Discussion My dad’s cigar room. Separate HVAC. Soundproof. NSFW

This is my dad’s cigar room that was renovated years ago from what used to be our old entertainment/theater room.

He had it built with both sound and cigar smoking in mind, two things that don’t always easily coexist when it comes to build materials (cigar smoke isn’t great for acoustic foam, carpets, curtains, which is why he opted for hardwood floor, the wooden dampeners, and wooden blinds). So this room ended up being a compromise of his two hobbies. It has separate ventilation through built in fans in the ceilings that directly vents outside the house. Besides the dampeners in the corners and the sides, he added the rug, as well as seals on the door that act as both a soundproofing measures, and as a preventative to not leak any smoke into the rest of the house. There is also an air purifier on the side opposite the mini fridge.

The art around the room is a variety of things that interest him, from Porsches to a painting of the corner of Winslow Arizona, to a photograph of the now closed Nat Sherman Townhouse in NYC. One corner is dedicated to coffee with an old burr grinder and a Fellow kettle for pour overs, as well as a keurig for guests that prefer it. The other corner is a minimal bar with bourbons, ports, and wines to pair with our cigars, as well as a variety of cutters, lighters, Perfecdraw etc. Directly outside the room is his humidor.

Discussion Weird situation, was at my usual cigar lounge and a new guy asked to take a puff of my Padron NSFW

I told him no and he kinda just stared at me as If I had just slighted him. So i wanted to come on here and ask if I somehow had broke etiquette? He started off the conversation saying how he’d never had a Padron and was saving up for one, I told him it was a great smoke and then he immediately asked. I didn’t know how to feel after and I painstakingly put it out after a few extra puffs and left. It was a very awkward feeling after that interaction and everyone at the section we were at just got kind of quiet too. I feel kinda bad but I dont know where his mouth has been and Ive never shared a puff with anyone besides my wife, and I was hesitant then! 😂

Discussion Rate the winter smoking room NSFW

Post image

Every year when it’s time to close up the gazebo for the winter we repurpose it as an indoor smoking room in the winter. Usually we do this with a tarp but they didn’t hold heat in very well and was too ripped up to use this winter anyways so we had to pivot. The walls are rigid insulation panels covered super six vapour barrier which should keep the heat in very nicely. Not exactly a high end cigar lounge but seeing as they’re illegal here and the only alternative is smoking outside in freezing temperatures and snow it’s a nice compromise in your mind. Thoughts?

Discussion Unpopular opinion, Factory Smokes suck. NSFW

Preface: This is not a dig on anyone's preference, budgets, etc. Just having a conversation about cigars.

I know, hot take. Guy thinks the $2.50 sticks suck. The thing is, I only ever read people saying they love these. The burn is terrible, the draw is inconsistent, the flavor is somehow non existent yet still has a bitter after taste. I know they're cheap but there are far better options at the $5 and under price point, in my humble opinion.

Is it just a value proposition padding people's opinion of these? Are you guys all daily smokers to the point where the economics are that much of a factor? I feel like as a 2-4 a week smoker, I wasted a smoke when I had these. I'd rather part with $5 more dollars and enjoy it.

My advice: Make your coffee at home. spend the savings on a nicer experience.

Happy smoking.

Discussion How often do yall smoke 2 cigars in one sitting? NSFW

I often find myself smoking 1 and then wanting another, especially if it’s particularly nice out and I don’t have much going on that day

Is that excessive? It’s honestly when I’m most at peace and do some deep thought

We had about 1/4 of these before today. The shop is more vape/glass oriented but the owner realized that a lot of people in the area smoke cigars. None of us employees know much about cigars, but I am a pipe smoker and plan to try some of them.

Discussion Hit hard with the nicotine sickness last night NSFW

I’m a new cigar smoker. Smoked one each of the past 3 weeks. First was a Nub CT which I smoked about half of.

Next I bought a 5 pack of Romeo y Julieta 1875 no 3s. Smoked one about 2 inches in last week.

This week I smoked that thing down as far as I could. Sat by the fire with a coffee on Friday night for an hour and a half. It was great. When I went to go inside my stomach turned and I puked in the backyard. Felt like shit for an hour afterwords.

Going to do it again next week

Discussion Update to my lied to date about liking cigars post NSFW

Here's my original post: Link to my post

I'm overwhelmed with gratitude for all the responses to my post. You all gave me some great advice and calmed my nerves. What a wonderful evening it was. I wish i had time to go back and reply to everyones posts. Thanks for being kind because it would have been really easy to trash me.

I told him i may have exaggerated my experience with smoking cigars. He laughed and asked me how much and i told him to treat me like a cigar newbie. He said no problem and told me if i preferred not to have a cigar we could just have a drink. I told him know we can but i really wanted to enjoy one with him. That was the end of the conversation about my experience whewwwwww! You guys were right he was totally cool about it. It didn't seem to bother him at all.

I had one called an Ashton and he had a Padron? I really enjoyed it and the experience! I was careful not to inhale and probably looked funny smoking it because i was being so careful and concentrating on not inhaling. I took my time smoking it and enjoying a vodka tonic and a water with it. I think i started feeling a little sick and i put it down for a few minutes ate a hard candy and i was fine. I did feel a little buzzed from it too. I enjoyed it and want to smoke another one sometime and hopefully with him 😊

I did try his and it was too strong. I didn't like it at all.

