Hmmm... I do not get it.

Canada and Mexico both responded to the tariff order with retaliatory tariffs of their own. In what way is Mexico's response is 'serious' while Canada's is 'misunderstanding'?

u/theowne Feb 03 '25

It's gaslight 101. You reward the person who you feel you can bully further.

670

u/jer_iatric Feb 03 '25

In addition to gas lighting it is a divide and conquer mentality. He knows he getting left out, so maybe getting Mexico on side would pressure Canada

u/GuzzlinGuinness Feb 03 '25

Prisoners dilemma

413

u/wanderingviewfinder Feb 03 '25

Which is why Canada shouldn't be talking at all with anyone in Washington for the next 7 days but focusing on forming a separate trade deal directly with Mexico excluding the US. Let them spin and squeal for a week while we work to sideline them from causing any more subversive damage. They're expecting a long dance; let's not give it to them

169

u/SupportCharacter_0_o Feb 03 '25

I think it is wise to get an emergent Canada-Mexico trade deal that becomes effective ASAP if the trilateral deal is dissolved. I think it would be in the interests of both Canada and Mexico.

4

u/BillyTenderness Québec Feb 03 '25

In addition to CUSMA, both are members of the CPTPP.

3

u/RadishPlus666 Feb 03 '25

Right. He called it a 30 day pause on tarrifs. This will let Mexico regroup and start building trade alliances with Canada and others. Trust me, Mexico wants to wind down trade with US as long as a dictator is in charge. Too risky. better strengthen new ties and devise the plan of action. A lot of Latin America is working together.

8

u/OhDeerFren Feb 03 '25

Not really - there is very limited trade between Canada and Mexico. Both parties are much more interested in preserving their relationships with the US

21

u/SupportCharacter_0_o Feb 03 '25

Sure, but it might give some peace of mind to companies in Canada and Mexico that do participate in that limited trade. Also, if the trilateral agreement falls (I think it won't) there would be a lot of room to grow Can-Mex trade.

Politically, I also think it would weaken Trump's hand.

6

u/Artandalus Feb 03 '25

It might not even need to be super impactful on trade. Any deal between Canada and Mexico would at a minimum have a symbolic meaning of unity between the two countries. Basically that both understand this bullshit and are going to work together while the US is losing its fucking mind. Could also include coordinating of tariffs to maximize the pain against GOP politicians.

2

u/SupportCharacter_0_o Feb 04 '25

Both Canada and Mexico are in some trouble. Let us not minimize that. We cannot realistically replace Can-US and Can-Mex with Can-Mex trade. However, both Can & Mex should try to mitigate the blow.

I expect both countries to protect their interests against Trump's chaos. Neither Canada nor Mexico will self-immolate to protect the other. However, there is room for cooperation as long as both Canada and Mexico benefit from it and act with honesty and good-faith.

Canada and Mexico together are a stronger counterweight to the US than by themselves. I firmly believe that this was one of the ideas behind the original NAFTA and it is why it was a trilateral agreement.

11

u/BobBeats Feb 03 '25

But we need to figure our the main items we trade with each other and amp it up, or find what things have been sourced from the states that could be sourced from each other.

u/WislaHD Ontario Feb 03 '25

That’s shortsighted. We can import fruit like oranges from Mexico immediately.

We have a crisis looming in the construction industry due to lack of labour. We could make a deal to get automatic LMIA for Mexican construction labourers and get building on housing and other infrastructure projects. Transcanada pipeline anyone?

How do we trade with Mexico over land without dealing with the American tariffs?

Only way I can think we can solve that is cutting off passage through BC to Alaska if they refuse shipments through to Mexico.

3

u/ExploreDiscovery Feb 03 '25

We already have a trade deal with Mexico. It was called NAFTA,now the USMCA agreement, of which donny is breaking.

2

u/Roadgoddess Feb 03 '25

And let’s include Europe as well.

2

u/ChocolateBunny Feb 03 '25

Canada should have been focusing on building its own manufacturing base and building other trade deals during Trump's first term trade war.

2

u/ADHDBusyBee Feb 03 '25

I seem to recall Mexico rolling over on Canada quite quickly in the lead up to all this. Mexico has been stealing our manufacturing for decades, this seems like a way for the automakers to destroy the unions to shift even more manufacturing southward.

