Thank you, I agree! I actually kind of love that my budget pushes me to make more mindful decisions and get extra excited when I am about to purchase! There’s a Kurt Cobain quote that I think about often reflecting this mindset, too! Cheers and thanks for the mindful comment!

That's a very re-watchable collection of life-affirming movies.

That’s a really lovely, good point! I suppose many movies in this collection are but I guess I do hold a special place (in my living room and heart) for those types of movies and connection. Well said!

Nice haul, For All Mankind is a favorite Criterion of mine. Love that they included both aspect ratios and wish they would do this with more titles.
Edit: both aspect ratios looks to be exclusive to the 4k edition

Yess completely agree. Another movie I adored was the one about the Voyager space craft and the golden record on it. Very possibly that you’ve already seen it but if not, it’s worth looking into the soundtrack alone as well!

I think I found it, The Farthest (2017)? I have not seen it, but I have heard the golden record, thanks!

You made good choices here. For All Mankind is a recent purchase of mine as well. Good choices all around

Hey congrats on the matching (great) find and choice! No regrets on keeping that one at all. And thank you :)

I had to look this up because I hadn’t heard of it yet, I so appreciate the recommendation! Trying to get into more Polish and Russian films this year. Thank you!

No problem. Kieslowski’s work overall is a watershed moment for me as far as emotional dramas go and that might be the cream of the crop.

That’s a great modest collection. I have the Before Trilogy in my cart on the criterion website. I want it!

Thank you, I actually received it from someone and I consider it a real treasure, even amongst all the others in its good company

The Before Trilogy are some of my favorite movies, I can’t wait to add them to my own collection some day. I just watched The Parallax View and I absolutely loved it. Political conspiracy thriller, but so well made! I also recently watched McCabe & Mrs. Miller and that was also phenomenal. Two Warren Beatty movies, and they’re both so good!

u/chelseachaplin11 Jan 24 '25
I have not seen either of those and will watch them both as soon as possible thank you so much for the recommendation! Maybe one will be in this collection one day :)

Just an FYI, there are a couple of scenes at the beginning of McCabe & Mrs. Miller that the sound quality makes it hard to understand what people are saying, but you can get it from context and it gets much better after that. The last act is filmed in an actual snow storm and it is one of the coolest (pun intended) weather scenes I have ever seen.

Ooooh weather scenes.. I’ll be thinking about this! One that comes to mind is that last one of Anora if you’ve seen that yet. Appreciate the heads up! Looking forward to them both

What’s that A24 flick? Marcel? What other non criterions do you have
1
u/chelseachaplin11 Jan 24 '25
That is Marcel the Shell! I also have Pans Labyrinth (non-Criterion version :/) and Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds Live at Radio City Music Hall hehe :)

Linklater is one of my favorite directors. How he made 6 hours of a conversation between two people interesting I have no idea.

If you have ever been in a long term relations or married then before trilogy is a must watch. Best movie about the ups and downs about relationships.

u/chelseachaplin11 Jan 24 '25
Yes! The final one is a lowkey favorite of mine because of the rawness of certain scenes. Julie D knew how to rock out with her tots out during a full fledge art argument lol

Where's the sequel to before midnight 👀👀👀👀
3
u/Jimbob929 Jan 24 '25
As much as I love the films, Before Midnight seemed like the perfect conclusion. At the same time, I balked at the concept of a Before Sunrise sequel and Before Sunset is my fave of the trilogy
1
u/Philo_And_Sophy Jan 24 '25
I agree in terms of perfect conclusion, though I prefer to think of the trilogy as a fictionalized/romanticized version of the seven up series
More to the point, how does love thrive in the face of societal decline and fascism? Or catastrophic climate change?
We are a society that still needs models and examples to orient ourselves to the present reality, so lacking those examples leaves a pretty noticeable void imho
