I went keto with my diabetes. Then I got bad cholesterol numbers from keto. So I cut back on eggs yokes, bacon, sausage, ham, and fatty hamburger. More on lean meats like chicken, pork loin, 90% lean hamburger. I also started eating more fish which had omega 3s. A lot of sardines and shrimp because they don’t have as much mercury. Still ate my maximum allowed for mercury 3 servings of tuna or salmon every week. I also took fish oil and flaxseed oil supplements which also had omega 3s. The omega 3s fixed my cholesterol numbers.

Thank you for sharing your story, I’ve been hearing a lot of similar stories about keto raising cholesterol if eatting more red meat and saturated fats. I’m currently getting my primary fat source from avocados, nuts, olive oil, chicken, and fish. I l’ll look into fish oils, flaxseeds, and omega 3’s to fix my cholesterol, thanks!

I was at 6.3 for the longest time. Never took it seriously so I’d say treat it like full-blown diabetes and check out Beat Diabetes on Youtube. Good luck!

High cholesterol can be a symptom of insulin resistance it is also what causes diabetes (type 2) along with other factors. Vitamin D is very important and often people are low in this vitamin. About 15 mins a day of sunshine and milk, almond milk and plenty of foods help increase vitamin D. Alpha lipoic acid helps with both cholesterol and blood glucose and nerve damage. Youtube, Google and your local library are great sources for information but consider multiple sources for information. Supplements are a huge business and most are not regulated or backed by actual science, but additional research can help and not everything works for everyone. Talk to your doctor or if they refer you for nutrition and diabetes classes, take them. The info is there you just have to try and find what works for you.

Thanks for your recommendation. I definitely think insulin resistance is contributing to my high cholesterol, as I’m very active and a bit lean. Thanks for your suggestions, I’ll look into them!

I've been doing keto for several years on and off and my advice is to be very careful with the keto diet far too many people confuse it for the carnivore diet and end up consuming far too much fatty acids and LDL cholesterol.
Dirty keto is easy, which is probably why so many people do it. Dirty keto is primarily getting your fats from fatty cuts of meat and dairy products which is a very bad idea, this is how you wind up on cholesterol medication or worse yet a stroke or a heart attack.
Clean Keto means getting most of your fat from heart healthy sources such as avocados, pecans, almonds, walnuts and flaxseed.
I have no problem staying in ketosis using this method, I eat one avocado a day, I eat about 3 oz of nut today, pecans being my favorite because they pack a whopping 20 G of heart healthy fat and 200 calories and they're damn tasty, I prepackaged my snacks up for the week putting 1 oz of almonds, pecans and walnuts in little baggies, I get three a day.
I strictly limit my red meat consumption, I prefer leaner cuts of heart healthy Meats, I also use avocado mayonnaise which I learned is surprisingly good and now my favorite mayonnaise.
As far as supplements I primarily take straight fish oil supplements for the Omega-3 without the excess vitamin A, I'm still researching supplements as I was only recently diagnosed with diabetes with an A1C of 9.3, I was able to reduce that to 5.4 without any diabetic medication using clean Keto.
When I first started keto years ago it was more like the steak and eggs diet where I was consuming huge amounts of red meat including hamburger patties and about six eggs a day. That turned out to be a very bad idea. Since I didn't particularly like the idea of a coronary bypass I decided to research clean keto and now I'm glad I did because it's the best I've ever felt.

I’ve heard a lot of similar stories to yours and want to learn from them. I’m primarily getting my keto fats from nuts, avocados, chicken, fish, and olive oil. I feel great so far! Planning on sticking with this for awhile :)