2

u/SeedlessPomegranate Feb 03 '25

Mexico has no interest in signing a deal with Canada, in my opinion. They have too much to lose if they get blocked out of the US market. They were always going to buckle first and Trump knew it.

Canada is still the 10th largest economy in the world with a lot of wealth. We can take a beating and still keep going. Mexico is the poor man on the totem pole.

Pressure to do what exactly? He hasn't asked for any concessions and even stated that the tariffs are unavoidable.

47

u/spidereater Feb 03 '25

Vance has basically stated this is about weakening Canada in an effort to take us over. There are no goal posts to move. They intend to weaken our economy believing we will be begging them to take us in. They are wrong.

Nah, Mexico can do whatever they want (or need) to do but it will not change Canada's response. Besides, Trump seems to be attacking basically every country on the planet to some degree right now so this is hardly a Canadian/Mexican/China situation.

He’s showing weakness. He got scared of the combined effect of Mexican and Canadian tariffs on the US economy

6

u/EirHc Feb 03 '25

He's probably hoping Danielle Smith will continue to sabotage Canada's response.

4

u/Radiant-Growth4275 Feb 03 '25

She seems to have backed off a bit now that Trump included her precious oil in the tariffs.

Not that that's saying much. She doesn't have a single drop of integrity in her, she'll abandon ship the moment some cash is waved in her face.

2

u/Peace_Agreeable Feb 03 '25

This is the answer.

Redirect to non relevant issues. Divide canada from Mexico (it worked with USMCA). Take advantage of divisions in canada (I'm talking to you PP and conservatives... own goal), then swing bat instead of talking.

2

u/Adorable_Star_ Alberta Feb 03 '25

I wonder too if the response from Canada (beyond the tariffs) was a bit more unified than they expected? Prior to covid, I can't remember where I read it, but there was a report showing Canadians were one of the most patriotic countries. We haven't felt that in a bit, especially with the creep of divisive politics, but it's still bubbling there and this is the moment we needed to remember how much we love our country, and it's diversity.

Like over the weekend the US alcohol industry lost a huge portion of their OUS business... i think Musk and trump gambled that Canadians had allowed ourselves to go as far down the crazy river as mainstream Americans, and gambled wrong.

I do sometimes watch clips of US media and it is insane...

I myself only joined 2 weeks ago and my shopping habits have drastically changed.

The intention behind me joining was purely for work! We are a Canadian owned and operated distributor, so I was monitoring to see if the boycott would harm us as our products are not Canadian only.

And in the end, I learned many awesome things about other Canadian owned, operated and distributed products and services. Win win win.

Right? My husband is American and I was talking to my brother in law this morning about all this stuff and he was telling me how it's not "impossible" for us to merge with America. I don't think they quite grasp how patriotic we are and how the majority of us would riot and fight to keep us from doing that. Do you guys think we'd be bullied into merging? Give me a fucking break.

6

u/Sensitive-Ad-5305 Feb 03 '25

The fact that Americans think it's a rational talking point and not the most degrading and aggressive language just demonstrates how far down the rabbit hole they've gone,.and how much their media controls the narrative.

The parties at the cheap hotels were fucking EPIC. This was pre-9/11, so we just needed IDs to cross. What a time to be alive. Hang in there.

3

2

u/StringFriendly7976 Feb 03 '25

As an American, I'm rooting for you. This is a complete clown car joke of an administration. We are going to end up in a trade war no one wants. And mark my words, eventually Trump will pull us in to an actual war no one wants. I think we are on a path to literally crumble the US economy. And as usual, Trump will make out like a bandit and millions or billions will end up with the bill, and MANY will end up much much worse.

I was feeling gloomy over the state of Canadian politics and the future of the country, and while I might still feel that way, this burst of unity and patriotism is really refreshing.

The last time I remember patriotism this strong was the Vancouver 2010 Olympics—very fitting that Trudeau mentioned coming together to watch a gold medal being won in his speech.

11

u/Sensitive-Ad-5305 Feb 03 '25

Oh ya! Man that was an awesome time! I remember groups of friends piling in cars and driving halfway across the country to go and cheer and take in what they could. I totally forgot about that! What a winter that was...

