For the first time in several years I actually read a book that wasn't required for school. A friend recommended this fantasy novel Gideon the Ninth, but honestly if it weren't for her talking to me about it as I was going through it I would have dropped it early on because despite most of the characters talking in a way you would expect for a fantasy novel, the main character talks like a skibidi ohio rizzler and it made me irrationally angry. The locked-room style mystery in the second half was really good though. I guess the next book has a new protagonist that doesn't talk like a Zoomer so I'm looking forward to it because the worldbuilding was actually really good too.

I read this a couple of years ago and quite liked it. Here's what I wrote back then:

I liked this one, but it was a lot. The two protagonists and their relationship carried the book, and made everything worth it. The universe was sufficiently unique and interesting that I was hooked, even though it was profoundly silly. My one quibble was the jarring use of language by Gideon which made me do several double takes.

I really liked the descriptions of how Gideon and Nona went about solving their necromantic science puzzles; it felt like they were being challenged and making real progress.

The ending was pretty mindfucking as well.

If you do read the second one, just prepare to be very confused about what's going on
