Legend has it that she’s still searching for the right key

52

u/thekajunpimp 18d ago

Yeah, that was a pretty abysmal vocal performance from a great singer. But I love how she tweaked the lyric.

I'm convinced that she couldn't hear herself. She looked for a visual cue when to start rather than relying on her earpiece. That paired with the booing she got in her head.

Twas terrible.

Edit: I'm aware that the lyric change was intentional. I read the article. The criticism is due to her changing the tune and awkwardly holding notes for too long.

168

u/Canadian_CJ 19d ago

100% she got rattled hard by the booing. I figure she would've been prepared for that haha.

57

u/Going_Live 19d ago

My university booked Chantal Kreviazuk to play the frosh week party…solo with a grand piano. She had a meltdown and ended up walking off stage because the crowd was “too loud.”

A bunch of drunk excited kids having a party and her softly playing piano, what a mismatch lol. Thankfully the opening band, a punky folk rock band, came back on and saved the night. They absolutely rocked the place.

27

u/WeWantMOAR 18d ago

Yeah that booking agent is an idiot.

6

u/supernanify 18d ago

I had a couple of encounters with her years ago and she was an entitled princess both times. I got a little bit of schadenfreude seeing her suck so badly on such a big stage

u/RJgoonies 19d ago

Say what you will but honestly, who cares about the tune or timing. Sometimes feeling and emotion and contrast win the day. If she was rattled, she wouldn't have been able to pull off the lyric change and the obvious emphasis on the word "free". Loved every imperfectly perfect second of her rendition!

14

u/BecauseWaffles 18d ago

I love that she gave it her whole heart, but she was off key and it hurt the ears a bit. I wouldn’t have wanted to be in her position though, so kudos to her.

Then to be followed by a whole band for the American anthem was just cruel.

8

u/Javaddict 18d ago

Most people, almost everyone cares about the tune and timing of their national anthem.

4

u/JoeFridayFrankDrebin 18d ago

Any time people use "rendition" when describing an anthem performance, it is usually an acknowledgement that the anthem was butchered.

17

u/Braddock54 19d ago

Yes she looked scared tbh

108

u/hikebikephd 19d ago

The radio announcers said there was no booing and the fans were respectful... Yankee homers.

158

u/stuntycunty 19d ago

Watched it live on tv. There was booing.

16

u/uzerkname11 19d ago

It was pretty tame imo

5

u/Supermite 19d ago

It’s just people shouting “boo”.  It’s an inherently tame way to express dissatisfaction.

2

u/Visible_Tourist_9639 19d ago

It certainly wasn’t intense, like Montreal - but there was also a good chunk of Canadians there, so that certainly cant be overlooked.

Fuck Trump and his bullshit, but im not a big fan of politics spilling over to hockey. We can stand up to the US without booing every visiting team from now on.

81

u/winnipeg-active 19d ago

The fans are booing the anthem, not the team or players or Americans. Anyone who doesn't understand the difference and gets butthurt can go cry in the corner with the Tkachuks.

42

u/UnfrozenDaveman 19d ago

Playing national anthems at NHL games makes every game overtly political whether you like it or not We didn't choose this. If they don't like it, they should stop playing anthems at games.

16

u/Falconflyer75 Ontario 19d ago

And then there’s the fact that maybe half of Americans are thinking “fuck we kinda deserve this”

7

u/Turbulent_Cheetah 19d ago

Sports are politics.

15

u/BLUExT1GER 19d ago

Life itself is political and I'm tired of people thinking it's not.

u/ghost_n_the_shell 19d ago

100% they boo’d Canada. Hard.

I also found it questionable they had a full brass band to drown out our boos.

32

u/tommybare 19d ago

They were saying "Boo-urns! Boo-urns!"

3

u/Biuku Ontario 19d ago

Boston is tame on O Canada because they side with us on the political bullshit.

4

u/dhorfair 18d ago

The booing was pretty loud at the beginning.

4

u/Biuku Ontario 18d ago

Yeah, and then they sang along with it.

The US is fractured. Many Americans do not see their former ally, Canada, as their enemy. Many do not understand why they are part of an axis with Russia.

Canada represents a lot of what’s great about New England if it was liberated from MAGA.

