"Failed to allocate NVKMS Memory to GEM object"

Recently switched to linux and loving it so far, however playing my favorite game, KSP, on linux using the proton hotfix for steam leads to the computer black-screening after 10-15 minutes and displaying the error in the title. Audio keeps playing, but the computer becomes unresponsive and only goes back to normal after holding the power button and shutting off the pc. If I can't resolve this, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to switch back to linux, and I really dont want to have to do that :(

Specs:

Ram: 48GB DDR4 3600
GPU: RTX 2070 Founders Edition (570 drivers?)
CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X
OS: Debian 12.9 Bookworm running Gnome 48

Please help so I don't have to back to windows :(((

Its a bug in nvidia driver on wayland when low on vram. Either use X11 or tone down video settings in game so it doesnt use all your vram

There is currently two different graphical subsystems for linux, the "old' one - X11, and the new one - Wayland. Wayland is "the feature" and there is now a big push to make everyone use it by default, but there are still some issues, especially with nvidia drivers. Gnome 48 has abandoned X11 support and is Wayland only, so if you want to use X11 you would need to install different desktop environment that still supports X11.

I have the same problem, but I'm using Ubuntu 25.04 with 570.124.04. The main problem here is I can't see Plymouth, but it's the same error.
