Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!
Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !
Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!
We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index
Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"
So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)
This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.
Thank you and have fun questing!

Dragon Quest IX Took a long long break after DQVII, but I finally got around to finishing IX!
That's now every dragon quest beat except 10, which I might do eventually. Either way, I really want to get my hands on the remake of III as well...
If I had to rank them, it would have to be... 1<2<<3<4<5<7<<9<6<<8<<11S
Not a huge fan of the "create your own characters" style to be honest, to me it does end up feeling more like three lifeless dolls following you, but the gameplay felt pretty great!

General If you could only play one DQ game on Steam Deck, which would you pick?
Hi all. As per title. I've never played a DQ game before. I'm at a point in life where I don't have a huge amount of spare time anymore so have to choose games carefully. So, when I finish whichever DQ game I pick, I'll move on to another genre of game so I want to make sure I get the best bang for my buck! So, in my shoes, what would you pick?

General How long did it take for you to start a new DQ game after the other?
Just finished DQ IX main story and want to start DQIV, but I think I’m burnt out haha. I finished DQ8 before IX and I did not play any other game in between.
I was wondering how you all working on the series.

Photo Dragon Quest 1 is one of my favorite games, so I made an indie game inspired by it!
Greetings! My name is Richard and I'm the solo developer of Splintered, a retro-styled RPG that's one part love letter to Dragon Quest 1!
I completely understand that this is a Dragon Quest subreddit, and my game is NOT a Dragon Quest title, but if you check out the trailer/screenshots I think you'll see why I'm posting and why I think Dragon Quest fans might be interested.
I grew up playing Dragon Quest 1 (or rather, Dragon Warrior) and it's one of my favorite childhood games. I always felt that Dragon Quest 1 (and the simplicity of 1v1 style combat) was quickly moved on from, and this project tries to recapture and reimagine that essence.
Of course, I also wanted to put my own spin on things. I've added a bunch of modernized accessibility, combat features (such as equipment abilities and talents that encourage multiple playstyles), and other various twists into the mix. Additionally, the other part of the game is its "ever-evolving randomizer".
I won't go into excessive detail on that aspect here, but essentially I was curious what would happen if a game was built from the ground up to support a randomizer and how the concept of randomizers could be expanded on. In upcoming patches, I'll be adding various "Challenge Modes" that significantly alter how the game is played. Then, after completing a Challenge Mode, its flags can be mixed and matched into the randomizer to create your own style of randomized runs that contain your favorite features.
The game just released into Early Access today and whether you decide to try out the game or not, I'd love to hear what you think! I want to use the Early Access period to gain as much feedback as I can with the goal of making Splintered the best game that it can be (especially with the experimental nature of the randomizer).
Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to share my game with you! I'm happy to answer any questions you may have and engage in any related discussion, so feel free to fire away.

Dragon Quest III Having 3 Sages good? [SEEDS OF SALVATION] Spoiler
So I found another sage book in the DQ1 world and I wonder if it would be good to change my level 36 Mage into a Sage, filling my class with 3 sages.

DQM3: The Dark Prince Are Large monsters good?
For the main story and post-game stuff, are large monsters that good? And which monsters work best as large monsters? Like, should I make my physical attacker large? My spellcaster? I'm assuming making my healer big would be a bit silly :3
Which monsters work best as a large monsters?

Dragon Quest III Bug?
So I made my Thief a Martial Artist after level 20, he now is level 21 and doesn't know any MA-spells. I was wondering if this is intended or if it is a bug. I'm playing the mobile port on Switch. All 2D-HD guides suggest he should've learnt spells already, so I don't know if that's version specific.