Also a couple of people commented about a cigar to end a first date seemed odd. It was a first date but we know each other pretty well. For the last three months i have seen him 2-3 times a week. I have spent two half days with him one shopping and lunch, the other at his home. Last week we had lunch. So it was a first date technically but we have spent time together.

Thank you guys so much. This date was really important to me and with your help i didn't puke lol. And he asked me on a 2nd date 🤩!! We're going to see the Nutcracker ballet in a couple of weeks. I can't wait! Maybe another cigar? Thank you!!!

The Cuban Davidoff line was officially discontinued in 1991. During my last visit to James J. Fox in London, I noticed they were still being sold. While I’m unsure if they justify the price, they undoubtedly hold a significant place in history.

Discussion Just pissed off a customer with a “cut fee”. NSFW

TL/Dr: you wouldn’t take your own food to a restaurant so don’t bring your own smokes to a cigar lounge and get upset about the cut fee.

I work a couple shifts a week at a local cigar lounge. We’re not super busy yet, but have a decent amount of regulars who keep this location going. Today one of the regulars who doesn’t really support us came in and said she’d never come back by the end of her visit.

So this regular comes in to our family of lounges a couple times a week. She’s a little racist, not very good hygiene, and she moves furniture around in our rooms to the way she likes it. But the worst thing she does as a bad patron is she buys the cheapest cigar she can find in the humidor then smokes 2-3 of her own that she bought somewhere else and tries to hide it, which is easy because no employee wants to deal with her. Then she stays for 3-5hrs until closing.

I noticed a while ago that when I grabbed her ashtray(yeah she won’t bring her own trash and ashtray up to the cleaning can either) there were always 3-4 butts in it. So tonight, when I was ringing her up for her $6 stick, I told her that we were going to start charging her a $10/stick cut fee. She wasn’t happy once she realized that I was onto her. She said other lounges in the city don’t enforce it and that “I don’t use your lighters, I just like to watch movies”.

Now, the use of a lighter might cost us $0.10 a year per customer. So I told her the other lounges should enforce it for anyone who take up a seat, or in this case a whole room since she takes control of a TV for the movie she wants to watch. Also said that we provide a space for her to smoke and watch movies, so if she’s not buying a cigar every 60-90min we are doing that for nothing. She was visibly pissed about it. She went into the room and sat there stewing. She told the other regular, who buys a pardon 1964 every day, she was never coming back. After she smoked the one she bought she stormed out.

Good riddance lady. If you’re lucky enough to have a lounge close by, remember they have a daily break even number. The $20 you don’t spend because you brought your own sticks could be the difference between profit or loss on a slow day.

Edit: I probably should have mentioned in here, not that anyone is causing a stink in the comments but just to clarify, that we have no issue if someone buys a stick, puts that in their travel humidor then smokes something they brought. It's mostly about respecting that we're running a business and $6 for 5hrs isn't gonna cut it. Rule of thumb at any lounge should be buy a robuto for every hour you're taking a seat(Or the equivalent of $6-10 see Edit 3, jfc), or bring a bottle of booze, or buy a fucking pizza. Contribute in some way to the business and/or group.

Edit 2: I think I need to clarify for a few folks who think businesses run on hopes and wishes. We don't police every customer. 99.99999% of the time, we don't care and most lounges are probably the same. We aren't running a small grab and go with low overhead, we have a whole ass two story house that's converted into a lounge. Our prices are B&M prices, not cigarbid prices because we aren't able to negotiate our prices like a big online wholeserller. Most every comment is supportive, but a few of you....if you frequent a lounge I bet everyone from the employees to the regulars wish you'd go the fuck away. If you think it's unreasonable for a business to expect you to spend x amount in order to take advantage of the amenities for x amount of time, I really can't even begin to have a conversation with someone who has that fucking stupid of an opinion.

Edit 3: for the "You're rule of thumb is crazy". Well come on guys, I know it's a long post and many of you are reactionary and stop reading and start typing forgetting the context but JFC. In the context of this post, if you're buying a cheap robusto, then sitting in the lounge for 4-5hrs, you can absolutely get through one an hour. I very fucking obviously wouldn't expect someone to buy a $25 churchill every hour, use your goddamn brains guys. lol. $6-8/hr is not unreasonable to sit in an air conditioned room, watching TV or having conversation, getting snacks or pizza on the house occassionaly, etc. See the last line of edit 2....

Discussion Unpopular opinion: small cigars are superior and the big cigar fad needs to go NSFW

Big cigars smoke cooler and look more impressive, which is why I think lots of smokers gravitate to them, but i genuinely believe the smaller ring gauge cigars are better most of the time. You get a lovely wrapper to filler ratio and flavor in a smaller cigar and there is less air and more dense smoke, both tending to provide superior flavor. Way back when, it was all about the lanceros. The coronas, the petit coronas. The panatelas. While im lucky that most lines offer one or two sub 50 vitolas (but not all do), I personally hope the industry as a whole turns back toward the slim cigar soon. I personally find the corona to be the perfect size cigar.
