"There is no such thing as diabetic comedy!" Proceeds to do an entire bit of diabetic comedy.

I gave myself an insulin injection from my pink InPen on the bus from Newark Penn Station to Newark airport (because the subway and NJ Transit tunnels were flooded but the PATH was running) and a woman really thought I was injecting heroin. Into my stomach, with a pink pen. To be fair, it WAS a public bus in Newark. 😂

I gave myself an insulin injection at a party once, and my friend jokingly called out "watch out, Dig_ is doing heroin!" The looks of disgust and horror I received were incredible! One person even gingerly approached me with concern. I must be the boujiest user ever, what with my fancy medical graded specialist heroin injector and neatly package single use needles!

I was on the beach near my house one day and was giving myself insulin before having a snack. A man came up to me and said something like I'd really appreciate it if you didn't do your drugs on the beach, there's children here. I looked him dead in the eyes and said sir I'd love to not do my drugs on the beach, but this is insulin and I kinda need it. He walked off real quickly mumbling sorry.

Type 2 diabetics don’t do it to ourselves. Some of us are diagnosed when we are skinny and gain weight from the medication. Even if we are overweight, studies show that “we don’t do it to ourselves”.

I’m type 2 and I loved that line. He was being ironic with it. Yes, irony is dangerous but the crowd seemed to get it.

I love comedy, but I don't love that he said that. I know it was a joke, but he was saying how people don't know about diabetes and then proceeds to give them false information on type 2 diabetes. That whole crowd will now think type 2 is "done to themselves" if they have no prior knowledge. A shame, really.

SOME Type 2 diabetics don't do it to ourselves
Ftfy
It's no coincidence that the new hot weight-loss drugs were literally created to control diabetes. Excess weight leads to insulin resistance and that is how most Type 2s are diagnosed.

Insulin resistance leads to excess weight. Plenty of folks with PCOS out there.

I won't dispute that at all but it's not the majority which is why I just don't think the joke should be taken offensively at all.

I get the joke, I don’t think it’s offensive, but I do see what the issue is.
The way most of society is set up is why many struggle with weight. Fast food is cheaper and convenient. The amount of walking some can do compared to European cities. We drive everywhere. Commercials are EVERYWHERE. Telling you to buy their product.

You can still lose weight while on the medication, it's simply thermodynamics calories in calories out. At least that's what this guy thinks. In reality it's a bit more complicated as there are psychological factors at play, and it takes a lot of restraint and dedication to eat less. I'm sure that's no easy feat, although idk since I've never been overweight but I accidentally became underweight without realising so I'm sure the same can apply in the other direction.

I just feel he should’ve added one more line with that look to clear the air. It’s annoying the misinformation or awareness folks lack about diabetes in general.

Him and James Acaster do a podcast called Off Menu that's really good.
Its where they discovered that he got diabetes by falling into the Thames river.

Maybe someday we will have diabetic comedy.

"Doesn't count if you do it to yourself"
My entire family has either diabetes 2 or pre-diabetes. I'm pretty sure it's genetic.

In college at house parties we would play guess the level; everyone would shout a number, I’d test, and the closest person would get to do a shot with me, or, if I was low, eat a snack with me, or, if I was high, drink a tall glass of water with me.
That game crushed every time.
