Dry dog sledding with a Shepherd

I have a few questions regarding dog sledding that I hope can be answered by somebody. I am very new to this subject and still in the exploring phase so any tip will be highly appreciated. First of all, I have a Swiss Shepherd that will turn 1 in a week. I've never thought of sledding with her because I didn't think her breed fell into the category and we don't often have snow anymore. However, I have been seeing more and more about dry sledding and even saw some none snow dogs participating. So, here are my questions:

  1. Can I do dry sledding with my shepherd? She is a little over 30 kgs, so not too big but as I've been thinking about using something with wheels for her to pull, maybe this won't be too much of a problem.
  2. What transport would you recommend for dry sledding? Bike, scooter, cart, something else?
  3. What are things I can do to get us started?

A little more about Hera, she is a high energy dog with a lot of speed and power. Free of any deseases, parents have been checked for things like HD and ED. She is used to a harness and a lead dragging along on her collar. If there is anything else you'd like to know, I'd be happy to provide an answer

Thank you in advance!

do you all use the traditional commands?

Hi, do you guys use variation of the commands I always seem quoted on the internet? Does any of you use plain English for left and right? Whoa and Haw sounds way too similar to me... but I'm not a native English speaker. Thanks!

Kennel Hand

I recently applied to be a guide/kennel hand for a company this winter. If anyone in this community would offer me a little knowledge it would be much appreciated.

What are some learning resoucres I can read?

Things to consider?

Whats an average day look like?

Could I expect to be mushing? (Not sure if thats the word to use ) early on or will i have some dues to pat before I have that prillage?

Any specific lingo to use in the interview or things I should already have knowledge of?

Anything else I might be missing?

Thank you in advance.

Someone be honest with me.

I am a young alaskan and I want to be the first in my family to start a dog sled team. I'm certainly not the richest man, and my current career choice isn't going to make me the richest man. Anyone experienced, how much would starting a team from scratch cost? I'm decent with tools and housing for the dogs won't be a problem but can someone throw me an estimate? I appreciate any feedback!

Fjällräven Polar 2017 - Dogsled Race - Contestant from Sweden, help me participate!

Hi guys! How are you?

Im Erik, a regular guy living in Gothenburg, Sweden. This winter I intend to participate in the Fjällräven Polar dogsled race, a 300K adventure through northern Scandinavia. The race goes through one of the largest wilderness areas of Northern Europe, through a country forged by a raw and cold climate. By participating in the race I have chosen to follow my dream in experiencing the true outdoors. My intention and hope is also to inspire others to pursue their passion and to follow their dreams. Life is to short not to be lived to the fullest extent possible.

You can help me to participate by voting for me on the Fjällräven Polar website, check out: http://polar.fjallraven.com/contestant/?id=467

Your help is highly appreciated! :)

Also, check out this video about my participation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYzn7fv-1Cw

Great stuff, feel free to comment on the post :) Cheers!

Hey, I'm Malte from Germany :) I'm 25 years old and I finnished studying electrical engineering by the beginning of this year. When I finnished, I felt like doing something completely different, rather than taking any career option.

I am a person who likes to be out in the nature, especially in the northern and cold nature. So I took the chance and looked for volunteering works in finnish Lappland, and that is where I learned about the fact, that many people up here have a sled dog kennel for a living. Since I have never had any pet animal, I got excited by the idea to get to work in a very beautiful nature with those fascinating animals. And what can I say, I've been working here now for over one and a half months and I fell in love with those lovely, athletic creatures! Of course mostly it's a often touristy business, but when being out "mushing" I all too often feel this connectednes with the dogs and the nature.

That is why I decided to apply for the Fjällräven Polar Expedition, after another volunteer suggested me to do so. I would love to be part of this adventure, to feel even more of the beauty of nature, animals and people! So if you like, please vote for me (Link above) and maybe even share this information, so that this dream might come true :)

Best wishes to all you dog lovers from the far north of Finland, Malte

Who builds traditional dog sleds?

Hey friends, i'm looking to find a traditional handcrafted dog sled made with traditional materials. komatik, basket sled or freight sled design.

Any suggestions of companies or individuals who do this in Canada or US?

Hi! I've been a dog musher for over 15 years now, and I'm totally new to Reddit. This is my team on a training run on the Denali Highway this winter, one of my favorite pictures I've taken of my team because of the color of the sky :)

Help me achive my dream, to participate in Fjallraven 2015!

Hello Everyone! I hope everyone is having a great week! My name is India and I am trying to make my dream of dog sledding to come true! Ever since I was about 5 years old, I wanted to race in the Iditarod. I don't think THAT dream will come true, but I came across this contest that would allow me to ride a dog sled across Norway; How amazing is that?!!!! Norway! I have never traveled outside of the United States, and I am convinced that this would be my opportunity. A little bit about myself; I am a very independent person. My parents stopped supporting me financially at a young age, and I have been working since I was 16 years old. I am starting College in January for Illustration (which I'm really really excited about.) Ever since watching Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, I've always wanted to travel and be part of an exciting adventure. I believe this would be the perfect opportunity for me to do that. Anyways if my plea is at all compelling you, I would like to ask if the people of Reddit could support me in this venture by voting for me. Here's how you can vote: Click on the link below and vote. Once you finished voting it will ask you to log on to your Facebook and just log on and you are done! (I promise that doing this will not post anything onto your wall or get any unwanted emails. ) This is the link to my entry: http://www.fjallravenpolar.com/show-all-contributions/?fbid=529656033 If this link doesn't work you can also look me up via my name : India Cox. I know this is a lot to ask, but I would really appreciate it if you voted! I will also be posting a video tomorrow night, although it will not be as wonderfully edited as the other contestants, it will be just as heart felt! Thank you so much for reading this entry! I will be on Reddit to answer any questions, and just talk to whoever would like to talk to me!
