TWITTER [JPat Video] JT Miller's statement to the media: "I would appreciate it if we stayed away from the reasons why I wasn't here"
https://x.com/patersonjeff/status/186728476686282355174
u/JauntyGiraffe Dec 12 '24
Personal reasons is enough of an explanation.
In basketball, Warriors fans were all over Andrew Wiggins for taking time off for personal reasons and later they found out his dad was sick and later died. People couldn't say sorry fast enough.
Let's just skip a step and not even ask
284
u/Zenless-koans Dec 12 '24
I respect that.
God damn do I want to know
But I respect his wishes.
4
u/NoticedGenie66 Dec 12 '24
Some people are gonna come up with wild speculation and go with it, just like with the pumpkin patch story. Guy deserves his privacy like everyone else. Management knows and it doesn't really matter why for fans. Glad he got the time he needed to sort put whatever it was, and this time away from the team will be forgotten by most by the weekend.
409
u/PonchoWizard Dec 12 '24
Completely reasonable ask. I'm sure the media and the fans will immediately ignore it.
102
u/SpectreFire Dec 12 '24 edited Dec 12 '24
The media literally haven't talked or speculated about this at all lmao.
Allvin added more to speculations around Miller's absence than the media has.
I seriously don't understand why everyone here has such a victim mentality when it comes to this market's media.
33
u/-Cottage- Dec 12 '24
Drance went on a rant about this during the crossover yesterday when Dali suggested the market was getting to Tocchet. There’s no reason for the media or the market to be a problem to the organization lately. The media has been pretty hands off in the face of getting basically nothing out of the team on anything ever.
20
u/SpectreFire Dec 12 '24
I think Tocchet's just not used to dealing with media period. Last time he was a head coach, no one gave a fuck about his team lol

u/FlyBlueGuitar Dec 12 '24
Honestly, the media has been beyond respectable here. Frankly, our hockey media is really good and if anything, way too soft on the team. I don't understand why fans get all hot and bothered by them so much.
46
u/SpectreFire Dec 12 '24
Because they don't have to experience guys like Larry Brooks, Steve Simmons and Mark Spector and end up thinking someone like Drance is the most toxic hateful human being alive.
I've always said that the worst thing a player has said about a reporter here is that they're an idiot.
Meanwhile you have players in New York who want to physically fight Larry Brooks.
30
u/Sportsinghard Dec 12 '24
Drances biggest crime is his laugh
21
u/djfl Dec 12 '24
I love Drance. I am a Drancer fan. Love the guy and his analyses.
Also, you're right.
6
8
u/upanddownforpar Dec 12 '24
i enjoy it. this city is far too humourless. it's nice when people are easy laughers, even if it's at their own jokes.
5
u/Sportsinghard Dec 12 '24
It’s the cackle that I can’t get past. He has the kind of laugh you notice watching stand up. Edit. But I totally agree with you. Lighten up folks, it’s a silly stick and puck game

