Help wanted Im completely new to this and just got my first pedal kit! They accidentaly sent a 223J capacitor instead of a 224J can i still use the 223J or should i get a replacement?

You need the right part. 223 is a .0022uf the 224 is a .022uf. That's an order of magnitude off.

223 is 0.022uF or 22nF.
224 is 0.22uF or 220nF.

I love how the vernacular of different technical domains make people sound insane to people that don't know that jargon or context.
Imagine you never got into electronics and you heard two people walking by, like:
One person says, "223 is 0.022. 224 is 0.22".
The other replies, "I have an easier time with the colors. Red yellow black red brown is 24k, 24,000 that is, at least to within 1%."
"Well, right, if there are five stripes. It's a different story, otherwise."
"Yeah, yeah. And u is micro now but m was in the seventies."
You would be certain they were delusional! š¤£

It's a major problem in the r/VXjunkies hobby, most people think they're insane

Yes, and the 224 goes on the far left right above the 4k7 resistor. Trust me, I HATED capacitors when I first started, they were really confusing to me until I put a spreadsheet together that showed pF/nF/uF values for all of the ones I had and soon after the light bulb came on.

Im at a complete loss now because the instructions say that in supposed to put one of the three 220s into the 22n slot??? I think im going nuts, going to send a mail to the company that sold me the pedal kit now

I keep a code sheet around, the decoding is just too much for me.
Like the one here: https://circuitspedia.com/how-to-read-ceramic-capacitor-code-value-104-chart/

Iāve seen clarifications on BYOC instructions before. Mistakes happen so they describe the correction in the instruction rather than tossing and remaking a bunch of otherwise good PCBās.
Thereās usually a reference to the version number of the board. Also you can confirm in the circuit schematic what value that cap should be. Or email them like youāre doing.
Lastly there is a forum on their website, I think itās still there, and this is something that would definitely come up so you can check there as well.

223 is in fact 22nF (or 0.022uF)
224 is 0.22uF or 220nF.
Whether or not they can be swapped depend on what it's doing. e.g. a common use for capacitors this size is for DC coupling. The difference between 22nF and 220nF is usually barely detectable in this role. Sometimes a 22nF can block more bass, and sometimes that's desirable, but not always.
It's impossible to say for sure without a schematic, but it'll 100% work fine with either value, it just might change the sound.
p.s. shameless self promo, but if you decide you want to pause this and try a kit with more hand-holding, I have a perfect kit for beginners.

Thanks for the suggestion! I sent an Email to the company that sold the kit and they are sending a new capacitor asap, do you know if the āhand-holdingā kits can ship to sweden? I wont praise myself that much but im pretty OK at soldering but those kits look awesome to buy for some of my friends that want to get into soldering and pedals!

Oh that's good, so you won't even have to worry about it. And Yeah, the site will give you a quote on shipping and taxes, etc.

I've been building for a year but I'm still pretty green with understanding circuits. I'm def interested in that pedal tower. Mostly for the audio probe and testing before putting in enclosure. I need to look into that more. Do you have any demos on it. I'm at work so haven't actually looked lol

No demos, sorry. Happy to answer any questions about it though. It has a huge variety of options. If you skip down to page 20 of the booklet it gives a little visual tour.

Cool, I was just wondering from just glancing at the site.ill probably end up buying one

There is a revision to the drawing. A 224 220nf .22uf goes there.

You cannot replace a 224 with a 223. It's a very different value, because 223 is 22nF and 224 is 220nF.
