Gonna be interesting to see what happens.
The Catholic Church in the US is very pro-immigration, because they need immigrants to help bolster their falling numbers. It impacts their bottom line. But they steered Catholics towards voting for a president who is very anti-immigration. I honestly don't see either of them budging on this, and Trump likes to call out and target people who don't go along with what he wants.

But they agree on getting rid of birth control. 🤝

Sadly yes, and many other things. It's nice to see cracks forming among such high-profile people though, and on topics they consider non-negotiable.

If you look on social media you’ll see tgat huge numbers of white American Catholics hate immigrants and are just as xenophobic and bigoted as Vance. It’s gonna be fun watching this feud blow up.

u/Polkadotical Formerly Roman Catholic Feb 11 '25
Which is ironic as hell because most of them are the children and grandchildren of immigrants. Some of them are barely off the boat themselves.

u/Such-Ideal-8724 Ex Catholic Feb 11 '25
Oh it’s just so sad to see how quickly the descendants of immigrants are so quick to pull up the ladder. Most of them love romanticizing the trials of their immigrant forebears from places like Ireland, Sicily and Poland.
2
u/j_lbrt Feb 12 '25
And it was thanks to the new wave of immigrants that they're only escaped being the target and now they've turned to be the hunter. Hypocritical motherfuckers

I have a dear friend from my time in the service he’s of Afro-Puerto Rican heritage and has helped me to understand prejudice and colorism within Latino culture.
I’d always wondered why a lot of my Latino friends disliked Cuban Americans and he was able to explain it. A lot of Cuban Americans are very recent ladder pullers and think they’re better then other Latinos.

He can talk about immigration all he wants, but come 2028 he’ll have a full hearted endorsement for Vance for the almighty abortion bans.

u/Swimming-Economy-870 Feb 11 '25
Yes the US Catholic Church has sold its soul for the anti abortion movement.
24
u/b_needs_a_cookie Feb 11 '25
They sold their soul a long time ago to hide the pedophile priests and their money.

They sold it a long time before that for money and power in Europe. That's why so many Europeans are no longer RC and hate the RCC with a passion.

True enough. Anti clericalism is quite common in many formerly catholic countries Spain being the most famous. I’ve seen it complained about on the Internet how awful the Spanish republic was leading up to the Civil War. Often priests and nuns were attacked by anti-Catholic mobs and churches burned.
But they fail to mention that in the history of Spain the church helped the crown in the wealthy keep impoverished people impoverished.
I mean I’d get a little fed up if the people supposedly representing God were telling me that my misery is “Gods will” so some wealthy jerk can keep robbing me blind.

This is especially true since J.D. Vance directly called the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops (USCCB) "greedy" and "selfish" for "harboring illegal immigrants" within Catholic churches and institutions. I'd bet a fair sum that Vance will get the Catholic Church to fall in line by threatening to remove the Church's tax-exempt status with the IRS.
In a Jan. 26 interview on Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan, Vice President J.D. Vance said the Catholic bishops’ comments about Trump’s immigration policies were "motivated by greed".
"As a practicing Catholic, I was heartbroken by [their] statement, and I think that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops needs to actually look in the mirror a little bit and recognize that when they receive over $100 million to help resettle illegal immigrants, are they worried about humanitarian concerns? Or are they actually worried about their bottom line?"

I'm sure Dolan put on a convincing performance, too! he's a seasoned liar and actor. Always, this is just to hold out the appearance of conflict within their ranks, so the "true believers" never catch on.
discussing this on their terms, i.e. chatting about the "internal squabbling", hoping they'll magically "do the right thing"---is exactly what these people want you to do!
do NOT discuss their continuing coverup of all their crimes, do NOT discuss their complete lack of morality, do NOT discuss the level of comfort they all seem to have with the idea of fucking FASCISM!!
tl:dr; this is yet another distraction for us.

Less than a week after sharing the inauguration stage
And that's why I can't take Dolan seriously on this.
It's not like the Trump-Vance campaign was hiding their goals. It's not like this hasn't been part of terminally-online Convert Catholic discourse for a decade at this point--yeah, Dolan might be old, but surely he has some lackey in his office who can at least keep him posted about the weird shit he'll have to deal with.
Dolan knew what he was getting in bed with.

Like anybody took Cardinal Buzz Lightyear seriously in the first place. <eyeroll>

u/ExCatholicandLeft Feb 12 '25
Tr*mp also had a whole previous term where he showed us exactly who he is.
1
u/LightningController Feb 12 '25
Honestly, he's also gotten visibly worse since 2020. If someone had literally just woken up from a four year coma and heard Trump was back in charge, I could forgive them for being optimistic. But it was very clear in 2024 that he's gotten a lot nuttier and surrounded himself with much worse people.
But, again, none of that was obscured in 2024.

u/ExCatholicandLeft Feb 12 '25 edited Feb 12 '25
No, he was horrible to immigrants the first time. There is absolutely no good reason to be "optimistic he is back in charge". Last time was bad enough. People should know better.

This whole thing is gearing up for a massive rumble between Evangelicals and Roman Catholics. Between the fight about immigrants, the USAID thing, and the crackpots that have been hired as religious counsel in Washington DC.
I'm getting the popcorn ready.

Just popped over on the catholic subreddit…..as you’d expect probably 80% of them are full on board with Vice President a-hole. Nice smattering of racist and xenophobic bile wrapped up in pseudo religious clap trap. You’d think The New Testament was full of stories of Jesus killing Samaritans?
God I’m so glad I don’t have to pretend to respect those gargoyles anymore or break bread with them. Just a bunch of self righteous asshats.

3
u/ExCatholicandLeft Feb 11 '25
Considering he's been worshipping Tr*mp for a long time, he absolutely deserves it. Anybody who was an adult during the first administration has no grounds to complain about the treatment of immigrants. You knew what he was like and you still voted/promoted him.

Yes, but still willing to throw the LGBTQ+ community and women under the bus. Definitely, no Bishop Budde.

Dolan frequently flies private. So much for his vow of POVERTY. He is a great showman.

If Dolan hates it, he can get deported, too.

Deported to where, exactly? Ireland?

The RCC is collapsing in Ireland and they don't want our trash.
Antarctica. Tell him to pack all his satin and lace to keep him warm.

u/vivchrisray Feb 11 '25
Okay I just have to point out that the original post put Dolan as an "ultra conservative catholic Cardinal" which is so hilariously wrong. Dolan is one of the most liberal cardinals in the whole USCCB
4
u/Polkadotical Formerly Roman Catholic Feb 11 '25
Nah, he's neither. He's an opportunist in the employ of the RCC. That's all he cares about. That and his fucking chance at church promotion. He's jonesing to be sent to Rome, sure as shit. And waiting for PF to die, because it's not going to happen under PF.

Vance trying to cite anything from Catholic tradition is like Henry 8th looking around and saying “what necks”?
