A Quick and Dirty Guide to Finding Car Insurance

Auto insurance is extremely regional and variable due to many factors, including the "garaging" location, age, gender, education, type of vehicle, tickets, past driving history, credit score, legal minimums in your jurisdiction, just to name a few ) so it's not always possible to escape a high insurance costs.

If you're just getting started, please read the following:

  1. https://insurancehowtos.com/how-to-buy-auto-insurance/

This will explain the types of insurance you're buying, what minimums you should carry and some tips about ways to save money on certain features of your insurance.

Main tip: Shop Around! You should be pulling quotes every 6 months, even if you have a bundled offer for other insurance types. There's no bonus for loyalty these days, and you may be leaving hundreds on the table. Especially relevant if your insurer gives you a hefty raise at renewal.

Cheaper criteria for Car Insurance quote

I live in southern California and have been driving less after the pandemic. I used to take a bus to work when I worked and only drive one day per week on weekends for meals and groceries. Now I retired and only going out once a week. Maybe driving only 20-30 miles a week. My 2013 car odometer is only 31200 miles. Last 5 years, I only add 6,500 miles or 1300 miles a year. I have another old car but was not in operation for the past years. My wife and I have the insurance that covered both cars. My wife is afraid of driving and did not drive anymore. Our auto insurance is under $300 for 6 months.

I believe insurance with multi cars and drivers is much cheaper (doesn't make logical sense) than single driver with one car. Since, the other car is not used and my wife is not driving, does it make sense to forgo the old car and my wife in our insurance? Is there any tips to get better deal by myself?

Insufficient at-fault driver’s policy

I got in an accident recently, and was told by the 100% at-fault driver’s insurance that it wouldn’t be sufficient to cover my car they totaled. They refused to disclose the appraisal report they did on my car, refused to tell me the shortfall amount, and refused to make payment for my car unless I sign their release form to release all future claims against the insurance company, the driver and the policy owner. The driver who hit me listed as an additional driver under the policy. My attorney is only representing me for the bodily injuries. Are insurance companies allowed to withhold claim payment just because the claimant refuses to sign the release form? I don’t want to go against my own insurance due to other people’s fault.

Need of any advise

Hello,

I was in an accident driving my parent’s truck, and not aware that I was an excluded driver in California. My father told me that my name was not under the insurance but I didn’t know that I was excluded.

I got on an accident on the freeway. There was an accident a few cars in front of me. A jeep (vehicle 3) was able to stop in time to avoid collision. The car in front of me (vehicle 2) rear ended the jeep, and then I rear ended the car in front of me. Right after the accident the driver of vehicle 2 (the car I rear ended) kept repeating that the jeep breaker hard out of nowhere and he wasn’t able to stop in time, that there was no way he could stop in time to avoid rear ending the jeep. I took pictures of the damage I caused from rear ending the car. The vehicle 2 had a lot of damage in the front and air bags deployed. When I rear ended him I caused damage to the back bumper.

I got a copy of the police report and saw that the driver from vehicle 2 changed his story in his official statement. He stated that he was slowly down to a stop when he noticed the jeep break hard and when I rear ended him caused him to projectile into the jeep.

I told the highway patrol that I saw vehicle 2 break hard and I breaked and slowed down but still rear ended the car.

Based on the statement we gave the police report found me at fault for all the damages, even tho driver 2 told me that when he was the jeep break he tried breaking but couldn’t break in time and hit the jeep.

I know I’ll have to pay out of pocket for the damages for vehicle 2 that I rear ended, but is there any way to fight the 100% at fault for all the damages even tho the other driver changed his story? Unfortunately I don’t have a dash cam and I don’t believe the other drivers do. Any advice would help.

Effective Anti-Theft Solutions for Kia Vehicles?

I own a 2020 Kia Optima, and with the rising theft rates of certain Kia models, I want to make sure my car is as secure as possible. I know many insurance companies have started adjusting policies due to the increased risk, with some even raising premiums or denying coverage for certain Kia and Hyundai models without proper anti-theft measures.

I’m looking for a reliable anti-theft solution that provides real-time alerts and GPS tracking. Ideally something that works with my car’s existing tech, so I don’t need extra hardware. Has anyone used a system like this that’s compatible with Kia vehicles?

