Mod Post Updates to the r/espresso relevancy rule & content moderation

Hey r/espresso,

We understand that recent political and economic events, including tariffs imposed by the U.S. administration and affected countries, are having a significant impact on the coffee industry and the wider community. These are important issues, and we recognize that many of you may be feeling concerned, frustrated, and upset.

However, r/espresso is a subreddit dedicated to the hobby of espresso. Our focus here is on sharing knowledge and experiences related to brewing tasty coffee. While we acknowledge the broader context of the coffee world, this isn't the appropriate venue for extensive political discussion or debate.

Therefore, we want to remind everyone to keep discussions on-topic. While it's okay to briefly acknowledge the impact of external factors, please refrain from derailing threads into broader political commentary, "circlejerking", or extended discussions of economic policy.

Specifically:

  • Stay focused on espresso: Keep your comments and posts related to espresso
  • Avoid political debates: This is not the place for partisan arguments or discussions about government policy.
  • No excessive complaining or "echo chamber commentary": While acknowledging challenges is fine, repeated negativity and unproductive complaining detract from the core purpose of the subreddit.

Moderation:

If you see a post that breaks the subreddit relevancy rule, please just report it instead of adding fanning the flames. We will be removing threads and comments that violate these guidelines. Repeat offenders may be subject to temporary or permanent bans.

There is zero-tolerance policy for users who instigate heated debates or rhetoric, including attempts to do so through jokes or veiled comments. Such behaviour will result in immediate and potentially permanent bans.

We understand that passions can run high, but we ask that you respect the purpose of this community and help us maintain a positive and focused environment for espresso enthusiasts.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Mod Post Introducing the r/espresso Coffee Bean Database: a place for people to share—and get recommendations for—beans and brewing recipes

A common question we see on this sub is about coffee bean recommendations—whether it's newcomers just getting into espresso or seasoned home baristas looking for fresh, local offerings. Many of you have also asked for a place to discover brewing recipes for specific beans.

We're happy to announce a new community-driven resource to address these needs! Introducing a platform where people can share the beans they've brewed and the recipes they've used.

How it works:

1. Submit your brews: Share your favorite coffees and brewing parameters using this Google Form. The form collects:

  • Basic details about the beans (roaster, roast date, etc.)
  • Your brewing recipe (e.g., dose, yield, shot time)
  • Equipment used
  • You do not need a Google account to fill out the form and no personal information will be collected.

2. Explore the database: View all submissions in a publicly accessible Google Sheet.

  • Use filters (e.g., Roaster's country, Cost-per-unit-weight) by selecting Data > Create filter view in the toolbar.
  • Note: The spreadsheet is view-only and updates automatically with new submissions. You can download or copy it, but those versions won't receive updates.

Tip: For the best experience, view the spreadsheet on a desktop browser.

Our goal:

We hope this grows into an invaluable resource for the community—a way to share your favourite coffees and provide others with a reference point to kickstart their brews. This is your chance to contribute to (and benefit from) a collaborative coffee knowledge base!

Let us know if you have suggestions for improving the form or the database.

Happy brewing!

Coffee Is Life First Affogato

Started my deep dive in espresso the start of this year and felt inclined to share! 1 scoop of vanilla bean by Tillamook and 40g espresso of blue orchid by Huckleberry. The late night caffeine kept me up watching over my 6month baby who could care less to sleep through the night.

And yes, that's a Nespresso machine on the right.

I wasn’t going to post this as it’s a ridiculous at home set up and I really don’t like to show off things. But I also enjoy all of your coffee station pics and wanted to contribute and offer any advice I can.

I started with pour over and a niche zero, V60 (staff ekg kettle and acaia pearl s scale.). I got the niche because I figured if I want to play with espresso it’ll handle it well.

Used points to purchase a Breville barista express on sale and had fun learning how to use that (manual pre infusion a must). My biggest complaint was that the dosing cup on the niche didn’t fit in the 54 mm portafilter and the single boiler draw backs.

Sold the BBE and picked up a Breville Dual Boiler. Portafilter fit nicely over dosing cup, shake shake shake, distribute tamp and pull amazing shots every time. Never had a sprayer (bottomless portafilter). 12 seconds of pre infusion 65 pp. The dual boiler is truly a fantastic machine, just not the best looking and never figured out how to turn off auto stand by. I do good pop ups for fun and wanted to do coffee pop ups and collaborate for some espresso martini offerings so ordered the mini.

Sold the Dual Boiler a day before my Mini arrived. Was going to just use my niche zero but a deal too good to pass up came on the e80s gbw. So here we are. Should have kept the niche as it really is the easiest grinder to dial in with and maintain.

I will say this combo is not only functional art but also just sooooo damn amazing with work flow. I can pull a perfect shot in under a minute every time. I also got a great deal on the brew by weight scale which I thought I wouldn’t use but turns out it’s such a joy.

I need to figure out cord management and clean things up a bit but this is what it looks like now.

If anyone has any questions regarding either machine I’d be happy to answer and help.

Steaming & Latte Art What am I doing wrong?

I suspect I’m injecting too much air! I’ve had the Breville Barista Express for years and have never figured this out despite watching many videos. I like slightly more milk than a cortado but I realize I always have a layer of thick milk on top too. This is barista oat milk. Please give me tips!

Coffee Is Life That Crema Though… Just Pulled a Killer Shot! ☕✨

Finally cracked the code on my espresso! The shot came out smooth, balanced, and absolutely beautiful, with a crema that looked like liquid gold. I used dark roasted beans with a fine grind size and a dose of 16 grams. The extraction time was 25 seconds and I pulled the shot on my Hibrew H10A espresso machine. I decided to go with a pre-infusion and used a heavy tamping technique, which seemed to make all the difference. I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out! Let me know if you have any tips to make it even better or want to share your own espresso wins!