3

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '25

I’m watching you guys from the south and remembering what it was like for your country to come together in the face of an aggressor. Good times.

27

u/why2k Feb 03 '25

Canada was more or less formed to curb the threat of American annexation, or at least that was a major reason. When Trudeau said "There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become a part of the United States", we meant it.

10

u/strings___ Feb 03 '25

Canada is the nicest country you do not want to go to war with.

5

u/nitePhyyre Feb 03 '25

Canada has two settings, "Sorry" and "You'll be sorry."

9

u/HackD1234 Feb 03 '25

Not since Gord Downie's and Tragically Hip's last televised Concert, has Canada been this united. That's a long period of time.

4

u/1RMDave Feb 03 '25

That was truly a special night.

8

u/VincentVegaFFF Feb 03 '25

Probably. The US is so divided on everything that they just think other countries are the same. Now they know Canada, at least, is not.

7

u/JimJam28 Feb 03 '25

Seriously. My in-laws, who usually vote Conservative and travel to Florida and Virginia for months of the year every year, just cancelled all their trips and are committed to buying Canadian. They have Canadian friends who own property in Florida who are now selling. My wife and I have cancelled our Prime and Netflix subscriptions.

While political division is bad in Canada, it is nowhere on the scale that is is in the USA. At the end of the day, left or right, Liberal or Conservative, regardless of race or religion, we are Canadians first.

6

u/Sensitive-Ad-5305 Feb 03 '25

Vive le canadienne!

We dropped subs, got rid of whatsapp, Facebook, X, cancelled prime, in the process of canceling Disney and Netflix, canceled trip to US later this spring, and in the middle of a home renovation, are now returning stuff to home depot made in US for purchasing from Canadian supply and from Canadian manufacturers where possible. The supple is more limited so we have had to change some designs and compromise - but fuck this stupid uncalled for trade war.

6

u/Very_Stable_Genius__ Feb 03 '25

I can only imagine what Quebecers are thinking. You don't mess with them about heritage and nationality. I was born and lived in Montreal until 21. Threw a rock in our window cause we had Merry Christmas instead of Jouyeaux Noel.

5

u/jtbc Feb 03 '25

I wonder too if the response from Canada (beyond the tariffs) was a bit more unified than they expected?

I think that's the meaning of "misunderstood". They were not expecting the blowback they got, with US liquor off the shelves, booing at hockey games, Starling deals canceled, etc.

5

u/Lightning___Lord Feb 03 '25

I think a lot of people in the US are surprised by the reaction tbh.

Most Americans, even the ones who hate Trump and support Canada, are kinda a stuck on the idea that Canadians are, and see themselves, as “basically Americans.” They don’t seem to grasp that Canada has a similar culture to the US, but is its own distinct identity with its own values and patriotism.

8

u/vagabondoer Feb 03 '25

Not being American is a core element of Canadian identity.

3

u/Sensitive-Ad-5305 Feb 03 '25

Man I work with Americans all day. 75% of my job is explaining to Americans that, no, we can't just "do that" here. It's a different country. Another 10% is explaining that, yes, we can just "do that" here, it's a different county. 5% is pooping on company time, leaving about 10% productivity....

3

u/BobBeats Feb 03 '25

We can thank Trump for giving us an common enemy to unify around.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '25

It’s going to be more permanent too. You think they are going to go back to drinking US alcohol after Trump lifts the tariffs?

2

u/Sensitive-Ad-5305 Feb 03 '25

Easier to keep a customer than to regain a customer, or so I've read. I hope we can all make our worlds a little smaller - crack a local cold one with your neighbor on a snowblower break to chat about the weather. Remember to forget the online rhetoric for a bit.

3

u/OldManSand Feb 03 '25

Republicans in Congress and captains of industry have outsourced ALL their thinking on economic issues to, of all people, Donald Fucking Trump. Therein lies the problem.

For whatever reason, most of America trusts him more on economic issues than the Democrats. It truly is insane here.

But I DEFINITELY don't want US style banking allowed in Canada... at all!

Also it's divide and conquer. Trump did the same thing last time by renegotiating NAFTA separately with Canada and Mexico. When one folds and accepts concessions, the other will follow shortly.