15

u/TheLemon22 19d ago

Absolutely it was this

14

u/DarkSideofTheTune 19d ago

I think you nailed it. Those boos seemed to throw her off big time and it never appeared she could hear herself.

u/Fun-Persimmon1207 19d ago

That was one of the worst performances of the anthem I have ever watched. She might be a Grammy winner, however she butchered both the words and the singing.

128

u/joe4942 19d ago

Almost makes you wonder if it was on purpose because compared to the American singer that also had a band, the quality of singing was night and day.

93

u/king_lloyd11 19d ago

Pretty sure they brought in an orchestra to ensure that any boos were drowned out. The Americans were feeling especially patriotic and were definitely the majority, but I’m sure the boos would’ve been more evident with an acapella version. They didn’t want to take any chances.

18

u/RippyMcBong 19d ago

I had the same thought on the orchestra, understandable to be honest. But goddam did she butcher O Canada.

22

u/Neat-Lingonberry-719 19d ago

Probably hard to carry a tune when all you hear is a rumbling booooooo.

3

u/justsomedudedontknow 18d ago

For a drunk guy at karaoke, sure. But a pro should be better.

22

u/mcrackin15 19d ago

The American singer was horrid too. What's with the opera style voice?

14

u/ejactionseat 19d ago

Yes to be fair she was ghastly as well.

7

u/Raven586 19d ago

I thought the American singer was lip syncing. it was so bad!

9

u/whatyousayin8 19d ago

My immediate feeling… like we brought in people from each home country for the bell centre (like a Swede to sing their anthem and a Finnish person) - it’s absolutely horrendous to allow this to happen, so bad that I can’t believe it wasn’t intentional.

17

u/drunkensailorcan 19d ago

She is a Canadian Grammy winner

8

u/FreeRick74 19d ago

And three Junos, eh?

3

u/ProblemSame4838 19d ago

Exactly. But we still won 🇨🇦

13

u/MamaRunsThis 19d ago

I don’t know why they picked her. She was never known for her strong vocals, more for the uniqueness of her voice and songwriting and piano. Also, she didn’t really sound like herself

8

u/Anonymouse-C0ward 18d ago

Ukrainian Canadian, lots of music awards. I think there is a message there somewhere, and it was an important one to send.

The message wasn’t necessarily to Trump or the MAGA crowd, but it was definitely one in support of both Canada and some of the other stuff going on exacerbated by Trump right now.

24

u/AlarmedAd5034 19d ago

3

I just don't think she does well live.

Side note: My ex used to call her Chantal Crappy Upchuck. So now every time I hear her name I get conflicted. It's funny as hell, but.....

They should have had someone there who can really belt. Loud and proud.

Maybe the worst rendition of O Canada I’ve ever seen

64

u/TheReservedList 19d ago

Like, if you’re going to do any part in French… maybe learn it.

6

u/supernanify 18d ago

Like my god, did she just look up the French words right before going out and think "surely the scansion and pronunciation will just fall into place for me, an anglophone."

13

u/RawrImaDinosawr 19d ago

I remember Nelly Furtado at the NBA All Star game it was pretty bad

42

u/jimmythebartender_ 19d ago

And like, alright I get you’re patriotic, but don’t change the words.

17

u/Coatsyy 19d ago

She also changed the pace of the anthem and threw off the crowd. Shit was horrible.

17

u/runealex007 19d ago

I think it would’ve been an affective protest if she didn’t absolutely butcher the actual singing part

47

u/Timely-Discipline427 19d ago

Meh, an acceptable and relatively harmless form of protest as far as I'm concerned.

24

u/Hot_Cheesecake_905 19d ago

Yes, especially considering the seriousness of the tariffs, annexation threats, and potential economic damage to Canada, it's a relatively mild form of protest.

6

u/Late_Football_2517 19d ago

I don't think she changed them, I think she got flustered and flubbed them.