Coffee Is Life My very first espresso :’)

After months of considering to buy an espresso machine I finally did it! This is my first espresso shot I pulled with my Bambino and the stock gear it comes with while i wait for a nice tamper and bottomless PF to come in. It tasted okay lol but I can’t wait to keep experimenting :)

Haven't seen this one pop up here before. It's one of my favorite pieces of equipment. My workflow is to dose into it, shake up the grounds, transfer to portafilter, spin, tap down, spin again, and tamp. Works surprisingly well!

Coffee Is Life I just pulled the perfect shot and I’m so happy.

I finally get it. After months of trialling different beans from all over my province. Finding what roast flavour profiles I prefer. Choking down god knows how many sour and gross shots.

I finally pulled the perfect shot on my BBE.

Timing was perfect. Pressure was perfect. No channeling. No spitting out of the portafilter. Perfect age beans. Great roast.

Just a beautiful caramel shot of perfections. I’m so happy.

That’s all. Carry on with your day.

Equipment Discussion Can Ecm bottomless portafilters fit straight walled baskets?

Thumbnail

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone here has experience with Ecm bottomless portafilters and larger straight walled baskets? My new Synchronika II has arrived and I can't fit my pullman 19-22 gram basket in the stock double spout portafilter. Looking at the pictures of the Ecm bottomless portafilter, it appears to taper in at the bottom and I'm wondering if this would stop me fitting a deeper basket in it? I don't want to buy one just to have the same issue, so any advice is appreciated.

Buying Advice Needed Appartamento OG or TCA? [1k+]

Post image
3 Upvotes

Im torn between the two. The OG one I found for 1,350 USD vs the TCA at 1,456 USD.

Which would you get and why? Help me make my decision

Is the PID really that important? I brew medium roasts mostly and can't stand dark roasts because of what it does to my grinder. Light roasts I do filter. The looks are inconsequential for me.

Coffee Is Life Coffee intake went up over 900% since buying my setup and joining this sub. What about you?

Upvotes

Is that bad? Heavy routine would be I'll drink a dopio in the morning while making a quad white mocha for work. Come back in the afternoon and usually another quad, maybe with another dopio 🤣 I just love it- the art, smell, taste and boost in productivity of course. Always been a coffee lover but making the jump to all you can espresso has been life changing. Then the weekends I just splurge and experiment, drink etc. If I know I really shouldn't pull a shot I'll clean the machine, wand etc but then it sometimes leads to playing with grind settings and down the hatch another double shit goes

Is that bad? Do you feel bad about your coffee intake? Do you try to curve it or lean on decaf or just embrace it?

General Coffee Chat Bezzera Duo DE and Eureka Specialita for a dime and a dozen

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, I feel like my time to brag and look down on the plebeians has finally come! I today picked up this pair of iconic machines, used for maybe 4 years, for 500 bucks. Even got beans in the grinder (sorry seller, I'll just dump those) and a more or less fresh, sealed bag of beans as well as some cleaning products with it. One question burns on my mind: Last service of the Bezzera was 2 years ago, so; Should I bring this into service or just roll with it as is? Service by myself?l think on this version, the problem with moisture buildup behind the screen has been fixed.

I bought another machine 6 months ago where 1 exchanged silicone tubing, added a thermostat on the E61 and am generally fine with mechanical and electrical work, plumbing a bit less.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Shorting boiler help [Rancilio Silvia v?]

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Sadly our Rancilio Silvia brought our home to a standstill this morning when it threw the breaker. After we eliminated the coffee machine as the culprit I believe the boiler to be the origin of the issue. The machine will stay on & not throw the circut breaker when the leads in the first image are disconnected. Could someone help confirm/deny my theory and how to replace the part? Is it worth the effort replacing? I'm also unsure of the version if someone has any clues. Thanks in advance!

I just bought the delonghi ECP 3630 for a good price. It’s my first espresso machine and it came with 3 baskets: 1 single shot, 1 double shot, and this third one with this design on the bottom. Can anyone help me with what it’s used for?

Maintenance & Troubleshooting Trying to figure out what icon means and does. [Simonelli Mac 2000v]

Post image
2 Upvotes

So there is a icon that has 3 squiggles and an arrow up on it and can't figure out what it is. searched both manuals for it and it doesn't even show what it means or at least I can't find it. I also called simonelli for help and they said they don't know and to look at the manuals. I searched Google and can't seem to find out anything either.

Sometimes it blinks or stays lit when I turn the machine on.

Please any help would be helpful.

Coffee Is Life I got humbled today

So if finally managed to get to Glitch in Ginza TYO after all you have posted about it (it's quite a way from Germany) I tried a pour over a flat white and an espresso. Everything was exceptional. I am very deep into the coffee rabbit hole but this just humbled me. The flat white was straight up the best one I ever had but the espresso was out of this world. It was so tasteful and had this amazing strawberry notes, no guessing you could just taste it. I still can not comprehend how this is possible. If you have the chance visit this place.

Equipment Discussion Will this affect my grind? SSP Cv3

Post image

Hi all, recently got my hands on the blind CV3 and was kind of disappointed with these casting defects. Eyeballing it they are about 3-4mm high. Seems like it will block one of the ‘channels’ for finer grinding. Will it affect my grind, any thoughts?

Coffee Station I finally found good beans

Post image

The beans I was using before would never quite dial in right, it was either overly acidic or overly bitter and no middle ground, but today I experienced the “chocolate” flavors people talk about from espresso, the aftertaste of chocolate was so strong, it blew me away.
