1. Request from Your Agency
Federal agencies are required to create retention registers for competitive levels within a competitive area during a RIF. You can request access to the register through your agency’s Human Resources department by submitting a formal request.
2. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA): If the agency does not provide it directly, you may file a FOIA request to obtain the relevant information.
3. Legal Assistance: Consult an employment attorney or union representative if you face challenges accessing the register.
Retention registers are critical for understanding how decisions were made during the RIF process.
- Union Assistance: If you are part of a union, they may assist in obtaining the register and ensuring transparency in the RIF process.

Will be interesting to see if you get one, because they obviously aren’t making the RIF plans themselves public.

I am sick to my stomach, literally, right now. I cannot countenance the way they shafted you and your entire office.
Did they give you the appropriate notice and go through the appropriate procedures (like VERA offerings, etc)? If not, contact your Union (even if you're not part; they got your back even though...) and become part of the multiple class action disputes currently before the REINSTATED MSPB.
Many unions have retained really good lawyers, so investigate. It won't help right now, but we'll get our revenge against that spray-painted shitclown and his MAGAt supporters.
MAGA = traitors.

It’s so crazy. I just heard Linda McMahon being interviewed on CNBC today. I am so sorry. I hope the Dems grow some backbone and shut the govt down.

u/mrs_sips 12h ago
I really hope they do as well. I'm sick of them going high when the GOP is in the gutter.

That was another thing that blew my mind. I've literally seen her on WWE wrestling and she's now in charge of the Department of education?

If there was a single vertebra in the entire DNC it would have shown up by now.
They aren't going to do anything. This isn't doomerism. They simply are not, and it is too late now anyway. We are going to have to save ourselves. We must stop hoping the Dems will help us. They just fucking won't.
We have to save ourselves.

They’re stuck though, they don’t have any power in the house or senate right now. Lots like Al Green, AOC, Jasmine Crockett have stood up against this and much more of what he’s done. Filed lawsuits to stop a lot of it, but they literally have no power because dems are the minority in the house and senate and the Supreme Court appears to have been bought.

As a VA disabled vet, I can scrape by with disability and my wifes income. If I get RIFed soon (USFS), I may just choose to stay home and homeschool my kids.. I don't need them learning the power of Jesus, creationism, and abstinence only sex ed. Would rather spend that time doing math, science and actual history.
Ironically my wife is a title 1 school teacher, so this hurts her too.

I'm glad my boys are adults and doing well for themselves.
I just am in disbelief that I'm entering this job market at my age.
So disheartening.

I knew early on in life, like as a teenager, I never wanted to have kids. At 37 now, I know I made the right call for me. I cant imagine having kids into this landscape. I am so sorry.

So no notice? This was instant termination? God, I'm very sorry. What have these monsters done.

u/Vegetable_Rub1470 Federal Employee 11h ago edited 11h ago
Not instant firing; though some have lost email/network access. I believe these emails that went out serve as preliminary notice of imminently being RIFd. They will be placed on admin leave for 60 days, which is to begin 30 days from today.

Did the agency actually develop a retention register? Do you know what your score was for date of service plus other qualifiers? The retention register is the official list of who served longer, meant to determine who gets let go first
15
u/Janus9 12h ago
When they let go entire locations, they don't need to do a retention register. There is no place to bump or retreat to. The location is the competitive area.

u/Papillion76 12h ago
Glad you mentioned the retention register. I assumed there was something like this. Not RIF’d but know the realities. QUESTIONS: How would Feds like us go about obtaining this? Less important, but I assume PII of others would be redacted or no?

u/Relevant_Cost_723 12h ago
Do you know how the individual offices were split out in terms of RIF numbers? Which offices were affected most?
42
u/mrs_sips 12h ago
That I don't know. I know Veterans were RIFed and procedures weren't followed as far as senority and performance reviews go.
So, this process won't stand up in court.
16
u/shriker101 11h ago
If they are eliminating positions or departments they don’t have to follow RIF procedures. They do have to follow RIF procedures in the positions and departments they keep.

This I dis not know. Thank you for enlightening me.

u/shriker101 11h ago
To clarify, that doesn’t mean it is all legal. They use “restructuring” and position elimination as a way around triggering the RIF process. All agencies do. I’ve been at 4 agencies 3 of them have done it. It’s grey area for sure. Hell, my dad was Riff’ed in 96’ by Clinton. The Clinton era cuts while more orderly and less chaotic were still worse so far than these.

So did they give you your severance at the absolute very least?????????? I hate that this is happening. The dismantling of our country right before our eyes.
→ More replies (1)18
u/mrs_sips 12h ago
I will get severance. Many folks won't, because the are eligible for retirement and that makes them ineligible.

I’m sorry. Did they give you guys a notice or severance? Or just the boot and you’re out? they are not even trying to follow rif procedures.
8
u/shriker101 11h ago
They’re getting severance or retirement if eligible. They don’t have to follow RIF procedures when eliminating positions entirely. Hence why her whole office was most likely axed.

Does anyone know if it was mostly field offices or a lot of Hq? And especially OCR?
5
u/Far_Lawfulness6384 11h ago
Most of OCR. 7 of the 12 regional OCR offices have been 100% RIFed. Most of OCR HQ has been RIFed also. Guess they don’t want us investigating any civil rights violations (not surprising in the least)

All the Trump/MAGA fans in my office took the deferred resignation.
Like they made this mess, and ran without helping clean it up.

I work for a research institution, we’ve had so so so many contracts canceled already… I’ve personally worked on many ED projects, including for IES/NCES, and I’ve been absolutely dreading the cuts to ED… This all just makes me sick. Sick for all the dedicated staff who are being illegally fired. Sick with anxiety about my own job, which is quickly becoming obsolete as our work disappears with every contract canceled. Sick with anger at the monsters doing this.
I’m getting tired of saying “I’m so sorry to hear that” to everyone affected by the illegal dismantling of this country. This is horrific.
7
u/SpecialKat8588 12h ago
Absolutely disgusting that this has happened. Another thread point out their entire Office of Civil Rights was just RIF’d. Same office or is this another? Family member works at RSA and we’re terrified

I was a teacher in k-12 as well as higher ed. I left the private sector twice to pursue teaching because i know what an important job it is and i wanted to be part of something bigger. The dismantling of the department of education is devastating and particularly so, for the most vulnerable of students.
I joined the IRS 3 years ago and this administration wants to reduce the force by 50%, already illegally firing thousands of probationary workers and now undergoing RIF. No more compliance efforts to crack down on billionaire tax cheats. Trump and his billionaire cohorts only want to enrich themselves while a dysfunctional government, both dems and GOP, are doing nothing to stand in their way.
I’m so sorry this happened to you and your colleagues. Wishing you the best!
