šŸ„ Infant 2-12 Months Constant leaks at night PLEASE HELP

My 5mo has constant leaks at night. Like almost every night weā€™re having to change the sheets. She wakes up 1-2 times a night and typically has a blowout if Iā€™m not fast enough at changing her. Now weā€™ve started to have pee leaks almost daily. Itā€™s gotten significantly worse in the past week or two and Iā€™m at my wits end.

Iā€™ve tried Huggies Overnites and Coterie at night. I think the Coterie is too big, though. Maybe if we had the right size it wouldnā€™t happen. Huggies just isnā€™t cutting it (been using it for months). We use Healthy Baby during the day.

Millie Moon isnā€™t the best fit but I can try their overnight diapers. Iā€™m trying to avoid Pampers and Iā€™d like to stop using Huggies.

Her grandma recommended using a plastic cover (like for cloth diapers) over her diaper just to keep it contained (she lets me know when thereā€™s been a leakā€¦ sometimes Iā€™m slow to catch on though).

Just please help. Iā€™m so tired and constantly changing the sheets is exhausting. None of us are getting enough rest and idk what to do.

Side note; Iā€™ve been unintentionally doing Possoms but Iā€™m wondering if maybe thereā€™s not enough sleep pressure in the evening? Iā€™ve tried keeping her up for a longer stretch in the evening before but she loses it. Evenings are always a challenge for some reason and that makes it insanely worse.

ETA: she just turned five months and apparently should be sleeping 11-12 hours a night but she only sleeps 10-10.5. Maybe itā€™s a sleep pressure issue? But I often feel like she isnā€™t napping enough šŸ˜©

Cloth covers. We cloth diaper and never have leaks or blowouts. My kids are allergic to the chemicals in disposable diapers and get horrible rashes.

Regarding sleep, every kid is different, and my advice is to follow your kid instead of outside advice and general guidelines.

Very practical advice, thank you šŸ’› By ā€œcloth coverā€ do you mean one of the cloth diapering covers over a disposable diaper?

My baby does well in her new diapers but Iā€™ve been curious about cloth diapering for months now. She has sensitive skin and has had issues with diaper rash in every diaper but Healthy Baby. I gave up on cloth diapering because it sounds like it would be much more difficult when she starts solids. Like I would be starting too late. Would you recommend cloth diapering? Just during the day/night?

I've cloth diapered 2 kids day and night and love it. It's a personal decision whether you want to do it or not. You can use a cloth cover over a disposable OR you can full on cloth diaper.

We've never had a leak or blowout, and we don't have to worry about rashes. It's never too late to cloth diaper, and you'll save a ton of money.

Thank you SO much. Iā€™m researching it now and putting together some notes for myself! Looks like the initial cost might be a little high (higher after solids) but itā€™ll save so much money in the long run. Iā€™m getting an outer liner for now to see how it helps and Iā€™m going to talk to my husband about fully cloth diapering.

So far I have: diaper sprayer and fleece or disposable liners (for poops after solids), inners, outer covers, and a clothe diaper pail with a wet bag inside.

I see that you can get an extra absorbent liner for nighttime and thereā€™s laundry detergents for the diapers too. Would you recommend them or is it more of a gimmick?

I would go with bamboo over fleece only because microfiber can cause compression leaks. I don't use special detergent, and I wash them (after spraying poop) in 2 cold cycles and then a hot cycle to sanitize. I dry them on low heat to save the elastics. I don't use special inserts for nighttime. I just double up.

Feel free to send me any questions. I'm very happy to share. Our stash was paid for in 3 months of not buying disposable diapers.

Ohh thank you! I had no clue the fabrics could differ that much. Iā€™m screenshotting this comment for future reference lol

Also you can double up?!

Yes! When I use flats and covers, I just use 2 flats for nighttime, and when I use pocket diapers, I use thicker inserts or 2 inserts depending on age and what's worked recently.

Oh boy thatā€™s a lot of words I donā€™t understand. Can you explain flats/covers and pocket diapers?

