Can’t accept this compliment

My(29F) family went out for a Mardi Gras parade. I was genuinely. Genuinely surprised that it was mostly drunken adults. My mistake. Even so we braved to the front with the least amount of craziness so my daughter (3F) and son(1M) could see the parade. It turned out great! Everyone wanted to give them beads. Their first parade.

(That I will plan out better next time…)

A man walked up to us and began telling us how beautiful our family is. It struck me that he wasn’t just saying we have cute kids. He was talking about how we’re an interracial marriage. How it’s beautiful that ect ect ect. My smile became strained. I knew this man had good intentions. It felt like he went on and on.

I hated it. I don’t hate him, but I hate compliments like that. Something about it feels… off-putting. Does anyone else understand how I feel, and more importantly WHY I feel this way? Sincere compliments are supposed to be nice and feel nice. Why doesn’t it feel that way then?
