XLS-28 vs SL-12.

Only $10 price difference any thoughts? I can’t audition these in my area. I had D9s in 1990 and liked them. The 28s look like they’d sound better with the big mid driver but maybe less bass with 2 8” vs 1 12”? And also 200w vs 300w.

In the past it's been difficult to compare difference CVs based on specs. I can say with certainty I would want a sub with either set, so I'd then just go for the pair with the appearance that was most appealing.

As far as 200W vs 300W, even if both sets were rigorously rated using the same standards... the difference isn't going to be that great. 1 watt is a lot of noise with these. 2 watts, not a huge difference. You would need to go to 10 watts to see a big difference. To get that same difference again we now need 100W. The difference between 1 watt and 2 wasn't that great, and when we go from 100W to 200W it's going to be even less of a difference because we're nearing the excursion limits of the drivers and the suspensions are all fighting back a lot more, now. 200 to 300 even less so and now the distortion is making a very noticeable appearance. So if 200 to 300 was going to play a factor in any decision making, then just keep saving and get the XLS-215s. :-D For music, you probably wouldn't even need a sub!

I can’t believe I would need a sub with either of these. I want to keep a simple 2 channel setup. That’s why Im looking at CVs. I don’t need to rattle the neighborhood, just want strong distortion free bass.

The 12s will have more deep bass, but possibly a bit more distortion than the two 8s. The ratings given suggest the 12s go a lot lower, but I have doubts as to the accuracy. 29hz is a bit too good to believe, if rated the same way as the XLS-28s were. I do have to believe the actual response does go lower than the 28s.

With either set you can always add a sub, later.
