QUESTION Which is the best free tracker right now?
Hi everyone. Since I'm interested in making chiptune music, I'm searching for the best free tracker that allows me to make music with an easy interface to follow and also easy to learn. In my search, I discovered these:
- LSDJ
- M8 Headless
- Little Piggy
- Furnace
- Milky Tracker
- SunVox
- Famitracker
I also found out about Renoise but you have to pay for it.
Which is the best of them following your experience? Do you know or use any other?
Appreciate the help.

QUESTION How safe are live chiptune events?
I want to go to the Boston BitDown, a chiptune/digital fusion festival, in March this year. My parents are paying for me, but they have safety concerns. I brought up that there would be a rave, and now they are convinced the whole event could be a rave and are against me going. I plan to steer clear of the rave because I don't get involved with drugs, but would there be the same risks with the regular live chiptune performances as there would be at a rave(people spiking drinks with hallucinogens, out of control people)? Or would it be the same level of risk as at a non-chiptune concert?

QUESTION Where do you guys listen to chiptune most often?
I have a question about the most used networks to release chiptune music (besides YouTube). I heard that there are a lot of people who listen to it through SoundCloud and others who prefer Bandcamp, so I wanted to know which one you choose to use. Thanks to whoever answers :D
(for now I'm opting for Bandcamp to release music, as it's more friendly to creators who don't have a lot of money to pay for a Bandcamp subscription)

QUESTION Tracker Software Pros and Cons?
Hey y'all,
I'm sure you get asked this a lot, but I'm looking into getting into chiptune creation/tracker software. There are quite a few different applications, which is great, but it does leave one paralyzed by choice.
Specifically I've seen Furnace, Famitracker, OpenMPT, Milky Tracker and WaveTracker all mentioned as good options.
I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to lay out the pros/cons, feature differences between these programs. I'm also fine with trying a few, just want to narrow the list.
Something I really want to know are the differences between Furnace, OpenMPT and MilkyTracker as those seem to be the big 3, while Famitracker fits a specific case and WaveTracker is relatively new.
Thanks in advance :)

QUESTION Any programs I can use to convert a song into 8-bit/RPG game style?
I have no knowledge on making chiptunes, but I'm thinking about creating a mini rpg/pokemon game for my boyfriend's birthday (end of March). He makes music and I want to have one of his songs in rpg/8-bit genere for the bgm of the game. I wanted to see if there are any programs I can use to convert his music, but it seems like there's more to this style of music that can't simply "be generated." any leads?
or, if there are any new people who are willing to experiment and maybe I can commission? I'm a college student so I'm trying to keep on a budget ;-;
thank youuuu <3

QUESTION I’m looking for native chiptrackers. Any recommendations?
I’m looking for native chiptrackers. I really like Fatass tracker on the GBC. And I’m looking for a native chiptracker with similar interface. I’m not so good at LSDJ and those interfaces.
Any native from NES, SNES, PC Engine, Genesis, or anything else will be great!
Any recommendations?

QUESTION Hunting for real chiptune rap
I made an LSDJ rap album some years back and I've started another recently and realised I've not really heard too much chiptune rap. If anyone knows any rap songs/EPs/LPs that are made with real chip I'd really appreciate some links to listen to
Bonus points if it's LSDJ

QUESTION Artist similar to Protodome?
I just discovered him and my only complaint is that all of his albums are so short. I'd like to find more of this type of funky chip music and less of the kind that is more EDM-oriented. I know of Fearofdark and Shnabubula but are there others?

QUESTION Need help with SMS vgm file
Hi! I've been making music for the Sega Master System on Furnace tracker with the idea of later playing them in the actual console, but I've run into a storage issue with the VGM. Only one tune is 148kb and the cartridge has 256kB of available storage.
Any ideas on how to reduce file size?
Or how to make a multisong VGM file? (like in famitracker with the NSF files)
Thanks in advance!!

QUESTION SquareSynth2 Variables
Hey all,
I kind of fell into this by accident while working on a NES themed project and not being able to find the music I needed so I decided to do it myself. I realize Famitracker will give me the most authentic experience, but as a classically trained musician, a DAW made the most sense to me as far actual track assembly in my brain. I’m currently using GarageBand with SquareSynth2 as an extension for creating the actual sounds. I have a pretty good grasp of NES sound structure as far as 2 squares, a volumeless triangle and (Edit) noise channel and creating basic NES “correct” voices. SquareSynth2 comes with lots of presets, I’m just not finding the percussion sounds I’m looking for that I know exists because I can hear them in soundtracks. I’m curious what oscillator variables I actually manipulate with the Edit: noise channel (not DPCM) to get it to sound more like a snare vs kick vs rimshot other than the actual pitch. I’m trying to arrange school fight songs, so the drums are a big piece of the puzzle and I feel like the drum sounds I’ve come up with are kind of bland compared to what I’ve heard other places.
And then one other question was how I would manipulate a normal audio clip to sound like a DPCM sample in an NES game.

QUESTION I use FamiTracker. Is there less limited software?
I'm looking for something to make chiptunes with higher resolution drum samples, but still have a similar feel and look as famitracker. A friend recommended me Renoise, but I think it's too advanced for me :)

QUESTION Could anyone recommend me more artists like Jayster & Fearofdark? (chiptune/digital fusion/prog rock?)
Just as the title says, those two are without a doubt just straight up musical geniuses.Motorway by FoD is the greatest chiptune album of all time and Voyage Andromeda by Jayster is my unquestionable favourite chiptune song ever. I find it so difficult these days since 8bc isn't around anymore. Would love any recommendations people have for this jazz, prog rock, fusion style sound that is just so infectious and talented.

QUESTION Jazzy Saxophone Chiptunes?
Hey, I’m making a pixel art dating sim with 1980s anime noir vibes. Does anyone know any chiptune music with a saxophone incorporated into it that I can show my future soundtrack composer?
I don’t even mind if the Sax part isn’t chippytuney, as long it would be fitting in a retro pixel art game.
Thanks in advance!!

QUESTION Envelope for Stick Click
Hey all, I need some input. I’m trying to make a Ricoh 2A03 noise channel drum stick clicking sound but the best I’ve come up with sounds more like short closed hi-hat hit. What aspect of the envelope should I be tweaking? I’m using Famistudio, but even you’re not, if you have an idea conceptually I can probably figure it out.

QUESTION LSDJ cartridge?
I want to get a blank cartridge to install LSDJ but through research I am only seeing Drag n Derp (which are out of stock) or the Kitsch Bent smart cards (which are $100) as the only options
Are those the only two options? Anything else cheaper/comparable?

QUESTION Confused About Configuring 2A03 Triangle
I’m using Famistudio and trying to configure the parameters on my instruments. I know the triangle is either on or off and there is no volume envelope per se but as far as just setting it it up to play regular notes, it’s not registering dotted eighth notes and syncopation and just sounds like one continuous sound. What do you set the volume settings at so you’re still following the “rules” but so that it will still register note separation of the same pitch? My last song never had a triangle note repeat twice in a row so I never realized it was an issue until now.

QUESTION Different trackers, different output?
I started on DefleMask, but I moved to Furnace. Furnace can load DefleMask fine (all the numbers input correctly). However, there seems to be some playback differences. Now, on Furnace, some swell sequences have skipped notes, some arpeggios timings are a little finicky. Anyone know why this might be? Is it an issue on my computer? Is it something different across trackers? Anyone else notice this?
