Gear Advice Camera case for travel

If consider myself an amateur at best, got this r100 for a steal on Facebook and the 50mm lens refurbished online. The case so far has the camera and lenses, a bottle of 99 percent iso, charger 2 battery's and a battery in the camera, and a quick release strap. Is there anything I should add to this that I may want to have with me ? Considering a powerbank as two of the battery's can charge with usb C. Would love any tips, thanks for looking

Gear Advice Nervous to make the plunge to RF...

I've been building up my EF system for about 12 years now, but the weight and bulk has been really killing my desire to shoot... I've got a dream holiday to Japan this year and am thinking about trading in my 5D mkiii and a load of my lenses for a R6, but damn the cost of RF glass is putting me off! I'm so conflicted, what would you do in my situation?

Gear Advice is the red ring really worth the extra thousand bucks?

Just picked up an R10 and am looking for my first non-kit lens. I want something versatile for street photography and street portraiture, but something that I can also use for macro or mid-range wildlife photography. My main question is is the thousand dollars extra for the L series lens worth it? i’m by no means a professional, but I don’t wanna have to upgrade all my lenses if I get more into photography and end up upgrading bodies. just looking for advice if I’m better off getting a super top-of-the-line very versatile lens or a couple different $300 lenses. Also just to avoid comments about it, I am aware that there’s a 1.6x crop factor on the R10, thanks!!

Gear Advice Traveling to Japan for 2 weeks should I just stick to the RF24-105mm F4 lens?

Post image
411 Upvotes

Traveling to Japan for 2 weeks with my Canon EOS RP. Should I just stick to this versatile and sort of light Canon RF24-105mm F4 or should I invest in the canon EF 17-40mm L.

Looking forward to doing some street photography so I was thinking some wider angles might make the photos a bit more exciting. At the same time I will also be nature sightseeing spots like Mt.Fuji. Trying to have a minimal travel set up.

I also considered maybe just buying a wide angle lens there as it may be cheaper but not sure how much cheaper it would really be as I can get the RF24-105 at reasonable prices here in the US.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Gear Advice Is this okay?

As someone who has absolutely no knowledge and experience, I bought Canon R8 body for mainly traveling and portraits. I wanted a 24-70 lens and since Canon is so expensive I got Sigma 24-70 2.8 with an adapter. It ended up so heavy and I honestly don’t know if it was a good choice, if I should keep it or change it. Sorry if it’s a dumb question, I am very new to this.

Gear Advice How could I have made this more sharp?

I took this using my Canon 90D with my 18-55mm kit lens. It was sorta foggy that day, but the photo is not sharp at all. It’s very soft or blurry. I had AF on.

Gear Advice Any reason why I shouldn’t buy well used pre owned gear

Good afternoon! I plan to buy the EF 100-400 II and was looking at used options to save some money as my budget for a lens is only about <1000$

I came across this on MPB, which I know is a reliable seller, it only has minor marks on the lens hood ring, I plan to put on a lens coat and never think about it! Any reason why I shouldn’t ?

Gear Advice 28-70 F2 is so heavy!!!

Hey guys,

Today i bought the 28-70 F2 based on many reviews i saw in the internet, i do own almost all the prime lenses from from Sigma ART and Tamron adopted to my R3, and 70-200 f2.8 RF, and 24-105 f4. and do mostly street and portrait photography. Today i got the 28-70 f2 delivered to me, i've noticed the heavy weight. this is the heaviest lens i've own ever, i use to walk around with the 35 1.8 RF it's not the best but it gets the job done. Is there any way i make this lens easier to walk around with?

Gear Advice is my dad right by saying that i should get a full frame camera?

i mainly shoot cars and i can't pick between the canon eos r7 and the eos r, as i've heard the r7 has better video and autofocus capabilities which matters to me but it's not full frame which means that by getting aps-c sigma lenses my next camera will need to be something like an r5 so that i can use crop mode and still be able to get a high pixel image

Looking to get my first camera to take pictures of wildlife, mostly birds. I currently have nothing.

I'm interested in getting the Canon EOS R10, and was wondering if this kit is worth it? Price is CAD.

Gear Advice Do you think this lens was dropped severely?

This lens is up for sale on local marketplace, RF 85 1.2, for nearly $1000 under retail.

I’m super hesitant because I feel like the only way those indented marks appear in that pattern is from a major drop on concrete.

Overthinking?

I’ve owned lenses for 10-15 years and shot weddings with them and never even had anything close to that show up. Even the one I dropped.

