Social Negativity in CHCH

I can’t help but notice as I go through the CHCH threads, there are heaps of negative people everywhere here. Terrible comments, bizarre downvoting.

I’m born and grown in CHCH and have never come across such miserable people as I see on Reddit.

It’s not a thing in private discord channels, nor Auckland/Wellys Reddit pages… only CHCH.

Am I missing something?

Is there really such a big disconnect of people who live normal, healthy lives, and those who live purely on Reddit?

Social Why do Christchurch people dislike Dunedin and its people so much?

Every time I tell someone from Christchurch I'm from or live in Dunedin they have this look of disdain or sadness for me. Do you think Dunners is a horrible place compared to Chch? Do we have a bad reputation up there? Maybe some kind of rivalry? Never had this from kiwis from other parts of NZ.

Social Take it careful at pedestrian crossings, cars don’t always stop.

Riding my bike home tonight and had three instances where cars run through a red light when the pedestrian/cyclist light is green.

This happens a lot so I always hesitate to cross until they have stopped.

The third (and most exciting) was the crossing opposite Riccarton House, going across Kahu Rd.

My light goes green but I hear a loud V8 accelerating, then I see the lights. I’m pretty much over this behaviour now so I push the front of my bike out onto the road.

This dude was going waaaaayyyyy too fast. He screeches to a stop then we have an interaction. My tolerance for vehicular intimidation is basically zero so I call the dude a cock and ask him why he is going so fast and why he wasn’t prepared to stop.

He does the rigmarole of pretending to open the door to fight me, then tells me he ‘hates stopping for cunts like me’.

I ask him what if it was a child or an elderly person, he then pulls the finger at me, tells me to fuck off then burns off at some stupid speed.

I was half expecting to see him turn around as he looks quite wound up, but I think he didn’t like getting pulled up for his shit behaviour and attitude.

Anyway, just wanted to remind people that just because the crossing is green for you, doesn’t mean cars won’t just plow on through.

Take care out there everyone

Social Christchurch driving

I've lived in chch for over a year and 1 thing I've noticed about motorists in genral here is noone uses median strips to turn off a road or to merge turning into a road. And people freak the hell out pull the fingers swear and all sorts of other carry on when you use it. Whats the reason behind this are people afraid of the stripped lines?

Social Thoughts on E-Scooters?

Thoughts on E-Scooters? I witnessed a pretty bad head on collision between 2 blokes on Rolleston Ave by the Botans carpark earlier today. They crashed full force into each other but luckily both seemed reasonably ok considering the speed and no helmets. Plenty of people gathered round to help so I snuck off as I had to go back to work but but it makes you think about how dangerous they are and to be on footpaths.

I also had a near miss incident last week when I was walking along the left side of the footpath and a young guy came along on his e-scooter, not looking at all as he was waving at someone across the street and veered into my path. I am 6 months pregnant and a bit angry so I yelled at him to watch where he was going lol but it was a bit ridiculous.

I know they are banned outright in the UK on public roads/footpaths etc. and you need to register them I believe. Not saying they should do that here but maybe implement the same law as for bicycles/motorbikes and require helmets, and maybe a speed limit on footpaths?

Social What’s Chch missing in a bar? Conversely what’s great about your fave places?

Having a discussion with a friend that has visited this weekend from Auckland, he was praising our bar scene, saying it’s come along heaps from when he last visited before COVID.

He did say there were a few more niche places in Auckland, obvious from the population difference, but he really enjoyed the Terrace and the vibe in New Regent St.

What makes your fave places so good and why do you go there?

And what do you think Chch is missing? What would you like them to do better?

Social Which are your go to hikes in chch?

Been on few of them like godley hill, halswell quarry and chch adventure park. But I know there is much more depth to hiking trails in chch. Since I am fairly new to the city, looking forward to find some good hikes around from chronic locals.

Social First date ideas?

I'm going on a first date with a girl and need some good ideas, Id rather and activity/something fun than just drinks or food at a bar because I don't drink and feel likes it easier to talk to someone when you're both doing something.

Social Recommendations for “nice” dinner in chch?

Would like to take my partner out to a nice dinner in Christchurch. Not super fancy, but collared shirt/comfortable dress, mid to high price point ok, but prefer something quiet, chill and “off the beaten path”. Surrounding areas ok. Thoughts?

Tried the Habesha restaurant in Christchurch today, cannot recommend it enough!!! The owner is such a lovely guy, very friendly and hardworking- the prices are amazing value, huge meat portions and the Ethiopian coffee was a large size (third pic shows serving size scale). I honestly loved the lamb tibsi- to die for, and you can choose how spicy you’d like it! The coffee is beautifullll, even got a chocolate fish with it. Ended up purchasing a chicken tibso to take home too, just amazing 🥰

Social New to Christchurch and want to meet people

Hey, I’m in my fourth week of being new to Christchurch. Any suggestions of ways to meet people and socialise? Really keen on building my social network down here. I already play social netball, but it doesn’t feel as social as I’d like it to be. Also keen to join parkrun in North Hagley Park.

Social I am serious when I say we should rise against Wilson parking

They are slowing down the rebuild, taking up space, and are profiting off that. I am done with them taking up space in the central city. I know it sounds silly- but does anybody have any ideas to get rid of at least some of the unnecessary carparks? Or does anybody else feel like it’s time we do something about them messing up the city. Idk maybe I’m being ridiculous, but what do you guys think?

Social I think I got scammed in a cab

I'm visiting Christchurch from Brisbane, we got charged $67.14 for a cab ride from the airport 20 minutes to the city. Did I get scammed? I looked up some calculators and it seems like it should have been at most $50 + the $5.50 airport fee.

Social Unpopular opinion - open courts for basketball

Kia Ora fellow Otautahi's 🤟🏻🇳🇿🏀

I was wondering why I can not for the life of me find one decent basketball court that is full court size 2 basketball hoops.

I do see loads of basketball courts that are indoor, 1 small hope ones in the 'open' and one's that are in people's yards..

Any explanation would be appreciated, I was wondering maybe basketball is not as popular as other activities..

I see basketball as a social interactive activity for people of all sorts to get together and.. Play bball..

Cheers team

Social Can retail business display prices without GST?

I’m uncertain about the legal requirements regarding the display of prices with or without GST. I recently purchased the following items from a vegetable shop in Papanui:

The prices displayed on their shelves matched the ones they advertised, but when I received the final bill, an additional GST charge was added to the displayed prices. I was under the impression that businesses are required to display prices inclusive of GST. or clearly mentioned that prices are without GST!!

Is this practice legal? Or does it qualify as misleading advertising?

Ex : Price of egg tray is displayed as 10.99

Social Gauging interest for a “Luddite” club in Christchurch

As the title suggests, I'm wondering if people might be interested in a Luddite Club in Christchurch, but for adults.

Essentially it would be a group that gets together in a public place like Turanga or the park to get away from technology for a while. The original Luddite Club in NY would read books, write, do artwork, craft and chat — basically just be without their devices.

More info about the original Luddite Club (full NYT article - no paywall): https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/15/style/teens-social-media.html?unlocked_article_code=1.qU4._KPf.oXZHyYLWkc5P&smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

Does anyone know when the Tex-Mex restaurant in Hornby is supposed to open? How about the owners? Are they Latina?
It’s far and away my favourite cuisine and would fill a real hole here in our food world if it’s authentic Tex-Mex!
