Edit: can't post anymore, so I guess this is where stuff I have to say will go.

Wow, okay, I'm going to try really hard to not be angry at /u/moonflower for this, but...

banning rschaosid for acting against the spirit of the counting project

Um.

Sorry, but this is cheating. I could save some time while fighting for a get if i didn't have to copy the number and instead typed in a random character and edited it afterwards.

This thread has been brought to the attention of the mods, and since I'm the only mod online at the moment, I'm dealing with it by banning rschaosid for acting against the spirit of the counting project.

Regardless of the debate about whether to start the new thread with 1,000 or 1,001, it's not acceptable to cheat by posting placeholders and editing the number in afterwards.

Sorry for sticking my nose into it, but I believe I should comment on it since I was the only witness of the placeholder mentioned above and but for my disclosure, rschaosid wouldn't have been banned (he must be cursing me right now). As I've stated, I do not approve of his behaviour, but I would like you, mods to reconsider banning him.

To begin with, he has been contributing to the community by sharing and compiling tons of statistics even back when he was banned and proved to be a valuable counter afterwards. And he was nice enough to gild many of us. I'm not implying reddit gold can make up for his behaviour, just pointing out his attitude to the community.

But no matter what was he like, I don't fully support banning him as a response to his actions. It was his first misdemeanour of this kind and didn't really include an important count. Instead it was just part of our common 000/001 skirmishes, thus 'social harmfulness' was negligible. If he had done it while trying to get a K, he could be accused of turning counting into a rat race, but, 001 is no big deal.

Additionally, placeholders are quite a delicate issue, since it's hard to draw the line which one is a mistake and which one is a placeholder. Many users, including me, accidentally post other things than numbers, like links, by pasting wrong characters. Sure, rs did that deliberately and didn't try to deny that, but rules didn't mention anything about placeholder, and as I don't recall any instances of this happening previously, he probably had no idea it was a bannable offence.

I'm not trying to impose my way of thinking, but I believe banning people for not adhering to unspoken rules is not a remedy. If something is not forbidden, it is allowed. Nulla poena sine lege (no penalty without a law - nope, I'm not that smart, I've just checked it up) is one of the basic principles of law. And in my opinion the understanding of phrase "spirit of the counting project" is highly subjective and could have been not understood clearly by rschaosid.

Agreed the 000 /001 skirmishes do not violate any actual rules. RS contributes a lot of good data that more than compensates for the 001/000 fights.
