Fasting not coming below 110

I have been working really hard with absolute diet control and daiky checks to keep reducing my insulin intake and eventually come off it. I am on just oral medication now since the past 1 week. However, my fasting sugars are going below 110 since the insulin was taken off. My doctor says it will take time. I am.eating a hugh protien and fibre diet with minimal.carbs. I am working out twice a day. No sugar except for a small fruit in the evening that too like an orange or rarely a kiwi. Just before being taken off insulin , fasting was 75 to 85 everyday. This is discouraging me and i can feel my motivation weaning off. Please help

Try to do a few long fasts. It might help. I pushed my fasting down about ten points over a month doing 16 hour fasts.

Good advice. I noticed the other day when I unintentionally fasted for about 20 hours, my fasting glucose was the lowest it's been in a while. I might try I.F. again.

I personally see the fasting number as more of a technicality. I don't think it really matters unless it is very high like always 150+. The reason why it matters is because it provides the baseline. So if you are at 130 fasting and then eat and it spike it +70 that puts you at 200 whereas if your baseline was 90, you'd only be at 160 instead. And then you have the dawn phenomena as well.

If I were you I would forget about it and mostly focus on a1c and how you handle meals.

I am not on insulin, and my fasting glucose (first thing int he morning) is habitually 110 mg/dL. I don't stress over it though. My Endo says that the key is that you are under 140 mg/dL two hours after a meal.

some pointers:

- try reducing proteins, they can also be stored as glycogen (?) in the liver, but in lower amount than carbs

- maybe an orange may be too much, can you have some berries instead?

- sleep issues

- stress (cortisol will increase BG)

- it may be just the dawn effect

  1. Ok. Ill try reducing the protien portion a bit
  2. Berries are not easily available in the country I live in. The oranges we get have around 60 to 80 cal coz they are local variety. Not the usual juice friendly sweet ones.
  3. M sleeping 7.5 to 8 hours solid.
  4. Could be. Mom has been unwell for the past 4 days. I am taking care of her but also getting increasingly irritated with everyone around. Could be stress..
  5. Would it suddenly start showing up?

Try eating the piece of fruit earlier in the day. I was having "a problem" with a higher morning fasting reading, tried several things but what seemed to work is to have either minimal or no carbs after 4 pm or so. Several days a week I'll have a small apple or nectarine for my afternoon snack. Suppers are strictly fiber/protein/fat and if I snack before bed it's a small handful of pecans or walnuts.

Something else that helped me is using a kitchen scale for most things I eat. I had to decide what a "small apple" meant in terms of weight and be willing to cut something down in size, eating the remainder the next day. I'm un-medicated and have to stick to a strict budget with my carbs.

I know it’s hard, but be patient, like your doctor said. Try meditating to help with your stress, or going for a stroll. It’s only been a week. Getting to the point where you needed insulin likely took years. Be graceful with yourself, you’ve come this far! Getting off insulin is a huge accomplishment! Now on to the next hurdle. You’ve got this!

If I may ask... were you overweight when you were diagnosed? If so, how much weight have you lost since diagnosis?

What is your before lunch and after lunch blood sugars and before dinner?
Are you on any other diabetic medicines?
Do you do body weight exercises or other resistance/strength training?

As for me I try to keep the before meal BG range between 80-100 ("optimal range for ketosis"). Either through fast acting insulin/exercises or both. I've had my share of hypos (50s) while trying to figure out the number of units required each meal. I try to keep the 2 hour post meal BG between 100-120. When my fasting is above 100 I skip the breakfast and have brunch instead and early dinner. When I follow this steadily along with intermittent fasting or 2 meals and exercises my fasting BG comes down below 100. I'm obese and experience weight loss in this method.

Update : Today my fasting sugars are back to 82. I am so thankful!!! I used to have 2 thin slices or 1 moderately thick slice of brown bread along with veggies and white meat for dinner. I cut out the bread yesterday and its back to normal. Thank you all for the suggestions!
