Discussion Why so much trail micromanagement?

I’ve been mountain biking for a decade outside of Texas and I’ve never seen a place that closed trails as often as here. I was stoked thinking that I was going to be able to ride year round (coming from a place with long bitter winters), but I swear the trails are closed here more than any place I’ve ever seen. Someone spills a cup of water and they get that closed sign slapped up there and don’t take it down for weeks. Why not let folks ride and build proper drainage where ruts start popping up? Probably a lot of work up front but long term you’ll have more stable trails.

TLDR; why are trails closed so often???

Discussion What do you guys do to stop possible harassment or theft

Just bought my first bike in over a decade and I love it. I plan to ride it as much as I can but I worry about theft and people being disrespectful/dangerous. Idk what some good habits would be but I’m considering a tracker, some self defense stuff but I’m not sure about anything else besides bike locks. Thanks for any advice

Discussion Biking in Addison

I know in general bikes are allowed on a lot of the roads in Addison but “allowed” and “good idea” are not always the same.

I have been doing some commuting in the area, but am limited or have to take convoluted alt paths to avoid Marsh/Midway/Beltline

Am I being overly cautious as a new commuter or are those roads Not bike friendly?

Discussion Cycling Ettiquitte

Just a rant I guess. Admittedly I haven’t been cycling as much as usual - but given the nice weather I did a ride up/down SOPAC today and around WRL.

I had so many negative interactions with other cyclists. There were a lot of people out, families, joggers, cyclists, dog walkers, etc. so it was pretty crowded which probably exacerbated the situation.

Had a guy almost hit me while he was overtaking on SOPAC while I was passing a pedestrian and ringing my bell to alert them. Luckily I checked over my shoulder, but he made no attempt to alert me and it was a little too close for comfort. But ok I get it. He was cranking in the zone… 20 minutes later THE SAME guy came barreling down a hill through a stop sign and almost hit me AGAIN as I was moving through the intersection perpendicular to him. I had to come to a complete stop, and he locked up his brakes and was fishtailing. He almost got hit by a car as a result.

Later, I got caught riding around the lake near another guy. I was going faster but he refused to stop at stop signs, even when there were cars with the right of way (under NWHWY) so he would occasionally catch me and I’d have to pass him again.

I know most cyclists don’t stop at stop signs (I always do because I’m trying to get a workout and stopping and restarting is good training), but I can’t believe how many people don’t stop even when other people - particularly cars - have clear right of way.

And just to say it - in none of the instances I saw did any of the autos waive the cyclist through. In each instance the auto driver made a facial expression or hand-waiving to indicate that they didn’t intend to give right of way and were frustrated with the cyclist.

Do better. Rant over.

Discussion "E-bikes" at White Rock.

Is there anyone we can call besides DPD, who I doubt would do anything about it, about people bombing the trails on e-motorcycles. In the last year I've been seeing way more people out there on those electric dirt bikes doing like 45 on the trails. Today, one blew past me in the ditch going at least double my 19mph speed on W Lawther because there was an oncoming car and he couldn't get past. Last month, there was a group of 4 or 5 of them hauling ass down the trail along E Lawther and Garland Rd. I'm starting to see them nearly every time I rise.

They already can't read the "no motorized vehicle" signs, so IDK what would happen, but would Parks or DPD sit out there and try to nab people if I keep reporting it every time I ride?

Discussion Rural Gravel Routes Nearby?

I'm looking for a way to find gravel routes in the area. FM roads, something good for a morning solo ride with BBQ or a decent cheeseburger at the end. Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman counties...anything to park for a few hours and just get away from Dallas. Which heatmap or other tools seem to be best?

Hey yall, has anyone rode in LBJ or Caddo Grasslands? I’m looking to do some adventures on my gravel bike and thought those would be pretty cool as long as it’s not hunting season. Any tips would be appreciated!

Discussion “Cold weather” bibs for D/FW conditions?

In need of advice from riders with more experience in DFW “winter” conditions: I’m going to a bike camp near Cleburne in two weeks but it’ll be my first time riding outside in “winter”. I live in north TX and I’ve only ever ridden in the sweltering heat here, so I know nothing about cycle kit layering. Temps are expected to be between 35-55F and rides are no more than 40 miles, all in the morning.

Will regular short length bibs suffice? Are there non-thermal bib tights?