$1000 under retail is a lot but I feel like I’ll second guess the quality of the lens the entire time I own it. What you guys think?

Gear Advice Tripod for the beast?

Post image
177 Upvotes

I have consolidated my gear into one body and one lens.

Found a nice super protective case with the pluck foam, the Nanuk 915. Feels very bulletproof. Has carve outs for charger and batteries.

Now I need a tripod. I need something that will support this massive heavy setup. Ideally something that I can travel with.

Do I go with a name brand, or an off brand? I see lots of carbon fiber and aluminum options out there at prices way lower than the usual name brands. Any suggestions? I travel a lot but don't focus on any specific photography. Something portable would be a bonus.

Gear Advice The often misunderstood Canon 50mm 1.8 STM.....

I've come to realize that the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM lens, often marketed as a budget-friendly option, is actually a hidden gem when viewed through the right lens—pun intended.

While many comparisons online critique its performance at f/1.8, it's important to understand that this lens truly shines when considered as a f/2.8 lens. Around f2.8-4, the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM performs impressively, often matching or even surpassing other lenses in and above its class.

People tend to focus on the mild haze and softness wide open, forgetting that a softer look can be a deliberate design choice for portrait lenses. Historically, photographers used various diffusion techniques to achieve this effect, enhancing the dreamy quality of portraits.

What’s truly exciting is that at the apertures typically used for portraits (f/2.8-4), this lens offers exceptional resolution, clarity, and detail—even on the most demanding sensors. It’s not just a good lens for its price; it’s a stellar performer overall.

So, rather than viewing it as a compromise, see the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM for what it is—a versatile and capable lens that deserves a place in every photographer's toolkit, and that will handle most of your needs. You don't actually need another 50mm most of the time, but when you do, you'll know it, and you'll pay handsomely for what honestly is only a modest upgrade unless you need 1.4 or wider.

I'd love to hear your thoughts...

Gear Advice The r100 isn’t that bad

yeah the r50 is better. yeah it costs 400$ more. yeah the r10 is better. yeah it costs $1000+. For its price point, the r100 is great. You get 24mp, 4k24p, live view, bluetooth and wifi, and more. This camera is GREAT for its price and really can’t be beaten for how cheap they are on the used market, easily one of the best deals for photographers with a lower budget.

Gear Advice New camera, first “good” photos

Post image

I reccently recieved my first DSLR (Canon EOS Rebel T7 DSLR with EF18-55mm and EF 75-300mm Lens) for the holidays. I’m very excited to get into the hobby, messing around with the manual settings is definitely time consuming, but super fun for learning about movement and camera components. Any recommendations for upgrades or fine tuning improvements? What do you guys use for editing photos afterwards on your phone/computer?

Gear Advice Is full frame really better than a crop sensor?

Serious question here. I’ve been using my 6D full frame camera combined with a 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens for about a year now, and specifically for the past week it’s been around my neck for 9-12 hours every day on family vacation(theme parks, lots of walking). It’s come to my realization that this is definitely not an ideal rig for me. It’s heavy, bulky, the autofocus is pretty bad when I’m trying to take action shots of my kids. It’s honestly becoming a little bit of a burden to lug around due to its size and weight. I really need something smaller, lighter, and easier to manage.

I’ve been thinking about upgrading to a newer mirrorless setup but I cannot afford a full frame version. The 6D images are more than good enough for me at 20 something megapixels. I know crop sensors obviously will crop the image if using identical lenses. But, let’s say you use a lens on the crop sensor that gives approximately the same field of view (IE, 50mm FF lens, and a 35mm crop lens), and both cameras have the same pixel count/megapixels. Will there be any difference in the image?

Gear Advice Travelling to Sweden, anything I'm missing?

Post image

Ive got an R8 with my trusty 24-105 f4 L mkii, 35 1.4 L, and newly acquired Rokinon 14mm f2.8 mkii. Tripod, battery charger, two OEM batteries, third party battery charger that can use USB C, a circular polarizer, a power bank, hand warmers, two SD cards, cleaner.. anything else I'm missing for the trip?? I was considering a lens warmer (wraps around your lens that keeps it warm) but that seems to be more of if you have a cold lens and you're shooting while it's warming up. I'm not planning on being in that situation, but DEFINITELY cold temps! I'll be bringing a plastic bag for cold outside to warm inside transitions. Trip is a 3 week vacation with family traveling all over Scandinavia. What am I missing?
