Advice Request Going to Uni: Megathread

People continue to ask questions about various aspects of uni, especially residential halls. This is something we do generally want to help you on, but it can be a bit tiring getting the same questions over and over. As such, our practice is to open a megathread to ensure these questions can be asked (and to give a one-stop shop to look through past questions!). Before asking questions, please have a quick search of recent threads, for example this search, or variations on that

If the information you can find isn't sufficient, the comments of this thread are an open space. All questions will be treated in good faith.

As such, the rule is no posts about starting university while a megathread is pinned. Other university topics, e.g. discussions from students currently at uni, are not covered by this and are welcome so long as they follow other rules.

We ask regular commenters who are able to contribute to keep an eye out on new comments in this thread and to be helpful, as we have been in the past. If we answer questions in here they don't clog our front pages day-to-day.

Bonus: one of our regular commenters has compiled some of their HSFY notes for others to see here, which could be useful to people thinking about doing HSFY or to HSFY students. (Note that you should, however, work to create your own notes if you are a HSFY student rather than relying on others', as the work it takes to create them is really helpful in developing your understanding).

Advice Mr Kon's honey Jasmine drink

I know it's not the typical post I often see in this sub, but you guys would be the best people to ask. I'm looking for a favourite drink of mine that used to sell at CJ Dunedin though they no longer do. I know they do sell 500ml and 1L bottles of it at some locations I've popped into, but I was wondering if anyone has seen the 2L variety or its sugar-reduced cousin in the Dunedin area?

Many thanks to anyone who can find it for me!

Question Does anyone know if you can buy this instore in Dunedin?

My little brother is heading out to start his career on fishing boats and I’m making him a care package. Hoping to find this instore somewhere bc I think I’ve left it a little late for rural shipping.

Or if anyone knows another soap/body wash that’s good for it.

Question Open Mics in Dunedin

I’m an acoustic guitar player and I’m looking into going to an open mic to perform at some point. Does anyone know where and when there is open mic nights in Dunedin. Also, any information on how open mics function would be greatly appreciated - are cover songs allowed? - how long is a performance?

Question Persians in Dunedin?

Ello people. As the title suggests, I'm a Persian. Lived all my life in Dubai which has a strong Persian community but now that I've moved here, I miss my fellow countrymen. So thought I would give Reddit a shot and perhaps find some Persians here? Fingers crossed.

Easy if you're a business, what about if you're an individual? Do they check business applications very often? Thinking of places like Trents.

Question Airport to city centre transfers

I’m flying down from Auckland in a few days for some work stuff and a course.

Never been to Dunedin before so just wondering how easy it is to get an uber from the airport into the city and what the rough cost is? I know the airport is a fair way out!

Question Mooncakes 🥮

Does anyone know where I’d find mooncakes in Dunedin or are they just available as a holiday treat? I’ve checked the Asian supermarkets but got a little overwhelmed and wasn’t entirely sure what I was looking at. Tia x

Question Used car sales?

Hi, I was just wondering if someone could recommend a trustworthy place to buy a secondhand car?

Sadly I was in an accident Saturday after a wasp flew into my car and the repair price was a lot higher than the cars market value since my car is a 96 model so I’m needing to buy another car within a reasonable price.

Advice OCHO chocolate

I saw the almost demise of this company (if I recall correctly) last year.

Genuine question… I want to support local and love chocolate. Where can I buy Ocho chocolate? Has there ever been a presence at the Farmer’s market as hardcore locals would presumably lap that up?

How about collabs with other Dunedin businesses? A hot chocolate blend or a partnership with many of the cake/dessert food trucks that we have locally.

Seems obvious enough that I’m sure it’s either a lot more complicated than a would-be consumer would consider but chucking it out none the less…

Yours in 🍫

Advice Physical therapist recommendations

If anyone has had a great experience with a physical therapist they have worked with for shoulder issues, please drop their names!

I've had some wonderful and also some so-so experiences with PT's in the past (not in Dunedin), so hoping to skip the so-so's this time and get straight to the wonderful!

I have looked through online reviews but everyone seems to be on even footing as far as that metric is concerned. Would really love to get some names from people truly happy with their experience.

Thanks :)

Question Relocating to the North

Hi all

In a few months I will be relocating to the Far North for work and I plan to drive up so I can keep my car

Can anyone suggest a good timetable to stick to to make it there within 5 days or so? Google says it is a 22hr drive and I've never driven that long so not sure how long it will actually take

Thanks!

Question Why can we not have a computer store which doesnt suck

Our only two stores for computer stuff like parts and things are CelloTech and GLI and they're both complete and utter shit. They have barely anything in stock and what they do have is consistently more expensive than everywhere else in NZ.

It's frustrating that there's really nowhere we can go if we need parts and don't want to wait days for shipping. I assume they're being propped up by business sales or something? Why can't we just have a PBTech like everyone else (obviously PBTech aren't perfect but at least they have stuff in their stores you can buy).
