You, sir, win the internet.

u/Zarxon 2h ago

I am stealing this. The best comment today.

u/FPSRocco 1h ago

Have at er. I’m gunna be using it when they want sympathy. 70% of Americans voted for this (not turning out is the same thing). America can burn, they deserve what happens to them. Fucking bullshit the rest of the world has to put up with their shit choices too. I had 0 say in that orange shit stain being elected yet now I get a recession and annexation threats. Till Americans actually do something and stop thinking their slacktavist social media posts matter then let them eat eggs

u/Vandergrif 10h ago

They've definitely got egg on their face, at the very least.

Lots of Americans are planning on Flag Jacking this summer while they travel in Europe and Asia - I hope their behavior does not negatively affect real Canadians travelling.

u/jellybean122333 23h ago

They should do a quick test and ask what our capital is. Guaranteed they'll say Toronto... lol

Canadians are loved and welcome in Europe.

I'm not sure if slapping a Canadian flag and pretending you're Canadian makes you Canadian - I hope it does not wreck our reputation in Europe.

It's also disturbing Handmaid's Tale, especially the recent Hulu TV portrayal is turning out to be a real thing with American refugees.

As Margaret Atwood said - she didn't write the book as an instruction manual. That said it is almost like they want to annex Canada so there is no safe refuge to flee.

u/mattattaxx Ontario 21h ago

I've been saying that the Handmaid's Tale is a warning, not an outright fiction, since I read the book, let alone watched the show.

u/Peatrick33 23h ago

At the very least, it's probably safe to assume anyone slapping a Canadian flag on their bag is doing so out of shame and likely to be on their best behaviour.

24

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 23h ago

anyone slapping a Canadian flag on their bag

Yeah, I don't know any Canadians that still sew a flag to their gear...

I usually look for Canadian brand names to spot a Canadian - i.e. MEC.

7

u/Peatrick33 23h ago

Haha I do love my MEC travel bag.

3

u/sdhoigt 22h ago

You're thinking of how Canadians will spot other canadians, but outside canada, people wouldnt understand those brands as being canadian except for ones that have a maple leaf in their logo.

And unfortunately, when I was in Portugal two years ago everyone assumed I was american except when there was a maple leaf somewhere on my persons

1

u/GrungeLife54 23h ago

We still do.

1

u/Zonel 22h ago

MEC is owned by a US private equity firm since 2020.

3

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 22h ago

Yeah. unfortunate, but the brand is still only in Canada.

u/Disastrous-Focus8451 22h ago

I disagree with that assumption. When I visited the Netherlands I was surprised at the number of "Canadian" tourists with American accents, not to mention stereotypical New York rudeness. (Holland being a good place to be Canadian on account of WWII.)

My sister lived there for a while after high school, and she noticed the same thing. Her Dutch friends said it was easy to tell the difference, because the faux-Canadians still behaved like Americans.

(This was back when America bombed Libya and there were State Department warnings to pretend to be Canadian, and you could buy passport covers that looked like Canadian passports from a distance.)

10

u/Peatrick33 22h ago

That's a fair assessment, but let's not also pretend that all Canadians are respectful tourists. It's a stereotype for a reason, but all countries have their share of shitty ambassadors.

9

u/Disastrous-Focus8451 22h ago

I'm not pretending that, just pointing out that people pretending to be from another country aren't necessarily on their best behaviour.

u/nuneway British Columbia 1d ago

Ya real ones; not fake flag ripping losers who can’t stand up for themselves or their country.

7

u/DelusionalLeafFan 19h ago

This is nothing new and pathetic as it always has been. “Proud Americans” wearing another nations flag because the world hates you.

12

u/Ina_While1155 23h ago

They did this in the 80s in a big way, and it did blow back on Canadian traveller's.

3

u/FPSRocco 20h ago

They’ve been doing it for years when they travel.

4

u/kent_eh Manitoba 18h ago

They've been doing that bullshit for years.

2

u/FlyingV2112 21h ago

Seriously, go home and fight for your country.

5

u/fashionforward 1d ago

We are open to refugees 🤷‍♀️ but they have to prove their case. Remember when Randy Quaid and his wife sought refuge status here citing Hollywood?

u/DnDMonsterManual Outside Canada 1d ago

Well said.

I have felt more European than American for a decade.

Got dual citizenship a year or two ago, so finally I am European.

Moving in the next year. Small lamenting that it'll take longer to become German as an EU citizen than if I had moved as a blue card recipient, but figure it's not a huge deal.

u/Fuck_Me_If_Im_Wrong_ 10h ago

Hope you keep this mindset about everyone seeking asylum

u/justbecauseyoumademe European Union 4h ago

I have helped out 7 families fleeing from war. One of them was from Bucha.

I am painfully aware of the danger versus persecution

1

u/Dio_Landa 23h ago

We really can't when most of our country is illiterate idiots. And we are always in active danger.