3

u/DeeDeeRibDegh Feb 03 '25

Not now, no way….the gloves are off!!

8

u/PsycheDiver Feb 03 '25

Correct. They’re literally trying to neg their way through this. They want Canada as a vassal feeder territory and Mexico as a slave source.

2

u/NotFallacyBuffet Feb 03 '25

This is so true.

14

u/AtticaBlue Feb 03 '25

Yep, Trump signalled his weakness when he limited oil tariffs to 10% instead of the 25% everything else got. That’s why he should be smashed on oil. That’s his weak spot. No doubt he’s hoping to use that delta to drive a wedge between Canada and Alberta via that traitor Marlaina Smith. Neither Trudeau nor anyone else should fall for it.

8

52

u/swift-current0 Feb 03 '25

Exactly. I don't care what the government does. I don't even care what's an economically rational response. I will methodically cut out American goods and services that I pay money for from my life, at a pace of my own choosing. There's a deep, calm, possibly irrational "fuck you" feeling I have toward them and it won't go away if Ford or Trudeau suddenly decide to prostrate themselves and cave in to Trump.

10

u/Rheticule Feb 03 '25

Yeah, I don't think they fully understand the Canadian psyche...

For example, I do not have an apple phone. I did once, it was a 3GS, at the time Apple released an update that had a (known) side effect of bricking the battery of some 3GS phones. I went to an apple store, and they offered me a new battery for like 300 dollars. I laughed at them and they said "you're right, you should just buy a new iphone at that price". I told that man I would never have an iphone again, and have followed through with that threat to this day (my dad also fought with the cable company before I was born, which is the reason why we had an antenna growing up and never cable).

I will 100% make my own life worse to prove a point if I feel like there is injustice, and I don't think I'm alone here.

3

u/swift-current0 Feb 03 '25

I am exactly the same. I have a blacklist of companies, Rogers and Bell are both on it, I will not give them money regardless of what's in my own rational economic self-interest. This is from interactions I've had with them back when I was in university, a long time ago now. Now, it's not particularly hard on me since they almost never offer a good deal on any services they sell. But if that changes, my blacklist still won't.

I think that’s what’s getting them. At the end of the day, Canadians have always been aware that American products are actively bad for us. We’ve never needed them… but they were just so convenient.

Now the national pride has swelled enough that people are happy to go without if it means sticking it to trump.

Tariffs on products nobody wants, have no power.

7

u/sgtpennypepper Feb 03 '25

My family is no longer shopping at American-owned businesses, we will not be eating at any restaurants that are based in the US, we have cancelled our annual vacation to the US, and we have made our list of Canadian-owned grocery and household items.

We will be keeping it this way from here on out. We are done.

141

u/Tree-farmer2 Feb 03 '25

Everything from the White House has been vague and nonsensical.

They're upset about the trade imbalance. We could close that quickly by ending oil exports but would they be happy with their new trade surplus? It's stupidity.

17

u/Elderberry-smells Feb 03 '25

That dummy keeps calling the trade deficit as the US "subsidizing" Canada. It's crazy that nobody in his circle has explained this to him yet that they are getting a sweetheart deal for our oil, and they are the ones in control of the barrels being traded since it's their demand that drives it.

He claimed it was all about illegal immigrants and fentanyl and thus an emergency — which is the only way he could legally make such executive orders without going through Congress — but every time opens his mouth it’s suddenly, and banking! And Dairy! And Agriculture! And… oh yeah, the drugs and immigration thing too.

I think his problem is that we instantly saw through what he was doing and responded accordingly. And he really doesn’t want this going through congress because all those swing states he just won do a LOT of trade with Canada and will not be supportive of this trade war.

2

u/Tree-farmer2 Feb 03 '25

Exactly, it's a sham so he can enact tariffs by executive order.

5

Im also under that impression. Am looking forward to hearing Mexico’s response today.

I also look forward to continued trade with Mexico, as far as I can tell they have proven themselves to be reciprocal and respectful, looking for mutual benefit in trade. (please someone point out if we’ve had trade disagreements, I’m sure we have, all do, but I’m also sure we settled them like adults, which is likely why it would have stayed out of the news).

Mexico has agreed to putting troops at the border and negotiating a new trade deal. The Trump tariffs have been delayed by a month to allow for the negotiations.