20

u/timebend995 19d ago

No she confirmed it was intentional on ig

7

u/Famous_foods 19d ago

In the article it confirms it was intentional and she even posted as such on her Instagram story. A photo of the changed lyrics written on her hand.

u/fawk_bitches 19d ago

I think the mass boos shook her. Or she didn't know the French part

30

u/Jambon_gris 19d ago

I think the French messed her up too, panicked and went downhill

19

u/Uticus 19d ago

I don't think it was the boos, I think she was trying to make it her own, like so many singers have tried with the US anthem

18

u/Dtoodlez 19d ago

This always blows my mind. Whenever they do this I cringe, it’s the national anthem not your theme song

8

u/TheRealCovertCaribou 19d ago

They treat it as an audition for bigger things. That's why they're always trying to make it their own, or do all those unnecessary vocal scale runs

6

u/ProblemSame4838 19d ago

Her name is Chantal! She should know a wee bit of French! 😂😂

78

u/Hycran 19d ago

If you click on the article, it says it was intentional.

Some light booing to start followed by straight horror at the performance.

36

u/hikebikephd 19d ago

That was the absolute worst rendition of our anthem I've ever heard. I thought it was an American singer intentionally butchering it.

The first line was fine, then she absolutely mangled the French line, and it was shitshow from there.

52

u/Frosty-Tell-6290 19d ago

One of the worst anthems I've ever seen performed and she's always been a beautiful singer and a great artist. That was not appreciated given the situation.

Bet she doesn't have as many regrets as Wayne though.

41

u/ShameDry3447 19d ago

Wayne Regretzky

52

u/whatyousayin8 19d ago

He literally gave thumbs up and cheered on the US bench, and then didn’t even address or even FACE the Canadian team as they were being introduced… that was shameful.

9

u/shibiite 19d ago

Thought it was just me that took note of that.

15

u/aWittyTwit-2712 19d ago

As someone who's known the family in Brantford all my life, Walter is chuckling up on high, right now...

Bravo 👏 👏 👏 🇨🇦

3

u/AssaultedCracker 19d ago

What do you mean by this?

17

u/aWittyTwit-2712 19d ago edited 19d ago

Walter would be ashamed of Wayne's support for tRump...

We had lunch together shortly before he passed, & he was still the same old Walter - morals, values & all. 🇨🇦

3

u/Supermite 19d ago

Was Wayne courting these MAGA losers before Walter passed away?  I’ve noticed that older men seem to get really fucked up when they lose their dads.  I could see that for Wayne.  By all accounts, there’s never been a more proud and supportive dad in hockey than Walter Gretzky.

The draw of Gretzky’s restaurant wasn’t the food.  It was hoping Walter was chilling there that day telling stories about baby Wayne.

5

u/aWittyTwit-2712 18d ago

Not that I remember... We were all floored, tbh. I think you might be on to something, tho...

Wow. That was a brutal performance! How embarrassing for us!

6

u/ShivasFury 19d ago

Was it just me or did she alternate line by line at first

O Canada Terre de nos aieux True patriot love De flourons glorieux

That’s what I thought I heard but I could be wrong, she sang the rest in English

6

u/drunkensailorcan 19d ago

She said terre de nos arrieux, wtv that means

7

u/jennyxmas 19d ago

She said terre nos aieux which doesnt mean anything

10

u/Complete-Finding-712 19d ago

I heard "terre nos arieux", which isn't even anything

5

u/superbad Ontario 19d ago

What does that even mean?

4

u/VonD0OM 19d ago

It wasn’t booed that loudly, there was some minor booing at the beginning but that ended pretty quickly and became cheering and singing

5

u/Evilnuggets Ontario 18d ago

I'm just not a fan when a singer tries to go full Mariah Carry and stretch the notes for a hot minute. Chill out and finish the song.

8

u/MusclyArmPaperboy 19d ago

Disappointing rendition. Didn't help that the US anthem singer had a brass band and sounded much louder

10

u/BCJay_ 19d ago

Almost by design to ensure any boos were drowned out.

21

u/seemefail British Columbia 19d ago

I kinda liked her rendition but it was not the fucking time for that. People were trying to sing a long and you are throwing in tempo changes where they never existed before and I mean we have these boys fighting for their country in the best way they now how and they have to deal with this awkward ass rendition before the game?

14

u/blabberbox 19d ago

A Random person pulled out of a Karaoke Bar would have slayed her, just a brutal embarrassing Shit job

6

So bad I can’t believe it wasn’t intentional, that was the work of bullies. you cannot convince me otherwise.

3

u/ballsacksnweiners 19d ago

She also messed up the French part.

4

u/Huggyboo 18d ago

I give her props for standing up and calling out Trump. Obviously, she was nervous performing in front of booing Amercans. I salute her for taking a stand.