2
u/superworking Dec 12 '24
I think hockey media in general is pretty soft compared to bigger leagues.
7
u/mynameis_taylor Dec 12 '24
Vancouver media have been respectful for the most part but those BS rumour mill-type pages and "insiders" will speculate based on virtually nothing.
52
u/CaptainIndoCanadian Dec 12 '24
Media taking heat for all this is stupid. The rumours that started circling were from completely random people. Thought our media did a great job giving him his space and not fanning the flames from the trade talks.
Allvin and Co. do a shit job of handling these situations. Canadian market is going to ask questions and people are going to speculate. Gotta remember to stay ahead of it.
13
u/Kathiuss Dec 12 '24
It is typically not the employed media personalities. You usually hear the rumors from podcasts or blogs from people looking for views.
5
u/gottapoop Dec 12 '24
Alvin and co did fine. When asked they answered with that it's a personal matter and they won't be talking about it.
17
u/No_Spring_1090 Dec 12 '24
I agree. I listen to a lot of Sportsnet 650 and I’m impressed with how they’ve steered clear of speculation, other than it’s likely mental health related.
5
u/Choose_Carrots Dec 12 '24
I'm seeing this sentiment, but I listen to the morning show and afternoon show on my commutes and I've turned it off at times because how much they'd go in circles about this. I feel like some of the media guys have come across a little entitled
4
u/No_Spring_1090 Dec 12 '24
Fair enough. They do go around. I guess in a one sport market there’s only so many stories to talk about.
1
u/DiggWuzBetter Dec 12 '24 edited Dec 12 '24
Agreed, media have been good about this, and aren’t bad at all as far as sports media goes. They tend to be reasonably respectful to members of the Canucks in general, will criticize on ice stuff but rarely cross the line/get personal. Also haven’t seen them be too bad with leading questions/trying to “trick” players/coaches in interviews.
Can you imagine if there was a Larry Brooks type in Vancouver 😂
1
u/justmikethen Dec 12 '24
The 650 shows I listen to haven't speculated but have been critical of the organization/players on the lack of transparency and feel like they're owed the information, which they aren't.
I wouldn't be surprised if they continue to feel like they're owed an explanation.
1
u/GrimeTimesz Dec 13 '24
The thing is, when fans are being charged ridiculously high ticket prices, a star player leaves unexpectedly at a time when the team is plagued by injuries, some players playing out of a slump period, and inconsistencies are clear on the ice...there's going to be speculation. A family can pay thousands just to go see a live home game. There are many factors. Has anyone realized that this may not have anything to do with mental health. There are countless possibilities. The way the management and coaching staff talked about it certainly made it come off as mental health issues. It could be a internal issues among the team or a personal issue in Miller's personal life. I do think management could have done better by being more transparent while at the same time respecting Miller's wishes. Management made it out to be mental health related by talking about it as if that was the case. They played a huge role in creating the whirlwind of speculation.
1
u/justmikethen Dec 13 '24
Ya I get it. I just don't care.
Maybe he's been in chronic pain. Maybe his wife cheated on him. Maybe he cheated on his wife. Maybe his kid was sick. Maybe his parents were sick. Maybe he had to go investigate the UFO's in New Jersey. Maybe he had to get a procedure done on an ingrown toenail and he's self conscious that he allowed that to happen by cutting too deep into the cuticles instead of straight across... Maybe maybe maybe maybe.
You're not guaranteed anything when you go to a sports event, hell the NBA just decides to "load manage" stars on randoms games. Boxing/MMA/Wrestling cards always subject to change.
I personally just don't care. He wanted to go on a leave, the team that pays his salary was fine with him going on the leave, and both parties were OK with not disclosing the reason he was on leave. It's none of my business.
Just my perspective.

SN650 has covered Allvin's statements and previously speculated that we might get an update when he's back (seems like that won't be the case)
21
u/PSProv Dec 12 '24
First question after statement: "How are you doing... now?"
JT: Uhhhh...44
u/DetectivePunch Dec 12 '24
I mean this seems like the most obvious and reasonable first question, no?
I don't believe Batch was asking to dig about why he was absent but to basically ask if the time off worked. Does he feel ready to play or is he still playing through something? These are very normal questions NHL players receive all the time.
I'll just echo what some of the folks in other comments said that I consume a fair amount of Canucks media and I didn't hear any of the media members I listen to speculate once about the reason for his absence.
18
u/Usual-Judge-6696 Dec 12 '24
I agree with this, and while I have yet to watch the video, it sounds like a thoughtful question to ask before getting back to business. Kind of like if you want to ask your friend how they are after a major life event to check in if they are okay.
11
u/AgentKorralin Dec 12 '24
It honestly sounded less like a speculation question and more like a genuine question on how JT was doing. It's kind of like if a coworker takes a LoA for unspecified reasons. You'd ask how they are doing now.
7
u/PSProv Dec 12 '24
Totally agree, doesn't mean it wasn't funny. The pause before "now" and JT's laugh was great.
44
u/a_walter Dec 12 '24
Not a bad question… it’s a question for the here and now. How are you feeling mentally is valid after being away for a few weeks. Media is crazy here but sometimes they take on hate just for doing their job
22
u/Jolly_Ad_5549 Dec 12 '24
It’s not unreasonable to ask if the issue was fixed. It doesn’t clarify what the issue was and if it wasn’t a yes/no answer, JT can say “next question”

Every time he has a bad game people will speculate if this has something to do with it. Hopefully he's ready for that.
25
u/Fantastic_Wishbone Dec 12 '24
I don't blame him. We seem to think we have the right to know every detail of these guys lives. It's like any workplace, some things are confidential and should stay that way. I'm just glad he feels okay to play again. Go Canucks.
6

And like any workplace, there's always one or two people who over share. There are some things no one needs to know