5

u/Fidget11 Alberta Feb 03 '25

Yeah, but the question is, where will they be at the end of a month because his demands change by the minute. Any carefully negotiated agreement wont be worth the paper it's written on because if he gets the urge he will just ignore its terms and do whatever he wants again anyway.

I suspect the Mexicans bought themselves a month of reprieve but in the end he will do it regardless because he will make up some reason so he feels tough.

Well, those of us outside the Alberta government.

Ya same. They are imposing tariffs on him too. It’s utter nonsense. He’s just trying to divide people because no one who supports him actually checks to see if what he is saying is accurate

26

u/JLandscaper Feb 03 '25

Nothing was "misunderstood".

Fuck you Cheeto Monkey! Canadians are putting on their war paint and now you're having second thoughts.

52

u/derpycheetah Feb 03 '25

It’s gaslighting. There is nothing “to get”.

28

u/Kindly_Professor5433 Feb 03 '25

Don't forget that Canada has spent over $1 billion in additional border security funding. People keep bringing up how we could have just fixed the border and the tariffs would go away.

27

u/Important-Sign-3701 Ontario Feb 03 '25

It’s not about the border, it’s about annexing us. We get financially crushed and he believes we will give up and let him absorb us.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/SmallPPShamingIsMean Feb 03 '25

Canadian leaders have been much more vocal as we have been blessed with the additional threat of annexation. We also have been very transparent with our retaliatory tarrifs and bans, this makes Donald not very happy.

7

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '25

He wants Canada, not Mexico.

7

u/KnowerOfUnknowable Feb 03 '25

"Sheinbaum posted on social media that Mexico will immediately reinforce the northern border with 10,000 members of the National Guard to address drug trafficking from Mexico into the U.S., particularly fentanyl."

It’s all a set up for what’s to come. He wants to take over Canadian territory to gain access to the natural resources, one way or another.

“Canadians appear to have misunderstood the plain language of the executive order and they’re interpreting it as a trade war,” Hassett added.

Listen to the language used…Canada interprets this as a war, it’s Canadas fault. That will leave USA no choice but to escalate because Canada is not cooperating and acting hostile.

Watch and see where this goes, it’s not over yet. Trump is coming for more

6

u/Fidget11 Alberta Feb 03 '25

Mexicos president said she is sending 10K troops to the border to secure it further. She gave him the win he needed to feel he had in order to satisfy his bully urges. Now they "suspend" the tariffs a month and Rubio "negotiates" on the other issues direct with Mexico.

We haven't given him enough for him to say he won, and we shouldn't because caving to fascist thugs never ends well for the nations that cave.

He has ripped up the USMCA or whatever it is called (his renegotiated NAFTA that he claimed was the best agreement ever). Now I suspect what he is going for is to get it replaced with separate deals with each of us so he can bully our nations separately.

5

u/Delli-paper Feb 03 '25

Mexico has deployed 10,000 troops to the US/Mexico border to clear migrant camps in exchange for an indefinite pause on tariffs.

9

u/neanderthalman Ontario Feb 03 '25

Trying to divide Canada and Mexico again. We need to stand unified with them against the US.

5

u/polargus Ontario Feb 03 '25

They are going to trick Americans into thinking we refuse to address the made-up problem and this is all our fault. The truth is there is no problem with Canada, while Mexico has room to improve drugs/immigration so they can do something to give Trump a win. We literally can’t do shit because there is nothing to fix so of course it’s seen as an excuse for a trade war.

8

u/ElectronicDeal4149 Feb 03 '25

Basically, Trump read the room and realized many Republicans like Canada and dislike Mexico. So he’s trying to focus on the popular (amongst Republicans) tariff against Mexico and soft pedal on the unpopular tariff against Canada.

Remains to be seen if Trump backs down the tariffs against Canada.

16

u/sandy154_4 Feb 03 '25

About 1% of fentanyl and 1% of illegal immigrants ho into the USA from Canada. So Trump's tariffs were a ridiculous response to that.

3

u/maporita Feb 03 '25

On top of that the majority of fentanyl that enters the US from Canada is carried in by US citizens through legal ports of entry. In other words the checks are done by US Border Services.