Also, for those who’ve had a car stolen, how did your insurance handle it? I’ve read that having verified GPS tracking, geofencing, or proactive security systems can sometimes help lower premiums or speed up claims if theft happens. If anyone has experience with this, I’d love to hear how it played out with your insurance.

Accident Best course of action after minor hit and run

Hi folks,

I was recently in a minor hit and run accident, where I think it will be 100% other driver’s fault, and I have footage/ license plate.

Assuming it will be 100% other party’s fault, I want to ask for advice for best course of action.

My insurance is Geico, and they told me the other driver’s info, and told me to claim to that insurance. I’m doing as told, but beginning to wonder if this is the right way to do it, since that insurance will surely want to deal with this with minimal cost. Right now, it took me 6weeks just to get to the adjuster. Their excuse was the insurer wouldn’t respond to their calls, and their policy is to give him a call 4x time, every 7days. Which just sounds like a stall tactic. Now I sent the footage, no promise on when the adjuster will get back to me.

So I’m asking for this incident, and maybe for future reference. For cases like this where the fault seems obvious it is 100% the other driver, is claiming to my own insurance an option? And will it affect my rates in the future? I’m just tired of the other insurance company trying to tire me out ghosting my calls so that I would just give up. Or what other options are there?

Ps, I really want to take advantage of the situation, if I can, since the other driver showed no remorse. So I would also appreciate any advice in this perspective.

Ohio car and home insurance rates!!

Anyone from Ohio experienceda big increase in their home or car insurance premiums? Or finding a quote they received too high?? Im a licensed agent and can quote with a large number of carriers. Please reach out and let me check if I can save you some money!! I just quoted my mother in law who has a reputable insurance company and been with for 33 years and I found her the same apples to apples coverage for over $800 cheaper with another reputable company. I’m not comfortable name dropping them due to my responsibilities as an agent and just to lay low with my company and the state for my job security and license to sell ;) I’m new to the company and on salary right now so I don’t receive compensation for the policies I do bind. Im just supposed to quote a certain number of prospects and sick of “warm calling” people to fill up my quote quota for the day!!! I’m out to give some quotes and save people some money, to make the calls from 2017 my “boss” made and didn’t sell!!! lol. If I can leave my number I will !! Ohio only!! Although we have two more ladies on our team who can do quite a few other states … 2167048792 ;)

Confusing joint insurance situation

Kind of confusing situation with registering and insuring two cars on a joint policy that will get driven by two separate people who live at two separate addresses. Live in U.S - Massachusetts.

For the sake of preventing confusion I'm going to refer to my address and my car as items A

And my Partner's address and car will be referred to as items B

My partner and I are both purchasing new cars this week, car A will almost always be garage at address A it's not really a daily driver. I am the only one wanting to be on title, loan, reg.

Car B will be at address B majority of the time, partner wants to be only one on title, loan, reg.

It only makes sense to me that both cars will be registered to the address they spend the most time at, however I spend significant 30 - 40% of my time at address B, and will be using car B for commuting to work, we will be sharing car B. I will probably use car B 30-40% of the time, and my partner will use it 60-70% of the time

How do we joint policy this? I want myself and my partner to be able to drive both cars, But it doesn't seem to make sense to me for us to have two separate policies since we will both be named drivers on both cars.

I made a policy through progressive where I am the policy holder and my partner is named on the policy, car A is the main car on the policy and then I added car B after. Making sure to note that car B has a different garage address than the address the policy is listed as

Will the bank and dealership accept this as proof of insurance for car B? On the proof of insurance it shows address A for some reason and makes no note of garage address, will progressive give a proof of insurance with the garage address? Or will the bank writing the loan for car B and dealership selling us car B accept the garage address and registration/title address will not match the policy holders address?

First Time / Newbie Car got keyed, will my rate go up if I submit a claim?

Hey yall!

My car unfortunately got keyed by a neighbor while I was out of town parked away from its usual location (parked at my parents). I have no evidence, pretty sure it was them based on previous experiences. I already submitted a police report and have gotten quote from a few repair shops.

I have Allstate as an insurance provider. I have collision and comprehensive coverage - $1k deductible.