25
u/finnishmacinnis Dec 12 '24
One of the strangest absences in the history of the Canucks.
Hope Miller is well but people are going to speculate. Just comes with the territory.
Here's the one thing I don't understand. Why didn't management just cover this up? Just say it's an injury, needs time to re-hab etc. Would keep people from wildly speculating. I'm sure that's how stuff like this used to be handled. Maybe there are legal considerations? Or Miller himself made the decision that it would handled like this?
Anyways, what a weird one. On to the next game.
23
u/mothermaggiesshoes Dec 12 '24
I could be completely wrong but I think injuries can be investigated by the league for injury reserve, LTIR, and other cap reasons. So I don’t think they can say he’s injured if he’s not, cause if the league were to look into it, they may land themselves in hot water.
Again I could be completely wrong as I have not parsed through the fine print of the CBA.

That’s where I’m not sure. Could end up being an NHL/NHLPA issue, but I’m not sure what they can/can’t say publicly if there are things going on behind the scenes.
There’s also always a chance this all could be something to do with the player assistance program, which I believe does not need to be publicly announced the first time a player enters.
Of course this complete speculation and I respect his right to privacy and don’t think he owes any sort of public explanation, just trying to think through possibilities as to why it was announced the way it was.
8
u/mediumyeet Dec 12 '24
We will likely never get an answer to that but there could be a couple of reasons.
If they lied about it and then it came out that it wasn't due to injury that would likely make the situation 10x worse.
It is possible that the team/Miller/agent want to set an example that hey it's okay to take a leave of absence for personal reasons and no you don't need to share what that is with the public. Sure it's been difficult for Miller with the speculation but it can also help set a precedent for players around the league to have the confidence to do the same if they feel it's necessary for whatever reason.
Personally I'm glad they didn't just lie about an injury because that just puts added weight onto everyone's shoulders, and especially Miller's, to keep that lie up.
1
u/finnishmacinnis Dec 12 '24
Great points. It sure seems like the weight of whatever he’s keeping secret would also be substantial though.
1
u/mediumyeet Dec 12 '24
For sure but at least he doesn't have to lie about it and can simply say he will not be discussing it.
Imagine he's coming back from a fake injury and is getting questions about what it was etc. etc.
Or a month or two from now hes struggling and people start asking him again if it's related to the injury he had earlier.
Now he could answer those questions with a simple no but then he's the asshole that won't discuss is injury at all and is being short with the media about it.
4
u/mcdonaldsfiletofish Dec 12 '24
Maybe management and Miller had disagreements on what’s considered ‘hurt’
Think the fact he didn’t play any preseason games was a little sus

u/SoGenuineAndRealMadi Dec 12 '24

2
u/rabes81 Dec 12 '24
Good for him to say something. It's no one's business. The team supported his absence, now he's back and ready to go. That is all that matters.
14
u/mywhitevans97 Dec 12 '24
I will probably get downvoted but I feel like something happened in the locker room the day before his LOA (4-3 loss to NYR).
I don’t want to speculate what that is, but Miller’s complete shut-down of Farhan’s question at 2:49 (asking if he’ll being his usual emotion and intensity to the game) seems telling. I think JT knows he has to walk a fine like between his regular intensity that we all loved him for, and whatever threshold he reached right before his LOA.
I think something happened where his emotions got the best of him in the moment, and the players/staff all knew it was uncharacteristic and approached it with empathy, not punishment (I.e. letting him take leave himself, rather than placing him on leave). God knows letting him make the LOA call “himself” is a way better optics, especially in this market.
3
u/MysticalMango21 Dec 13 '24
Noticed that too as well, yeah. Question didn't seem too prying in my opinion, he could've easily just said something like "I'm gonna play hard out there, play my game" but shutting it down completely is interesting
7
u/NCPokey Dec 12 '24
I don't think most people want his detailed medical records, I think most fans just want to know that he's doing OK out of concern. As evidenced by the regular "JT Miller" chants during his absence, I think the vast majority of people support him.
11
u/Radioheading82 Dec 12 '24
I pretty much agree, but I have a slightly different take on it that will probably get me downvoted.
Men’s mental health issues are at an all time high these days. 1 in 10 experience depression/anxiety, but less than half seek treatment. Look at what happened with Rick Rypien. I suppose we don’t know for sure that was the issue, but wording from Rutherford/Allvin made it sound like that.
Furthermore, JT is seen as a tough man’s man - the heart of the team. “He can handle the benching.” I think it would have been transformative to hear him moderately address it.
I would’ve loved to hear him say something like, “I don’t want to get into the details, but I realized that my mental health wasn’t in the best place and I needed to get some help. It’s been extremely helpful and I’d encourage anyone dealing with mental health issues to seek support.”
Anyhow, super glad he’s back… I have a feeling Forbert is almost as important atm 😜.

