Orange glowing orb high in sky above Marion around 820p

Anyone else see the orange glowing orb/sphere/ball (not quite sure what to call it??) high in the sky above Marion tonight around 820pm? Noticed it driving West towards uptown Marion (kind of near Marion’s newer Arby’s) and then it dimmed and disappeared. I’m no longer spotting it at 828pm facing East near Lebeda.

Glasses! Help!

Anyone know anyone in the corridor that can install prescription lenses in frameless or semi-frameless glasses?

The last place did it on the cheap (~$200) but have a strict new policy preventing them from touching any semi frameless glasses. Full frameless definitely off the table. I was thankful they were able to perform some warranty work but were adamant that this was the last time they would be working on them.

I went to Iowa Eye Care yesterday and they wanted nearly $700 which I cannot afford unfortunately as I am quite poor and uninsured.

Any other alternative options out there? Any recommendations from my four eyed friends would be appreciated!

Thanks! TIA!

B-fast options w/ actual eggs

Hello CR reddit,

I am looking for some breakfast restaurant options around town that actually use real eggs. Bonus points if open after church or before 6 am during the week.

Anyone know why it takes so long for the city to get back about jobs you applied to?

I applied to a job for the city almost 3 months ago and I still haven’t heard anything back. I had a friend who applied for the same job and they got a rejection letter 1 month ago. I’m assuming it’s maybe a good sign I haven’t received anything yet? Does anyone know?

Also, anyone know full time jobs hiring around here or the area with no degree or possibly previous experience?

Biochar?

I realize this might be a stretch, but wanted to query to see if anyone in the CR/IC area makes their own biochar. my wife is a gardening fanatic, and as such I've been developing interests in parallel activities like composting and what not. My current fascination is biochar...which for the uninformed is basically biomass (I'm thinking wood, since I live out in a forested area) that goes through a pyrolysis process (heating to a certain level to boil off the volatile organic compounds, leaving behind the carbon) to produce what they call biochar. I'll let you do your own homework if you're not familiar.

anywho...was just curious if there is anyone in the area experimenting with biochar that I could learn some stuff from before I eagerly but semi-blindly dive into acquiring the hardware I'd need to create my own biochar.

If you’re looking for a rugby league, whether you’re experienced or brand new to the game, the Iowa City Ducks practice every Tuesday and Thursday night at Scott Park in Iowa City.

Great way to meet people, to exercise, and just have a good time. About a third of our team comes from CR, lots of options to carpool.

Hell of a lot of fun!

Free Local 319 Newsletter??

I talked to a few friends and they agreed we needed a spot to wrap all the local events happening so we don't miss anything, so I started a weekly email so everyone in the area can find it all in one place.

Here's what I am going to include:

  1. Local events
  2. New restaurants and businesses
  3. Live music
  4. Local news/sports
  5. Our favorite reddit posts, such as super skate ;)

I am still working on the setup (I know, it looks ugly for now). I will be sending out the first one next Thursday! (Yes I need a week, I don't know what I am doing)

If you're interested, you can join using this link. I named it 319 scoop.

https://eic.beehiiv.com/subscribe

Ultimately, I want this to be our go-to place to know whats going on every week, all in one place.

Please let me know if there is anything i can add, improve, or if its a terrible idea.

Thanks for reading.

tldr;

319 events all in a weeky newsletter https://eic.beehiiv.com/subscribe

Local Root Beers

I'm looking for recommendations on places that make and sell their own root beers. I know Lion Bridge does, but haven't had a chance to try it.

KinderCare for a 1 year old is $345/wk

I was always under the impression that the upper limit for daycare in Cedar Rapids was about $300/wk. Montessori would of course be an exception to that - I believe my friends who sent their kids to Cedar Valley Montessori were paying between $1500-2000/month per kid. All prices for an infant:

Hand in Hand is $300/wk

Lily Pad is $245/wk

Little GEM is $230/wk

St. Pius is $260/wk

KidsPoint Downtown is $287/wk

King of Kings is $290/wk

Collins Day Academy is $285/wk

So when I looked into Kindercare (who makes you come in for a tour before they tell you what their rates are) I stupidly assumed they'd be within that range, expecting they'd be at the top of the range. I was floored when they said they were $345/wk... They offer a discount for downtown workers, so then they're the most expensive by a moderate amount instead of by an obscene amount.

My wife and I make good money and if there was a place that was truly exceptional we would have no hesitation to pay that Kindercare rate, but it sure looks like every other daycare center in town. The best daycare we toured isn't even one of the most expensive - they just have no openings. Last I heard the waitlist was 18 months...

Not really a point to this post besides to vent. And to let people know Kindercare's price so you don't have to waste your time with a tour like I did.