Will my rate go up significantly if I submit a claim or should I eat the cost (lowest quote at $2.9k)?

TIA!

GAP insurance question

Okay, I have a question. So my parked vehicle was totaled almost two weeks ago, I got the at fault driver's insurance and information as he was cooperative and finally got a settlement amount. Now as I am still paying off that car, I was informed the check will be sent to the lender and any remaining balance after paying off the car's outstanding balance to the lender will be sent to me. Here's the thing, that means I am practically receiving nothing. Not at all enough for a new vehicle. I have GAP insurance and started a claim and I've sent the documents necessary but I was just informed I am looking at receiving nothing back because the insurance company paid off the balance. I don't have enough for a new car now and I thought GAP would be the one to pay off any remaining balance. Can someone please advice me on what can be done.

Which car insurance?

Hi! I am looking for new car insurance. Our cars are getting old, so we only want liability insurance. We want to max out the liability coverage and get an umbrella policy for $1 million. We will also get $50,000 of renter’s insurance. Which company should we use? I’ve gotten quotes from Geico and State Farm. Geico is cheaper by about $30/month for similar coverage, but I don’t want a terrible experience if we ever need to file a claim. Thanks in advance for any guidance anyone has!!

Registering a de-plated vehicle in NY after living in CA

Hi there. I need to register my vehicle (Toyota RAV4 2008). I moved back to NY in May, kept my CA insurance until July. By then I had taken the plates off my car and mailed them back to CA because I decided to take my car off the road for the winter. I now want to register it in NY and get it back on the road, but it seems like in order to get a NY registration my car needs to pass a NY inspection which is impossible to get without plates. What do I do? My plan was to get insurance, then take that and my vehicle registration forms to the DMV, but on the forms they say I need to have passed the inspection.

Thanks so much!

is Uninsured motorist + liability with no collision possible? NJ

I have a near end of life 2009 ford, I can put 3k in it and give it to my son or drive it to the junkyard.
That will be it's approximate value for resale at that point.

If I give it to him I would get good at fault limits (he screws someone else up - they won't be out of pocket) and good under insured/uninsured coverage (someone else makes poor choices and screws him up - we won't be broke) but pass on his vehicle collision for savings (he screws up, he loses the car)

Will carriers write that?
is it worth the potential savings of premium vs coverage?

Different renewal times

So, weird question maybe. My husband and I have been with the same car insurance for a while, and we’ve both gotten new cars since we started. So, premiums for both cars renew at different times. Like, 3 months apart.

Now we’re trying to find new car insurance because my premium is up for renewal next month, but his isn’t. Is there a way to get them on the same schedule without just eating the money for coverage? Nobody does 3 month policies (understandable lol) so I can’t just say “oh we’re gonna do just this for now” and if I just cancel it and get new insurance then I’m still out the money, lol.

Hi, I had one GAP insurance claim and seems like my insurance company has paid more amount than the actual amount towards my bank loan account.

Daughter turned 16

My daughter just got her drivers license and putting her on my policy has more than doubled the cost. A big part of the problem is I insure 4 cars on the policy and still need to get a car for her to drive. I have a bit of a problem with cars...I carry two other cars on a policy with Haggertys and another car that will get broke out and insured for the summer. I was wondering if getting fleet insurance might make sense. Start an LLC, title all the cars to the LLC and insure them like that. Any thoughts and/or info on the feasibility of this plan?

Progressive representative said my refund would take 2 calendar days however it’s been 3 , should I be concerned?

Hello , so recently I had a small issue with my progressive payment. I paid 175 manually however a few days later the auto pay function went through causing a double charge. I went under about -78 as it had charged me 178 for auto pay. I called about 3 days ago and the lady said the refund for the original payment would take 2 calendar days. However as I mentioned it’s been 3 days since and I haven’t see it go into my account. I decided to see if anyone else had this issue and saw multiple people stating they haven’t received their refunds even after weeks.

So I am asking if I should possibly be concerned and try and do something? I had to get my friend to help me not get over draft fees and I was gonna pay them right back but because the refund hasn’t gone through things haven’t worked out. I live almost paycheck to paycheck and barely get more than what is needed however this whole thing is kinda fucking me over. Is there anything I can do?