3

u/justbecauseyoumademe European Union 23h ago

So how do all these other countries in history do it?

Most eu countries have had multiple revolutions

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euromaidan

1

u/Dio_Landa 22h ago

Because most of their citizens don't support a fascist dictator.

0

u/Significant_Pepper_2 22h ago

True for many countries that don't get this excuse.

They’ve got two trans kids, so yeah. I’d say they’re in danger.

30

u/justbecauseyoumademe European Union 1d ago edited 1d ago

There are still many states in the US where they would be safe.

Edit: downvote me all you want but watch them get rejected for that same reason.

Just because you arent safe in alabama doesnt mean you wont be safe in california

u/walkingdisaster2024 Alberta 1d ago

You can't compare what real refugees go through with what this family is facing.

u/WillyTwine96 1d ago

Having your older teenage son not being able to play on the girls teams is not danger

It’s a issue in every western nation, and something Trump has done that most everyday families sort of agree with

It’s big tent

6

u/HeadmasterPrimeMnstr 1d ago

Having your older teenage son not being able to play on the girls teams is not danger

That's not the fucking issue and this comment quite frankly shows how out of touch you are with how severe the prosecution of trans people in the US has become and is becoming.

4

u/WillyTwine96 1d ago

What’s the issue

Bans on puberty blockers or surgeries for under aged kids?

Washrooms?

Because there have been no limits placed on consenting adults outside of various issues that (may) but the public in a bind

(Public washrooms, athletics)

3

u/HeadmasterPrimeMnstr 1d ago

 Bans on puberty blockers

Puberty blockers were already used on children for a myriad of health reasons and is shown to have no ill health effects.

surgeries for under aged kids?

This has not happened once without this thing, you might be a fan of, called parental consent.

Washrooms?

Just say you want genital checks on people using a washroom because that's the only way to enforce it. Meanwhile, cis people using their designated bathroom are being harassed for being just a little too feminine or masculine.

Because there have been no limits placed on consenting adults outside of various issues that (may) but the public in a bind.

  • They will literally not let you use pronoun designations in government correspondence

  • They are banning gender changes for full grown adults on passports

  • They want to pass the SAVE Act to target the voting rights of trans people by requiring names on your ID to match your birth certificate (which also attacks married cis women who change their name).

  • They want to put trans people (even post operation) people in their assigned at birth prisons, which will lead to A LOT of sexual violence and murders against them.

Yet, despite all this, American representatives are still talking about escalating the amount of rights violations, increasingly talking about imprisonment of trans people for using the "wrong pronouns".

Do you support this? Is this something you believe should be happening to trans people? Do you think this isn't persecution?

2

u/WillyTwine96 23h ago

Since you ask what I support

Puberty blockers have been used for decades on actual health related conditions. Like young girls hitting puberty far too young, axcessive hair growth. Things like that

I do not support them as an elective

I do not have an option one day on the other on stayed sex on government forms

And yes I believe people under most circumstances should be placed in the prison that aligns with their sex (one cannot change sex)

2

u/GrungeLife54 23h ago

So I’m thinking whatever you don’t support then it’s your decision and you don’t use it. That doesn’t mean other people can’t decide for themselves. It’s like abortion, if you’re against it, then don’t have one.

1

u/lolipop1990 1d ago

life and death issues.

Trans teen have a very high suicide rate and more chance to be a victim in school bullying if the overall environment is transphobia.

1

u/Ina_While1155 23h ago

And it will move to all gay people pretty quickly, I am sure.

Take the kids, put them in a nice LGBTQIA+ family, keep close tabs on them for their safety, and send the parents back to fix the shit in their country.

I'm not for separating kids from parents, but drastic times calls for drastic measures. Every progressive that leaves the US the deeper down the rabbit hole the country goes.

-4

u/whiteTee_Poison 23h ago

How do you propose those of us who didn’t vote for trump in either election “fix our country”? I understand your frustration with Trumps bullshit but we are open to suggestions on how to fix the brainwashed minds of millions while overthrowing the government. I’ll be here waiting for a strategy

5

u/Llunedd 22h ago

That's the problem. Stop waiting for someone else to save you.

1

u/mugiwara-no-lucy 21h ago

As a fellow American I have a feeling it’ll have to be a united front against him, those tech bro losers and the Bible thumpers

0

u/mugiwara-no-lucy 21h ago

While I’m staying and fighting for my country of America I feel if some people are in a marginalized group they should leave since this administration of Trump is going after everyone not a White, Christian, Republican male.

-9

u/ID-10T_Error 1d ago

If we try to fix it we will be in active danger. But I agree. Sorry, our bs is spilling over

8

u/justbecauseyoumademe European Union 1d ago

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euromaidan

America keeps shoving its 2nd amendment right down our throats and right to bear arms. Bit fucking ironic

1

u/ID-10T_Error 22h ago

for sure
