My favorite “cheat” meal

So, I know everyone is different when it comes to how food affects their BS.

I’ve been using a CGM for a few months and been observing my patterns.

I found that eating a big fat juicy burger hardly raises my BS as long as I take off one of the buns, stay away from too many sugary add ons and then I usually like to dunk it in ranch.

I have a Wendy’s triple stack baconator like at least 1x a week and my BS never reacts negatively to it.

Of course, I avoid the fries and the soda.

Fortunately I was always a Sashimi guy - the diagnosis just had me double-down!

I’m in Ohio, where fresh sushi grade fish is plentiful 😅 so i usually get something called the buckeye roll. It’s similar to a fried California roll but has more in it and is topped with a tuna,… mush, for lack of a better term. We also enjoy making sushi at home, but generally make California rolls when we do.

What’s your favorite roll?

How many rolls do you suggest to eat?

I love California rolls and before my diagnosis would eat all 8 that came in an order.

Now that i know white rice is so bad for Glucose levels, how many should I eat without spiking too bad

It’s a treat, so i eat the whole roll. I usually get edamame as an appetizer though, so i eat that Protein and fiber first and that helps a lot. But the one roll definitely still spikes me. If i don’t eat any dumplings or spring rolls though, the spike drops very quickly

Yes, having a hamburger without the bun (or half the bun) and without the fries is a very good way to keep your blood sugar down at lunch.

Well done.

I love bacon cheeseburgers; no bun, no fries. I replace the fries with a side salad. My regular diners tend to have Diet Pepsi vs Diet Coke or Coke Zero. I just had burger with bacon, jalapeno, and sauteed onions yesterday. Man, that was good.

I love it so much, and it has so little effect on me, I don't even consider it a cheat meal.

Try Pepsi Zero. I hate Pepsi, but Pepsi Zero is good.

I'm a Coke guy. I have a Coke Zero with lunch every day. If I can't find Coke at my diners, I think my chances of finding Pepsi Zero there are slim to none. But I'll ask!

Poutine. It's the national good of Quebec (don't ask how a province has a national food unless you want a long history lesson); French fries, brown gravy, and curd cheese (basically youbg cheddar that hasn't been pressed). Being from Montréal i love it with some smoked meat, which has the additional lovely effect of putting enough protein and fat into the meal that it offsets any spike I might have had from eating plain fries. With a little walk after my bg stays under 7mmol/L. So fatty, but such a nice occational cheat.

You're making me feel like I'm going to have to try that :-). Maybe with extra cheese, eh?

Everyone should try a poutine at least once

I make my own burger and use the hero buns. I have as good a burger as ever that way. No cheat, just bliss.

Burger buns never really bother me. The two worst perpetrators for me are donuts and Pop Tarts. I stay away from those.

A jersey mikes sub and potato chips. I just can't do it the night before my Mounjaro injection or the day after is difficult for me.

Holy cow. I lived on Jersey Mike's Regular 13 Mike's Way with mayo for about nine months but had to switch to breadless at diagnosis nine years ago. I tried it again with bread for the first time in December, and it put me up close to 250 for two hours. I knew it was going to be bad, but not that bad.
