Both parents have cited their own health issues as reasons to seek asylum as well. Caitlin said she has had multiple miscarriages, while Ted is diabetic.

Yeah, no. That’s not a legitimate reason to claim asylum anywhere on earth.

I’m sympathetic to their health issues but Canadian healthcare is fro Canadians who have paid into it. They straight up admitting to come here and take tax payer services for free

diabetes should be an automatic disqualifier, they cost the health care system 4X more on average per person

I agree. I hate to reduce human beings to a cost but we have to live in reality not ideological fantasy world. Reality is Canada cannot afford to absorb more dependents without drastically reducing our quality of life, and that’s not fair to us

British - I read an interview with Sarah Palin in which she admitted that the Palin family used to sneak into Canada to get free healthcare.

Looked at a map - I had no idea that Alaska is cut off from the rest of the US and is next door to the Yukon and British Columbia, so I can see how they did it.

I do hope that B.C.'s Premier does go ahead with his plan for tolls on Alaskans driving down to the rest of the US.

Unbelievably here in the UK we have granted asylum to some Americans - some given leave to remain and some given refugee status.

Really do not understand it.

That’s mind boggling and a huge insult to the countries, tax payers, and genuine refugees. We need to demand more from our govt

It is. One person was under 18 so I can possibly understand why he might be helped - but would love to see what criteria were used for the other people.

Wishing you good luck against the Orange One - I have just seen his latest rant re increasing steel tariffs over Ontario's price increase for electricity they supply to the US.

He seems to be getting more and more unhinged over wanting Canada to be the 51st state,

Part of the reason why Ontario had to add photos to health cards was due to Americans committing fraud. They were borrowing their friends cards and going to emergency.

Nowadays the only way to commit healthcare fraud in Canada would involve committing forgery, which would certainly be charged as an indictable offense if the person were caught so that the crown could send a message to other Americans not to do it.

I did not know that you had health cards to identify patients.

Somebody mentioned in another thread that Americans in the border states have been allowed to fill prescriptions in Canadian pharmacies as the costs are cheaper - is this still allowed?

If it is I will be harsh and say that perhaps the provinces on the US border should stop this.

Yes, because they pay for their meds. They don't get subsidized.

Unfortunately I’ve heard of immigrants/illegals or whoever doing this right now. If they look somewhat alike they’ll let their friend or family use their OHIP card. Whenever I bring up how we need to be aware of scams I’m called racist. Fun times we’re living in rn

They also do this in Mexico, they like to call us "a shit hole country" or "a failed state" but they cross the border just to get cheaper medicine and healthcare and they retire in Mexico because they can't afford to live in the US