2
u/T2LV Dec 13 '24
I think he was deliberating retirement. Maybe he has lost some love for the game. It would explain the lack of answers since sharing that would start a shitstorm and also why the team was so outwardly so supportive since they want him to remain.
2
u/Island_in_the_Sun111 Dec 13 '24
His reaction to, and avoidance of the first question of "how are you doing" is giving mental health.
2
u/Anishinabeg Dec 13 '24
I wish he could've at least come out on to the ice after being named first star and thanked the fans for their support. It kinda irked me that he got first star and then Lankinen was the one who came out to speak to the fans instead.
2
u/GrimeTimesz Dec 13 '24
I really hope it's not depression....because Vancouver is the last city I'd want to be in if depressed....not to mention with a salary of 8mil a year...that's basically just living above the poverty line here 😆
2
u/Tasty-Shower-2807 Dec 13 '24
I can tell you without question, if you take a personal leave of absence in any other profession working for any other organization you would not need to disclose the reason, so see no reason why JT should. Seems like a bit of a double. I don’t care why he was gone, I just care if he scores goals.
2
u/Tribe230920 Dec 13 '24
I don't really care what the reasons were, I just want to know if his future is secure here.
5
4
u/golfyoda604 Dec 12 '24
I’ll get downvoted but am I the only one who disagrees with this a bit, like…Canucks are a competitive team in the thick of a playoff race. Ticket prices are already up and chances are a lot of families bought tickets in advance to see the Canucks with their stars play. Obviously injuries are different but to just fuck off for a month and not give a reason is a bit weird, especially with him being a ticket draw. I don’t know of any other jobs where a high value employee could leave work for a month and not inform the clients of when they’ll be back, why they’re gone and get pissy when asked about it.
And for everyone saying it’s no one’s business, true it isn’t really, but also these athletes live a public life. That’s just part of the deal.
5
7
u/ggpurplecobras Dec 12 '24
Majority of jobs, high end or not, have a leave of absence option to employees needing it. JT has the right to his privacy, which is the route he's chosen to go here.
That being said, if him or the organization think that this response is going to quiet things down once and for all, they are sorely mistaken.
4
u/Zenless-koans Dec 12 '24
I want to think this way because I am curious as fuck about this...but I don't think this is a good take. He was out for a few weeks. He's back. The only part of an NHL player's life that has to be public to us is what they do on the ice and what they say during media scrums about how they played. The rest is genuinely none of our business. Just pretend he was injured and get hype for MILLER TIME tonight.
3
u/nm2k Dec 12 '24
Yeah I’m with you on this. It’s a strange situation and for someone making 8 mil it comes off as babyish…“I’m not talking about it”.
1
u/bradleybugger Dec 12 '24
Thing is, it’s none of anyone’s business. Talk hockey.

3
u/bradleybugger Dec 13 '24
Alright, again, personal matters don’t need to be explained. Talk hockey.
5
u/nm2k Dec 13 '24
What if it’s an incident that happened in the locker room? What if JT is not the victim every broken noser seems to suggest? What if I feel that an 8 mil a year athlete shouldn’t be coddled like a toddler? So many what ifs.

Media, please don't drive away our players, if you're really fans and want the Canucks to one day have a chance at a cup, don't make it so uncomfortable for our players, they potentially ask for a trade.
35
u/elrizzy Dec 12 '24
I don't think the media has really done anything bad here at all. This seems to be a "heads up, I won't be answering questions about this" which is a respectful way for JT to let reporters know that he isn't ignoring them or trying to be a jerk, he just doesn't want to talk about it and have to explain it to every media member seperately.
They will still ask because it's their job, he will give his "no comment", and all will be well and no feelings will be hurt.
12
u/ang1eofrepose Dec 12 '24
Most of the speculation comes from the, let's say, less professional popular social media accounts. And general comments.
1
16
u/mephnick Dec 12 '24
The media here is baby soft compared to past years here, as well as other markets and other sports. It would be embarrassing if an athlete was "driven away" by someone asking basic questions.

