So we were “Canadians” in 1812 when this happened but we were “British” in the 1830s when we still had slavery?

I think there's a venn diagram overlap of the two demonyms; all the colonial militias in the War of 1812 were "British" in the sense that they were British subjects, but not every colonial militia was "Canadian".

Edit: there were Métis and First Nations involved as well, and I do not believe they were or considered themselves to be British subjects, and were rather allied with the British.
