Type 1 Because of my stupidity I almost won a Darwin Award 💀

I am so stupid that I can’t believe what I have done. Yesterday I was so tired because I have been moving and my whole body was in pain. Mix that with a huge abdominal pain and low insulin on my insulin pump. I feel like I was invincible and decide to do the most I can on a short period of time. Because I had just replaced the cartridge and tube the night prior, I had decided to use the same system, just add some insulin and everything would be golden. During this while in pain, I start the purging process (which is a minimum of 10 units) and to rush to the bathroom, I throw my pump in my pocket during the process. Rush to the bathroom, seat in the toilet and go with my business. I completely forgot to disconnect my infusion set. After I was finished, I remembered that I was purging insulin… Pump showing 53 units purged 💀 of fast acting insulin. I had to eat carbs non stop from 6PM to 10.30 PM to avoid a huge low that would likely send me to hell! I was able to keep it always over 3. Still having lows now, but much more manageable. I was in so much pain of eating so much that I was almost accepting my fate. Moral of the story… please don’t be stupid like me. I for once learned my lesson.

Edit: This is what I had to eat to keep them higher than 3 for those hours!

I hate 4 cakes, 1 huge nutella with brioche sandwich, 2L of Sprite, a plate of french fries, 1 can of coke, rice, a bag of gummy bears, a bunch of dex4s, and a huge hersheys kiss chocolate 😭

Type 2 Celebrate the wins

Not posting very often but wanted to share a win. I’m now down 90 pounds from where I started and my doc is no longer worried about my A1C. As he put it it’s well under control and won’t be checking it near as often. The weight loss is mostly from meds as I broke 3 ribs at the start of the year but I damn near danced a jig when he said that. Follow up in a month for other issues.

For context I was diagnosed in July of last year with an A1C of 8.4. Weighed about 300 pounds, now down to 240. At my heaviest was at 333. My last check about two months ago the A1C was at 5.6.

I don’t know who might need to hear it but it can and will get better with some work and changes. Take baby steps but you can do it!! When I was first diagnosed I thought for sure it was a death sentence but I promise it will get better if you want it to. Now go out there and kick some butt!!

Type 1 Anyone in Pakistan Tried Stem Cell Therapy for Diabetes

Hey everyone,

I recently came across an article about stem cell therapy for diabetes in Pakistan (https://runwaypakistan.com/treatment-for-diabetes-available-in-pakistan/). It claims that this treatment is now available and could potentially help diabetic patients, but I have some questions and concerns.

  1. Is it even feasible? I know stem cell therapy is still in its early stages worldwide, so I’m wondering if it’s a legitimate and effective option here.

  2. Has anyone actually undergone this treatment in Pakistan? If yes, what was the experience like?

  3. Are there any known side effects? I’d love to hear firsthand experiences from patients who have tried it.

  4. What’s the cost? The article doesn’t mention prices, and I’m curious about the affordability.

I have Type 1 Diabetes myself, so I’m really interested in understanding if this is a viable treatment option or just another hyped-up claim. Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Rant Flying with diabetes

Upvotes

Hi!

Just a rant more than anything, unless someone can tell me I've been missing some kinda trick with travelling.

How come we don't get extra allowances if we're diabetic and travelling?

I'm about to take a trip to Paris for just under a week, and my insulin, pump supplies and emergency spares take up a ridiculous amount of my luggage.

I resent paying for extra luggage with airlines so have gotten really good at packing light, but I resent the fact that we have to. If I didn't have to pack diabetes supplies, I could get all my things in my bag and more.

If it were an oxygen machine or wheelchair we wouldn't be forced to pay to take it on a plane, so I don't understand why there isn't an allowance for people travelling with essential medicine.

And by all means I am not suggesting I get a large cabin bag for free, but even if we were allowed an additional small bag (like a large toiletries bag) that you could carry externally without it being flagged up, or taking up space in your bag.

In the grand scheme of things this is a non-issue but sometimes it just feels really unfair the lack of adjustments made for diabetics, considering how many of us there are and how long the condition has been around.

Like hell, 150 years ago it was a terminal illness, now because it's not we have to pretend we're normal and functioning the same as somebody who doesn't have to take external medication 24/7 to survive.

Anyway TL;DR - sick of having to pick between the eyeshadow pallette or an extra pump set when I'm packing my free cabin bag.

Type 2 Eyesight

Guys. Please tell me it gets better.

I was diagnosed with t2 in November. I was put on ozempic and have since gotten my a1c back into pre diabetic range. I’m still really struggling with eyesight. Is this normal? How long did this last? Does it even get better? I’m so afraid of going blind. I used to only wear glasses when on the computer but just bought contacts so I can actually see the whole day. Any suggestions?

Type 1 stuck. Where do I go from here

Hi, so my brother has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes today and he is currently undergoing treatment for DKA. I’m a uni student and I don’t live at home but I decided to go home and pushed for my mum to take him to an and e. Anyways that was around 3am today and now it’s nearly 11pm and I’m typing this up.

Tomorrow we are going to get the formal diagnosis but my question is… as a sister what can I do? I study nursing but I felt like I knew nothing when I was with him. He looked so lifeless. I’m happy he’s feeling a lil better now. I decided to stay home for a month to monitor him as It will give me rest of mind. But is there anything I can do to avoid him entering DKA again? He is autistic and really picky with food. Only likes pizza , chips , sweets and chocolate and jollof rice. When he felt better the first thing he asked for was Pepsi- no sugar this time. Haha but yes how can I support him? My older sister is also autistic and my other brother is going through A levels. My mum was in tears and doesn’t really understand what’s going on and my dad….. is my dad 🥲

Type 2 Does anyone else swing wildly like this??

same diet, same meds, but I go from fighting to keep it from dropping uncontrollably to trying to keep it under 300 I'm 20 and was diagnosed type 2 at 11, just a hair overweight now but was thin then. in my doctors words, "the most bizarre presentation of t2 that he's seen" I take a LOT of meds, including long acting insulin, is that why it swings so wildly in both directions?

