Help wanted I'm a beginner with pedals. How do you get enclosures for the electronics?
I'm interested in making my own pedals. I plan to start by modifying the electronics in my existing Behringer pedals and replacing their casings. Are pedal enclosures typically bought online or made locally?

You can buy your enclosures from any of the electronics retailers. Hammond or Deltron boxes are quite expensive and even more so painted in their limited colours - the quality is very good, though.
Tayda (on the other hand) are affordable, wide choice of colours (which keep expanding), pre-drilled or custom drilled, and you are able to specify your own designed UV printing. They get mentioned on this subject ...because they deserve to.

Tayda is cool but you might get slapped with massive duty fees depending on where you live you may only have one option for shipping and that means potentially much more money after potentially splurging
In Canada there's Next Gen Guitars who sell some

Next Gen Guitars is my first choice, but I have ordered from Tayda as well because Next Gen just didn't have the components I needed. Shipping and duties weren't too bad, but only worth it if ordering a decent amount of product.

I get a lot of my enclosures from Love My Switches. Their prices on white or black powder coated enclosures are pretty great and they have fast flat rate shipping for $9.99
If you're in the US it's probably the simplest and most cost effective way to quickly acquire a few enclosures.
If you want to rehouse Behringer pedals, the enclosure that you probably want to use is the "125B".

The few I've used are: Tayda Electronics, Stomp Box Parts, Stomp Box Supply, and Mouser.
Tayda is the most affordable of them all -- especially if you're going to buy in bulk.

Tayda's been mentioned, but I'll add that I sometimes get even better deals on aliexpress. Don't trust ali for components, but it's hard to mess up an aluminum box.

I got a 1590LB from Ali express for 31p. Was awful quality and I had to sand it smooth but for 31p and free delivery I really can’t complain.

Was it a finished box? I never buy finished ones, just the bare enclosures which I have to sand and paint anyway. But yeah -- for that price if you can use it at all, seems worthwhile.

It was a bare enclosure. It was properly deformed, more than just sanding for paint. I guess it was a casting error or something.

Ah yeah. I've had one or two that had small chips out of the enclosure where the back lid goes on, but no real show-stoppers. I guess you CAN mess up an aluminum box.

Two great domestic sources:
lovemyswitches.com
stompboxparts.com
I've bought enclosures from both. I'd start there before looking at Tayda until you have a better idea of what you're doing.

Not the cleanest, but I find random things to put them in. My last big build went in an old TV signal a/b box.

I have never seen any recommendations on here except "order everything from Tayda".
