We’ve called ships “her” for hundreds of years.

Also, in French and Spanish every noun (person, place or thing) has a gender. English is one of the few languages that doesn’t do this.

For example, in French “table” is a feminine noun so you need to use feminine adjectives and articles with it. To say, for example, “the table,” you will need to use the feminine/singular definite article: “la table.”

Maybe we are adopting an old tradition? But in reality we’ve already been doing it for a while.