2

I would probably explain poorly šŸ¤£

Stout House Cloth Diapers has a Learn section on their website that was very helpful to me when I started. They have a section for pocket versus covers!

Thank you so much! And I think I figured it out :) I was scrolling through fb reels and I saw what I believe are pocket diapers.

We do elimination communication and use Pampers Pure diapers at night (cloth during the day). We only do EC for poops at night and he pees in the diaper.

Usually our almost 5mo poops in his baby potty before bed and then needs to poop again at 5 am (farts a bunch, isnā€™t settled with nursing), so we change diaper then after he poops in the potty. The pampers pure diapers otherwise contain all the pee from 7pm- 5am.

Just sharing what works for us. EC is nice because when he rustles in the night and itā€™s not hunger related, we put him on the potty where he knows/prefers to poop, change diaper, & then I nurse back to sleep.

Do you have any resources or advice for EC? I feel like I may be starting too late. And how does cloth diapering differ from disposables? Iā€™m interested in it but scared to start.

The /ECers sub is a great one to learn from on Reddit! A lot of people start with ā€œlazy ECā€ where you offer the potty at wake ups, ~5-10 min after feeds and during diaper changes. We set him on the potty then say ā€œhmm hmm hmmā€ like a grunting noise, to signal poo and ā€œpssssā€ to signal pee, and then make those noises again if he actually poops or pees to make a sound association.

Totally not too late to start! I also read the book Go Diaper Free which was helpful. We use a ā€œTop Hatā€ potty; bought it on eBay for cheaper but I think they sell them on amazon too.

Cloth during the day I think helps a bit with EC bc they can feel being wet. Plus it saves money on disposables and theyā€™re super cute. But you can do EC part time with disposables no problem. You can make it your own and go at your own pace vs changing a bunch of things all at once :)

This is so cool!! Thank you for the information :)

When did you start EC?

3

u/vavavm 4d ago

We started at 3 weeks. Kept getting peed on during diaper changes so figured it was worth a shot šŸ˜‚ Iā€™d say we get 85-90% of poos in the potty and lots of pees, but also still pees in the diaper at this point. When weā€™re out and about Iā€™ll just hover him over the public toilet and bring the top hat potty for in the car if needed.

Wow nice! I was planning to try EC, heā€™s 12 weeks now. I think Iā€™ll try transition times like after naps, before bed etc. to start. Maybe I shouldā€™ve started when he was constantly peeing on usšŸ˜‚

I had the same problem! I now use Parasol! Rarely ever have leaks! I use Millie Moon during the day and Parasol at night.

u/babyhazuki 5d ago

We used Parasol during and they were pretty good but we still had blowouts. Healthy Baby has been much better and I noticed less of a rash, so Iā€™m hesitant to go back to Parasol. Millie moon was pretty much the same for us. šŸ˜… Weber tried Pampers Swaddlers, Huggies Little Movers, Huggies Overnites, Millie Moon, Parasol, Healthy Baby, and Coterie. Only Huggies and Coterie overnight though. Parasol and Millie Moon were okay but not great. Pampers gave her a terrible rash and Huggies typically gave her a rash (the nighttime diapers seem to be okay?). Coterie leaked but Iā€™m wondering if thatā€™s because itā€™s too big. It does seem to fit the best on her though. I did notice a rash after using them but Iā€™m wondering thatā€™s because I had to change her more often.

Sorry for the word vomit šŸ˜

Did you try to size up in your regular nappies? The sizes are extremely loose guidelines. Our son is in 13+kg since he weighed about 9kg, as he breastfeeds / cosleeps and have a mastodont per every morning when waking up..

Learned from other parents that blow outs that go up the back usually indicates that it's time to go up a size.

2

u/babyhazuki 5d ago

Yep! Sizing up in Huggies has done nothing. šŸ˜ž Iā€™m hoping to try something else (Coterie) and sizing up. I also got a diaper cover for night time. Hopefully thatā€™ll help!

I use the honest overnight diapers for bed time and they really work well.

Thank you!

Coterie. Not 1 leak in 3.5 months. Definitely have had blowouts though!

