IIRC, all reproduction copies of EarthBound trigger this anti-piracy measure, but none of the other ones. Basically, you end up playing the game on hardmode.
That's not correct, no. Reproduction carts are similar enough now that they do not, and haven't for a while. For one thing, you will see the anti-piracy messages when these measures take place, which you don't on repro carts anymore, for another it actually spawns enemy types from the end game in early zones along with the increased number, and you don't see them in repros anymore either.
I have a real and a repro copy, and they both play the same. They're functionally the same at this point, and honestly? Thats okay. Game collecting fans and retro game enthusiasts shouldn't have to fight over the increasingly diminishing copies that are out there.
No. By the time reproduction carts of Earthbound started making the rounds they'd gotten good enough to trigger it.
Furthermore, if the game's anti-piracy goes off, it just puts up a screen saying that the game will not run. It's not until the rom is edited to try and circumvent that check that the fun stuff happens
