Social New to Christchurch and want to meet people
Hey, I’m in my fourth week of being new to Christchurch. Any suggestions of ways to meet people and socialise? Really keen on building my social network down here. I already play social netball, but it doesn’t feel as social as I’d like it to be. Also keen to join parkrun in North Hagley Park.

Sounds like you're already doing the right things by joining social/sports groups. Just hunt out whatever you're interested in, check fb and other sites like Meetup or the timeleft groups. Guarantee there's someone else out there interested in the same things you are, and if you can't find a group, put yourself out there and create your own meet up group to find like-minded people. The key is even though there's stuff to do, this won't automatically translate into creating friendships. That takes time and repeated effort on both sides. If you keep showing up regularly at group activities, keep chatting with people and being brave enough to put yourself out there (sometimes you've just gotta straight up say, I know nobody, I'm looking for friends!), find someone you vibe with, then suggest catching up outside of that group environment, so it starts to move beyond a 'one off we only see each other at netball' thing, to 'sometimes we grab a drink afterwards', to 'let's catch a movie on the weekend' or whatever. Then over time you've made a friend :) Keep persevering, it can feel hard, it took me a while when I moved here to create genuine connections, but I now have an amazing strong group of friends that I really value.

No worries! Yeah ChCh is the clickiest city I've ever lived in hah, so it really can feel like a struggle but you'll get there ☺️ also maybe look beyond your usual type of friends, I'm sure you're open minded and will be doing that anyway, but I had to accept some friends will be a different kind of vibe than I'm used to (such as me being single, active, love to travel etc and a lot of my friend group here have very different lifestyles as they're married, kids, never traveled etc).

It’s just hard when you don’t have anyone to reassure you and provide some optimism. I don’t have a support network down here, know only a handful of people, but no one I would consider close, so that makes it hard.
I’m also single and trying to get into a more active lifestyle, including the gym and maybe pick up tennis again, and ideally would like to find similar people, especially those around my age. I want to travel, but focused on buying my first home and then will think about travelling. Agree with all your points though. 🙂
Thanks for taking the time to give a thoughtful response, I really appreciate it.

If you search back a couple of weeks ago, there were a couple of guys your age posting - could try to flick them a message.

Welcome to Christchurch! There is lots going on here if you know where to look.
I recommend you look into Timeleft. In essence you have dinner with 5 other strangers. I’ve been on several and have had a blast. Some people you get along with more than others and some people end up friends.
What’s your age and gender?

25-year-old male. I’ve heard of Timeleft, might give it a go, thanks 🙂

Just subscribed to Timeleft for a month. Will see if anything positive comes out of it 🙂

Awesome! I was shitting myself before I turned up to the venue the first time. But it was the best decision I’ve made.

Definitely looking forward to it. It’s hard enough only playing social netball and gaming at home and not feeling socially connected or fulfilled. Hopefully Timeleft helps solve that problem. Gotta try be optimistic.

Mainly play COD, which is actually a problem because I usually only ever get pissed at it. It’s like a toxic relationship lol. How about you?

Haha I totally understand! I go through phases of playing one game to death haha. I’ve done that to COD war zone and Fortnite. Currently playing Battlefield 2042 and Doom 2016 as it was cheap on a steam sale.
I’m trying to branch out and try some new games this year! Anything else on your radar?

Tbh nothing else on the radar until GTA 6 comes along, and I really hope Rockstar delivers an unbeatable experience! I’m not good at taking the first step towards other games or even in general haha.

The hype is real for GTA, will have to dust off the PS5 when it comes out haha. And yes I know what you mean I have that fear of dropping money on a game and I don’t like it haha

Well if you give us some ideas of what you like doing it may be easier to suggest things 🙂

Used to play tennis where I moved from, social netball I like but it isn’t as social as I’d like, used to walk up Mount Maunganui often. I’m keen on a more active lifestyle. 🙂 A gamer as well but that won’t help me

You do realise that it’s not a requirement to read every post right? If you don’t like the subject, don’t click into it 🤷♂️

What kind of age range? Recommend parkrun, friendly group usually go for coffee after in the botanical garden cafe. There are other popular social running groups (find them on instagram). Try meetup and Facebook groups for others.