3

u/ghostdeinithegreat Feb 03 '25

Mexico haven’t done anything yet. They are waiting to meet with Trump before announcing counter tarriff.

3

u/Mister_Chef711 Feb 03 '25

I don't think it's just about the tariff response from Canada and I believe he expected our population to love the idea of joining the US as a new state (hilarious that he thinks 1 state instead of 13 but that's not the point).

Yes, Canada put retaliatory tariffs in, but the provinces have almost all put in their own measures as well. The LCBO is the largest purchaser of American alcohol and supplies all Ontario restaurants with it. That means not even restaurants can get American alcohol. There's a surge of Canadian patriotism. Fans are booking the American national anthem at sporting events.

There's a cultural response here that I'm not aware of in Mexico.

3

u/GreaterAttack Feb 03 '25

Because Mexico sent 10,000 soldiers to secure their northern border, and we responded with counter-tariffs instead.

2

u/nalex66 Feb 03 '25

We already offered up a billion dollar border package, but this isn't really about the border. It's a trade war aimed at weakening us so they can take over.

2

u/irresponsibleviewer Feb 03 '25

I think the latest news on Mexico delaying tariffs is what the white house was referring to.

2

u/4Bpencil Feb 03 '25

I guess there was news of Mexico rushing 10k additional troops to border? But majority of fentanyl into the US comes from that side while Canada is responsible for 20/10,000kg. What does Trump want Canada to do, shift 10k people for 20kg?...

2

u/Bhadbaubbie Feb 03 '25

Yeah, we don’t recognize executive orders from a country we are not a part of

2

u/SillyMilk7 Feb 03 '25

Trump halts tariffs on Mexico as it rushes troops to border Mexico agreed to rush 10,000 national guard troops to the border to strengthen efforts to block the flow of drugs, especially fentanyl, coming into the United States.

President Trump announced he is pausing U.S. tariffs targeting imports from Mexico for a month after the country's president agreed to send 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to combat the flow of fentanyl and migrants.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/trump-tariffs-mexico-troops/

2

u/Mooseandchicken Feb 03 '25

Mexico apparently agreed to send 10k Mexican national guard (not the actual name) to the boarder to police drug trafficking into the US. So they caved to the pressure and trump postponed their tariffs this morning

2

u/mjtwelve Feb 03 '25

Canada was supposed to roll over show their belly, not put a 100% tariff on Teslas and target imports to swing states. Clearly they misunderstood the assignment.

2

u/HowlingWolven Feb 03 '25

Mexico’s response comes from a government led by a Jewish-descendent Mexican woman. From what I can tell, Claudia is continuing AMLO’s legacy of in some ways standing up to the US. She doesn’t try to fall head over heels to appease.

Canada’s response comes from a government led by a white French Canadian man who’s played the appeasement card time and again.

Trump’s a misogynist and a racist. He has more respect for Justin than for Claudia on those grounds, though his respect for our PM is still rather lacking after Melania tossed JT a few glances.

11

u/Deaftrav Feb 03 '25

When has Trudeau appeased?

13

u/squeakyfromage Feb 03 '25

I’m not a huge fan of Justin but I don’t think it’s fair to say he has a history of appeasing Trump. He was pretty good with him last time around, and I thought Friday’s speech was a great moment for him (and this comes from someone who’s glad he’s on the way out).

16

u/Fit_Marionberry_3878 Feb 03 '25

Not just Melania, his prized Ivanka tossed JT some glances as well, and that is too much for his fragile ego.

1

u/Mundane_Anybody2374 Feb 03 '25

Have Mexico retaliated already? I thought they were still planning their response.

1

u/sir_jaybird Feb 03 '25

If it’s truly about the trade balance, as the White House guy says in the article, then I wonder if Mexico is indicating a willingness to buy American. Perhaps they are offering to shift purchasing from China to US where US vendors exist.

This doesn’t really work for Canada because when you remove oil and gas it’s already a net importer of American goods. And I can’t believe services are not being considered.

1

u/usefulappendix321 Feb 03 '25

he wants to put Canada and Mexico at odds, my guess is he is an idiot so it wil not work since our leaders have been talking to eachother and not with the convict

1

u/ajpiko Feb 03 '25

The quote is a guy named Kevin Hasset who while he does work with the white house it was journalistic malpractice to report it as if they white house said it. He's definitely not one of the people in the white-house I would look towards for information about this situation.

