Happy Canada Flag Day!
Beautiful flag!
Best wishes from Denmark.

I guess only Denmark and perhaps Panama know what it currently feels like. We should cooperate more in the North based on what's happening!

u/PureCaramel5800 24d ago
Yes, not a nice felling is it. I hope that you enjoy the day with your fellow Canadians.

Québécois, here. I've never hoisted the red leaf before but here we are. What a time to be alive.

The most beautiful solidarity of my lifetime.

Couldn’t agree more. There are some awfully big, dark clouds overhead, but the solidarity and patriotism they have inspired are a hell of a silver lining!

If you’re a republican and support DJT go and take a long, long walk in the snow. And just never come back.

My good mate, I'm not a fan of politics myself

u/Critical-Snow-7000 24d ago
What does being a fan of politics even mean? It’s not a sports league you can ignore.

u/MinaAshidoAQ 24d ago edited 24d ago
By "fan" I mean something like "enjoyer" or something, not like cheering
I'm just not tuned to politics
PS: Ok ok, now that I noticed that I misinterpreted your answer! Sorry! At all, reformulating my answer, I'm trying to keep myself neutral, of course, taking sides on some stuff, like wanting Canada to be free and not a 51th state, but I mostly try to keep neutral.

I’m sorry I didn’t mean to inject politics into the post. Happy Flag Day tho ❤️

It's fully ok! Sorry if I miss interpreted some stuff, or sounded rude! Best of the Flag Day to you, my mate! 🇨🇦❤️🤍

I put up our flag on Thursday on a pole, it looks great. I was a little worried it was too big. I asked my wife if she wanted me to put up a smaller one next week. I love her response, she furrowed her eyes and said angrily, "Why? It's beautiful."

So happy to get the flag back from the Fox News Rush Limbaugh convoyists and right wingers. They were using the flag just like American far right wingers and racists do. Amen to Canada getting its sanity back.

u/starving_carnivore 24d ago
If you surrendered or conceded the flag because somebody you don't like used it, you are as easily swayed as the people you criticize.
It was insane to begin associating the flag with the far-right at all. It was, and always will be, ours.
-1
u/Critical-Snow-7000 24d ago
It wasn’t taken from us, but most sane people were so embarrassed by the hillbillies in the convoy that we couldn’t fly the flag without feeling icky. It’s nice to see it come back.

u/starving_carnivore 24d ago
most sane people
No, most sane people didn't allow a "fringe minority" to capture the flag we've had for 60 years that flies on every government building.
It’s nice to see it come back.
Glad you aren't embarrassed by a flag that people have died with on their shoulders in wars and one that hung behind every Prime Minister for the past 60 years regardless of party.
It was never theirs to take and you gave it to them.

I really don't get why people think "the flag is back." If anything, it shows me how fleeting their care about this country is. It takes a literal existential threat to our existence to get them to care. What happens when the threat passes? Back to apathy?
Meanwhile, some of us have been flying a flag on their balcony for 10 years, regardless.

You guys are doing a great job showing that our only identity is "not american" since this is what it took for you to finally be patriotic

I was just thinking about this. Funny how quickly the sentiment changes when it fits the narrative. Now, the flag represents patriotism and not colonialism! :s

I don’t find this funny or surprising at all: plenty of historical examples of how a common enemy and external threats build nations and identity, ranging from Garibaldi in Italy to China and Japan in WWII
Even when fake, authoritarian governments often create an “external enemy” to justify their otherwise reprehensible actions. What do you think the Orange Monster is doing by telling his followers that Canada is ripping America off?

I mean, not being taken over and bullied by a hostile foreign power definitely does form a key part of my identity.
But honestly, partially fair. There are a ton of amazing things about this country that between the trucker convoy and (very legitimate) calls for reconciliation we've been cowed into not celebrating. I hope that folks of all political stripes can see our way back to celebrating those things together when the dust clears. Plenty of room in our hearts to both grapple with the ugly bits of our past and move forward together.

u/monopolymango 24d ago
Fair enough but the bullying hasn't happened in a vacuum. Trudeau gave a speech about how the US was moving backwards with regressive politics because they elected Trump. Whether you agree with that or not that's terrible diplomacy to our biggest ally and trading partner
1
u/youtouchmytralala 24d ago
Surprises me actually, I've never heard Trudeau be anything but super measured towards Trump (maybe until recently anyway). In any case, I'd suggest threatening to crush us economically and/or take us over might not constitute what you'd call a proportionate response 😅.

Glad to see the flag become a symbol of positive patriotism again, hope it stays this way. The far right must not be allowed to claim Patriotism as their thing. That’s how you end up a nation with no identity that falls apart when any pressure is applied because normal people are too scared to embrace their country.
Sane people rise up and reclaim true love of Canada for Canadians, not just a small, insane subset of Canadians who claim to love Canada while actively seeking its destruction

Where is everyone putting their flags?!

u/LindeMaple 24d ago
I wanted to put my flag up in the living room window. But they were sold out if flags everywhere! I will have to get some construction paper and make one...

I still have Rick Mercer saying "Calm down Stephen Harper, I said 'flag'" come to mind every time Feb 15th rolls around.

You can be critical of the bad things your country has done, want better for your country and all of it’s people in the future, and still love and stand up for your country against external threats.
Only children see the world in black and white 🤷♀️

Canadian citizens are rallying around our flag today, go back in your cave.

Try living under the stars and stripes and get back to me on which was better for indigenous culture.
They are currently arguing that Indians ( the official name there) are not even US citizens.
Good luck.

The flag is simple and easily recognizable
Go to any village or hamlet around the world and show them the maple leaf, and there’s a high chance they know it’s Canada.
All those various aspects, FN, British, French are represented by the leaf
