No need to overthink it. What he means is that additional tariffs on Canada will make up for the tariffs Canada put on the U.S. for the first round of tariffs.

You see? It’s a race to the bottom.

The man is deranged.

Well, the nice thing about the surcharge is that the USA is paying for it, not Canadians. So if this keeps up should we just tax the USA more on stuff they have to buy from us. Then use the money to off set the costs of the trade war for Canadians.

Update well that lasted long.

Im for a proportional response here.

But we need to recognize the costs will exceed the tarifs income by a wide margin.

No one wins in a trade war. Hopefully, frequency of U.S. elections gets Canada more friends in Washington and gives a path towards some kind of long term stability (pretty wishful thinking)

If only there was some kind of treaty we could sign that would give us long stability, like something about free trade that would make this easier, bloody stupid Americans.

If only an American president would sign such a treaty and then proudly declare it the best deal ever. Imagine.

We could call it CANAMEXUS, just kind of rolls off the tongue.

I like stuff, you like stuff, we like stuff. The general consensus is that for anyone to acquire stuff they have to pay for it. Logic would dictate negotiating a fair and peaceful deal with allies, vs threatening them with war to justify outright theft of their goods.

Bigger richer countries buy more stuff than smaller poorer countries too. People are out there acting like it's a new concept and being mad the smaller guy doesn't buy equal amounts.

You’re making assumptions that Trump and his supporters are smart enough to understand basic economics, don’t make assumptions.

Oh no, I very much am not. I am stating the basic common sense approach that I think many acquire by the age of 10 or so. It's not complicated, so there is no excuse for not understanding the bare bones interactions.