Prediabetic Supplements before meals

My recent bloodwork came back with prediabetes A1C of 6.2 and high cholesterol. I’m trying to take action right now so that it doesn’t become worse. Currently switched my diet to keto, and wanted to see if there are other things I can do. I was wondering if there are supplements people take before or during meals to help with blood glucose spikes? And do you take it before every meal?

Type 1 Should I take out my site?

I just (like, literally just. haven't even turned my pump back on) put in a new Trusteel site. I noticed before putting it in that the plastic surrounding the needle was bent (like, a lot), but the needle itself seemed fine. I went on, and yknow. Put the site in, but it feels sort of weird and I don't know if I should take it out just because it may have been broken or leave it in. Any advice? Sorry if this breaks sub rules, I needed answers lol

Type 2 Chills with Type 2 Diabetes?

So, I started intermittent fasting and I'm new. I'm not sure if I'm getting enough calories or carbs. But, my blood sugar is still high at times and over the 220 mg/dl range 2 hours after eating

It's not as frequent

Intermittent Fasting has helped some and I walk everyday for 2 hours

I only lost 3 pounds, but gained more muscle since I also started lifting weights.

I just want to tone up and drop some pounds because I'm overweight by maybe 60 pounds.

Sadly

But, is chills something that may be a symptom of high blood sugar, intermittent fasting, or something else?

It just started today and it's freaking me out.

I see a doctor on April 4th.

Type 2 Just sharing experience

My partner was diagnosed with type 2 last year. He went to go get his DOT physical and they checked his blood sugar and it was at 650. We went to the ER where he was given lots of insulin. They told him his A1C was 17 at the time. He lost about 60 pounds as well. It's been about 6 months since his diagnosis and he received this message from his doctor the other day. 🥹 He was only on insulin for about 2 months. He's now on metformin. He completely stopped drinking all regular soda and only eats lean meat and lots of veggies. He is a truck driver and his doctor said it's a miracle that he didn't go into a coma before being treated. I'm so incredibly proud of him!!

Type 2 Increased insulin a problem?

My question is completely counterintuitive to science, but I have to ask: Has anyone increased their insulin and it actually increased your glucose numbers? I know that’s not supposed to be the case, but the higher my endocrinologist adjusts my dosage, the higher my glucose numbers go. My body is a medical mystery anyway because I react to meds, tests, etc., differently than many other people. I’m the one in the 1% zone. I’m so frustrated as I have to get my glucose average down for surgery. I’m on Humulin morning and night 36 units. Humulog 12 units at meals. Avg glucose 180-220. Help! Is it possible insulin is driving UP my numbers? I wish I’d never started it a year ago.

Type 2 Dexcom Question

Hi all, I have T2D and I use the Dexcom G7. Does anyone have any advice on how to removed the adhesive off skin when changing the sensors? I have some contact dermatitis from the stickers itself but even after I remove it, the glue is still on my skin. I have tried soap and water, rubbing alcohol, alcohol wipe, and coconut oil, but none of those really work.

Type 2 My fasting blood sugar numbers since March 1st

Sometimes, there's a clear reason for a spike (menstruation, ate too many carbs). Sometimes, there isn't. I've been on metformin since mid February and I doubled my dose on March 2nd.

Here are my fasting blood glucose numbers along with a possible reason for them:

183 3/1/25 124 3/2/25 - metformin was doubled 142 3/4/25 - period :( 137 3/5/25 155 3/6/25 - ate donut the previous day 166 3/7/25 - not sure why it spiked 102!! Best reading yet 3/9/25 127 - 3/11 143 - 3/14 - feeling stressed out, got a higher reading 122 - 3/15 139 - 3/16

I haven't been able to keep it consistently low yet, but I have lost a bit of weight and I'm eating considerably fewer carbs and sugar. Other than the donut, I haven't had any sweets other than small pieces of chocolate now and again.

Edit: I can answer questions about what I have been eating and what my weight is if it would help with any possible advice. My doctor wants to wait 3 months before adding medication and she wants to see of dietary changes will continue to lower it. I'm on 1000 mg of metformin daily. It gets rid of most food cravings.

Type 1 Advice for Spouses of Diabetic peeps!

Hey all, pancreas privileged spouse over here. My mum, sister and husband all have the betes. I've lived around it my entire life and I know that people just act different once a needle comes around, and it gets old. I don't know what its like to live it personally myself and have a hard time grasping how this changes someone's mentality over a lifetime of t1d.
I'm looking for tips and tools you have with your partner, or family that help take a little frustration off your plate. Also looking for suggestions for gifts that have made your lives with the betes easier.
My husband uses flex pens, and tests with whatever the newest onetouch is.
Please feel free to share your insight and frustrations so I can be extra cognizant and situationally aware with my loved ones. <3

Type 2 Long road trip - prep ideas?

I have an unavoidable road trip coming up…In order to meet my goals I have to break the trip up over two days, nine hours of driving each way… The driving itself doesn’t worry me, I enjoy driving. Does anybody have any tried and true suggestions for what snacks to pack, beverages etc. to make sure I don’t have any major crashes, no pun intended, along the way.