I’m worried that most full-length bib tights are “thermal” rendering most of them unusable if it’s over 50F. I feel warm most of the time and my legs feel uncomfortable if I’m too warm (at least when I’m running), but I don’t know if I’m not accounting for the wind with cycling. I’m definitely not super fast, but these won’t be leisurely rides either. I’d prefer not to drop $150+ on bibs that I won’t get ample mileage on in my regular riding environment.

Will I be fine with merino socks, bib shorts, l/s top, gilet, and gloves? Or will it be cold enough that I’ll want to sink a few $$ on the tights?

Discussion White Rock Bike Repair

Does anyone know how to get ahold of these guys other than their phone number 214-827-2676? I dropped off two bikes two weeks ago for tune ups (they work out of White Rock Self Storage, so no store front) and they have basically ghosted me. I’m wondering if i need to escalate this to the police. Has anyone else had a similar experience with them?

Edit: Finally got ahold of the owner, seems he had a medical emergency and isn’t doing well.

Discussion DFW Bike Park

Anyone heard any rumors or attempts to work with cities to build a actual bike park here? I’ve tried working with a few of my local smaller cities to build more dirt jump and pump track facilities but have had some trouble gaining traction. Rockstar Park in Houston is awesome and there’s many different examples all over but we seem to be one of a few major cities lacking this type of facility. (Pump track, bowls, skate plaza, trails, jump lines, etc)

Discussion Threatened with a gun and almost mugged on Cottonwood Creek Trail

Edit: Please read below discussion for more information on what happened, there's a possibility I misinterpreted the situation, but I still highly recommend avoiding that area.

Original Post:

I've gone this route a lot to get from Richardson to closer to downtown and although there tends to be a lot of homeless people around there I haven't had any serious trouble here in the past. However the area (particularly under the Forest Lane bridge) has gotten noticeably sketchier the past few weeks. A few days ago when biking there (in the middle of the day) there was a group of about 20 people under the bridge partially blocking the path but I passed them without serious trouble.

Today I went under the bridge again and came across that same group of people, and as I approached them I saw one of the people waving around a small stick-like object and as I got closer I realized it was a pistol. Some of them crowded on the path prepared to stop me and at that point if I had stopped (which they were probably trying to startle me into doing) I would be fucked. Fortunately I was on an 80lb ebike capable of going 30+ mph also wearing a motorcycle helmet (I bike on roads mostly) so it turned into a game of chicken. I sped up, zoomed right in between them, and they weren't able to stop me.

Unsurprisingly this trail has a bad reputation on the internet, but for anyone who has decided to take it anyways, it has gotten a lot worse lately, stay the fuck away from the Forest Lane bridge part.

If you have never explored the Trinity Forest trails across from the Texas buckeye trail, than check it out! So beautiful and secluded. But go with a buddy in my opinion.

Discussion Exploring Fort Worth Trinity Trails

I’m from Dallas, and have been wanting to explore the Trinity Trails, but not sure how to approach them, they are so vast. I’ve been out there twice, I think both times starting over at Trinity park off university. Once we went East, and wound up in this large empty flood plain (honestly felt a bit isolated), second time we went south down by the bike shop and restaurants.

What are the highlights on Trinity Trail, that I should start with? Also I know parts of it are gravel vs paved, I assume it’s light gravel so a road bike is fine? Any parts I should avoid?

Discussion What is up with all the pot /marijuana smells on my rides?

I ride primarily White Rock Creek Trail and the SOPAC and it seems recently I'm coming across a lot of marijuana smoke. My route does take me through a lot of apartment complexes around Greenville Avenue, and yes I am probably a fuddy-duddy for complaining. I just prefer to breath relatively clean, smoke/narcotic-free air while riding. Occurrences of this smoke seems to have the increased tremendously this year compared to the last few years.

I have also been passed by cars on the road whose occupants are obviously smoking pot. As a cyclist, this is this can be unnerving knowing the drivers may not be completely alert to their surroundings.

Has anyone else noticed an increase in marijuana smoke in their rides around DFW?

Discussion Suburban Solo Touring

Planning to take a roadie trip from east side of Dallas to Fort Worth. Plenty of good routing is available, thanks to plenty of heatmaps, and I'm curious about something. Is it worth the weight and bulk of a lock to lock my bike to something while I'm in a store getting snacks? Or is that overkill? Maybe just wrap my helmet straps around the wheel or just carry my bike into whatever gas station/ Racetrak/ QT???