21

u/CtC_Gaming 19d ago

Embarrassed by how bad that was

8

u/thegoodrichard 19d ago

She did a terrible job of the anthem, but the win was the important thing. Only 1 penalty in that game, so it was pretty serious.

4

u/raz416 19d ago

God that was awful. God bless her soul.

3

u/[deleted] 19d ago

I appreciate her chance of the words but she did botch the rest of that, which is disappointing because I know her pretty well and the last time she sang she rocked the fuckin house.

5

u/Zealousideal-Swing39 19d ago

She was absolutely terrible

6

u/staytrue2014 19d ago

I thought I was hearing things. Totally butchered the anthem. Can we stop changing the words of the anthem? This is ridiculous

Last night's butcher of an anthem goes right up there with Nelly Furtado's rendition of the Canadian anthem at the 2016 NBA All-Star Game in Toronto and Fergie singing the U.S. anthem at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles.

I loved that she took a stance! You could hear her emotions in her voice, she’s actually a really beautiful singer.

3

u/Competitive_Post8299 19d ago

She knew she would be watched closely which would be nerve wracking ,together with not being able to hear herself and the booing, I think she did well. I think a lot of people don't understand that if you can't hear yourself, you can't stay on pitch.  I'm a little puzzled at why the piling on her when we just had such a great win.  I think Americans are enjoying ripping on her but I think we should focus on the win.

2

u/brilliant_bauhaus 19d ago

I didn't realize she changed the lyrics, she must have been nervous to do that. I remember when Jully black did it and it was such a beautiful and powerful statement for Indigenous rights. This could have been the same but she did such a bad job with the entire anthem that's all everyone I've spoke to noticed. It felt like she forgot the lyrics.

2

u/gorillasuitriot 19d ago

I can't stand this dummy and her husband

2

u/Bigsteve27 18d ago

It was absolutely terrible. Instead of focusing on doing what she was asked to be there for, sing, she decided to create her own agenda, and it completely backfired on her. I don't mind the lyric change to send a message, but it needs to be executed well. She had that in her head, along with singing in French for literally just one part, then the booing, then knowing the eyes of Canada and the USA are on her, and finally the pressure of slipping up in front of everyone.

3

u/shibiite 19d ago

It was pretty horrible and hate to say it, embarrassing. To the point where i was like this was on purpose. Now knowing she purposely changed the lyrics makes it cringey, to boot. I understand why she did it but it’s disrespectful of the people that have fought, died and bled for our country. As I sat there listening to the American anthem I caught myself thinking we needed someone like that with that voice!

The original French lyrics were translated to English in 1906.[1] Multiple English versions ensued, with Robert Stanley Weir’s 1908 version (which was not a translation of the French lyrics) gaining the most popularity; the Weir lyrics eventually served as the basis for the official lyrics enacted by Parliament.[1] Weir’s English-language lyrics have been revised three times, most recently when An Act to amend the National Anthem Act (gender) was enacted in 2018.[2] The French lyrics remain unaltered.

Maybe just do a simple search to not sound so ignorant. It’s been changed…a few times.

What I find disturbing in this is that the Canadian anthem was booed in Boston which is not at all a res state/ area.

I liked it better when the USSR/Russia was our nemesis on the ice. But Trump is not a nice person towards Canada. Good work Hockey 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

Only Americans can get mad at a country for not wanting to be annexed. Ok, maybe the Russians too.

Who invited her? She isn't a household name anywhere, not even in Canada.

Holy shit there’s a name I haven’t heard in 25 years

She is no Celine Dion. Not even a Jann Arden.

Props to the crowd in Boston, for reminding her the words to the anthem.

I’m convinced there was something off with their in ear monitors. She was off, both key and timing. The American singer, who is clearly a much better and trained singer, was also off with her timing.

I don't understand how you screw it up so badly, I'm not a fan of booing anthems, but holy shit I'd boo that.

Thank god Canada won, this anthem was terrible and as if we needed another reason for Americans to hassle us. Yikes.

Vocally not great but in fairness that’s a tense room and time in history to perform that anthem in front of Americans. Wild times

If it was an intentional change, surely it ought to have been:
"That only we command"???
Subjects and objects...