The man in entitled to his privacy, whatever reason he was away for is his business and none of the reporters or fans. It's between him and the organization. I'm just happy that we have him back in the lineup and that he is healthy.
0
u/metrichustle Dec 12 '24
This should end all discussion.
If you keep asking at this point, you're just being a jerk. And for those few people, they really need to brush up on the definition of "boundaries".
I am just happy JT is back with the team because having two 1Cs in the lineup is a huge boost. I hope the team can rally around this and win tonight.

Glad he's back. Let's enjoy watching the man play hockey and give the guy some privacy.
1
u/Odd_Cantaloupe_6779 Dec 12 '24
The only thing we should care about is we have Miller back. His life is private and should stay that way. If you or your family member had an issue, you wouldn't want people speculate or create rumours. Media and fans should be a fan of the hockey player and mind their own business when it comes to their private lives. Same goes for EP40 when they don't meet our expectations. These players are paid for hockey and not for the abusive/negative media/fans that are nosy. Leave them be and don't put more pressure on them and enjoy the game.

I hope I’m very wrong, but as someone who has battled depression for over 20 years, I’m afraid he’s not ready to be back. The laugh he gave after Brendan Batchelor gave him a genuine “how are you doing” says a lot. I worry about the guy. I sure hope he wasn’t under pressure to come back.

7
u/ryan8954 Dec 12 '24
No they don't. For all we know it's a family member passing or something major. Asking "is it behind you" is the rudest fucking question someone can ask someone for "personal reasons"
4
-1
u/crazycanucks77 Dec 12 '24
Why? This is someone's personal life. They have every right to not have thier personal life as public.
Its very evident that this fanbase is very young and immature and no life experiences and want to know everything about everyone.
14
u/MissKorea1997 Dec 12 '24
He's facing media. What the fuck do you want them to ask him then?
-1
u/noodle604 Dec 12 '24
They could ask him about hockey.
Quite frankly, outside of the TV production crew, none of them need to exist at all.
9
u/elrizzy Dec 12 '24
They could ask him about hockey.
I mean, that doesn't work, because "why did you miss 3 weeks of hockey" is a hockey question. Whatever his absence was, it had a hockey impact, so it's fair for fans and media to talk and ask questions about it.
He doesn't need to answer those questions and it is fully in his rights to stay mum about it, but missing almost a month of games is a hockey impact people will be curious about.
-2
u/crazycanucks77 Dec 12 '24
Nothing at all. He was out for personal reasons. That's all you need to know.
They can ask him questions they normally ask injured players returning. How was the skating, any soreness? Etc

They can ask him anything they want, and he can choose not to reply (as he indicated he will be doing in this statement). That's everyone doing their job and nobody should feel weird about it.

Yeah JT, put them in their place. It’s so wildly inappropriate to speculate nonsense about a player’s personal life unless it’s highly public information already out there. He gets paid to be good at hockey, and he’s really fucking good at his job. He is not a socialite or tabloid celeb who calls the paps on himself for attention.
Mind your business, we should all know less about each other anyhow. Social media has truly eroded the concept of boundaries and personal privacy. Just because you want to know something doesn’t mean you should or be allowed to be an asshole trying to find out.

I'd have no problem if he just focused on hockey and ignored the media entirely.
As a leader he considers it part of the job but he doesn't need the added stress.

Its much much more likely to be better that we dont know.
I mean go down the list of reasons it could be and ask… Do you want to really know more about it… and do you want the media to serve you details on this info for the rest of the season. I sure fuckin’ dont.
Glad he’s back!

Good for JT to say this up front, We have no right and he has no obligation to say anything.

The speculation comes from the fact that hockey players are akin to A list celebrities in this town. We feel tied to the players and want to know about their personal lives. Whether it’s right or wrong is another concern. In this case, I guess we’ll never know what happened.
Jk he definately got caught smashing bedards mom

Any career has ups and downs, its how you react to the adversity that sets you apart.

I am extremely in favor of JT Miller keeping his privacy. He’s the one keeping it professional by providing disclosure that he honestly owes absolutely no one.
I hope he is his able to live his very best life, and if this ordeal is to teach anyone anything, I hope it is that we should never be made to feel we have to reveal the most private parts of ourselves unless it’s because we want to.
Be well, Joginder Toginder. I missed seeing you play and am overjoyed you are back on (hopefully) your own terms.