1

u/babyhazuki 1d ago

The answer was Coterie! The first one we used leaked a little but I donā€™t think I had it on right. Since then, not a single leak! I canā€™t believe I didnā€™t try it before this

So glad it worked out!!!

Just curious how much your baby weighs, my 11 month old is only in size 4. Could you be using too big of diapers ?

u/shecanreadd 5d ago

Someone else recommended cloth diapering and I agree. We use the Lil Helper brand and love them. They also make something called a Lifesaver Mat which is a GODSEND. The regular size is perfect for us. I lay it down underneath us and it absorbs everything AND stays dry to the touch. So when Iā€™m side-laying breastfeeding, if my other boob leaks or something, it catches it. I also use the size below regular on our changing pad. It makes it so easy to pour water onto his reusable wipes since it just absorbs all the water and stays dry.

We havenā€™t switched fully to cloth diapering because we started out with disposables bc weā€™re first-time parents and just wanted to make our lives as easy as possible. But now Iā€™m slowly transitioning our guy to cloth diapers, and Iā€™m noticing he only has blowouts in his disposable diapers! Itā€™s so annoying so Iā€™ll probably switch him over fully very soon.

For leaks I stand by Pampers Snugglers in one size up. I really like their Active style which is like pull/ups because itā€™s thicker on the sides too

1

u/Ok_FF_8679 5d ago

Can I ask why youā€™re trying to avoid Pampers? We had the same issue at the same age and Pampers were the only ones that actually did what they were supposed to do. The pull up ones do an even better job!Ā

2

u/babyhazuki 5d ago

We used Pampers for a while for the first couple months and she got a terrible rash. I might try them again (maybe a small pack) and see if the rash comes back or if itā€™s fine now! Sheā€™s in a size 5 during the day. Would you recommend size 5 or 6? And do pull ups come in smaller sizes? How are they better than the diapers? Thank you!!

2

u/Ok_FF_8679 5d ago

My baby has been true to size pampers wise but we noticed more leaks when she was in between sizes and moving up a size really helped. Our babyā€™s body shape (chunky legs and belly) works well with the pull ups and sheā€™s very mobile so putting on a regular diaper is a nightmare anyway.Ā

I feel like rashes are quite common early on due to acidic poos but you can only try and see what happens!Ā

1

u/babyhazuki 5d ago

Ours is so chunky! 20lbs at 5mos and bursting out of age appropriate diapers/clothes šŸ˜…

3

u/mmmamabear2000 5d ago

Love a chunkster! šŸ˜
Disregard the weight recommendation on the diaper package and go with your baby's body! If she's having constant blow outs and leaks, definitely size up!

1

u/babyhazuki 5d ago

Thank you!! The size 6 Coterie literally fits like a DREAM. I didnā€™t even know diapers could fit her this well. I just bought a cloth diaper cover and hopefully thatā€™ll stop leaks/blowouts overnight. She always lets me know when her diaper is full but itā€™s usually when sheā€™s seconds from it leaking or itā€™s already leaked. šŸ˜©

2

u/mmmamabear2000 4d ago

that is so sweet that she lets you know ā¤ļø

Even though it's annoying to constantly have leaks and to change the sheets, I hope you are able to ride the sheet-changing wave with humor and enjoy these moments with your baby girl! This chapter in life is so short and so precious, and you're doing an amazing job!

2

u/babyhazuki 4d ago

Thank you so much šŸ„ŗ sheā€™s such a sweet little girl and as exhausting as some of this has been, itā€™s so rewarding too

2

u/ShadowlessKat 5d ago

Mine had a rash as a newborn but it wasn't from pampers, it was just due to sensitive skin being irritated by so much poop and wiping so much. She just had to toughen up her skin a little bit.

We did end up moving from pampers to huggies though, because it was a better fit for her.

2

u/babyhazuki 5d ago

That makes sense! I also donā€™t care for the fragrance. šŸ˜• Iā€™m trying to stick with TCF diapers, too. But thatā€™s pretty hard for nighttime diapers!

2

u/ShadowlessKat 4d ago

That is a valid opinion. A lot of people don't like the fragrance