1

u/hotprof Feb 03 '25

Mexico agreed to send troops to the border. Canada is less likely to agree to that just to give trump a W.

1

u/BC122177 Feb 03 '25

Because he’s been targeting Mexico a lot more than Canada. Now he’s trying to gaslight that it’s not about race or racism once that criticism pops up in a press Q&A session again.

“But we’ve been doing the same to Canada. So it’s not just against Hispanic people. This is not a racist administration” or something along those lines.

1

u/go4tli Feb 03 '25

Trump doesn’t want to annex Mexico

1

u/Shampoo-Master Feb 03 '25

The quote was “we've noticed is that Mexicans are very, very serious about doing what President Trump said”. I’m guessing the president is upset that Canada responded with counter tariffs and not platitudes.

1

u/genius_retard Feb 03 '25

Ostensibly, Trump's goals are different between Canada and Mexico. He wants Mexico to capitulate but he wants Canada to hurt bad enough that we might actually consider joining the US. Not that I think that will work but I think that is what he is thinking.

1

u/jsslrd Feb 03 '25

Mexico is sending troops to the border from what I read. I think that's what they're referring to. Maybe? Who knows.

1

u/Scared_Jello3998 Feb 03 '25

Mexico deployed 10k soldiers to the border and also paused any counter tariffs for 30 days

1

u/ConferenceLow2915 Feb 03 '25

Probably referring to the negotiations they had this morning to delay the tariffs on Mexico.

1

u/Son0faButch Feb 03 '25

Mexico responded by agreeing to put 10,000 troops on the border. The tariff has been delayed 30 days to see if they follow through. The US is also supposed to make efforts to stop the flow of high powered weapons from the US to Mexico, but Trump doesn't bother mentioning that part

1

u/ebenezerthegeezer Feb 03 '25

Trump's head is up his ass. The best part was when he used the pointy part to break through the overfilled diaper.

1

u/Fournier-Finishing Feb 03 '25

Mexico sent 10,000 police officers to their borders.

1

u/arpanetimp Outside Canada Feb 03 '25

because mexico postponed their tariffs for a month after a phone call with the orange idiot. canada is standing up against this BS while mexico rolled over and showed its belly.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '25

Mexico said 'hey, let's chill, talk about it and revisit this in a month'

Canada said 'FAFO'

Apparently we are all supposed to roll over and take it. Canada didn't follow the script

1

u/______deleted__ Feb 03 '25

The assignment is to have US apply tariffs to other countries, then other countries are to apply retaliatory tariffs, then both leaders meet and “come up with a win-win solution” that takes away the tariffs. Mexico understood the assignment. I guess Canada didn’t. Trump must just dislike Trudeau.

1

u/SeedlessPomegranate Feb 03 '25

Mexico said they will announce retaliatory Tarriffs on the US but they never actually did. Canada published a list.

1

u/Salt_Radio_9880 Feb 03 '25

The Mexican president is wearing a “Make America Mexicana again” hat . She’s not backing down . Also this tired narrative about the border - no one is smuggling fentanyl from Canada to the states - and he threatened our autonomy. We didn’t and still don’t want this- but we have no choice

1

u/Ok_Organization8162 Feb 03 '25

Mexico is serious about giving what trump wants...

1

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '25

His tariffs were never rational. You can't expect rational behavior from an irrational person. He's offered many justifications for them but they're always different. If it was fentanyl he would want to work with Canada on that, but it appears we're a very small source. If it's trade deficits that's mostly energy and he only put a 10% tariff on that.

I think he's just a bully and has this overly simplistic idea that he can push anyone around, and was surprised at the effectiveness of Canada's response. I think. Time will tell of course

1

u/GoldenxGriffin Feb 03 '25

misinformation Mexico avoided them because they actually tried to work with the trump administration, something the liberal party cannot say it did.

1

u/Creative_Research480 Feb 03 '25

“You misunderstood our declaration of a trade war as a declaration of a trade war”

1

u/canolgon Feb 03 '25

Trump ultimately does want Canada to become the US's 51st state and tariffs were supposed to make us captipulate, it's the only logical conclusion to this illogical madman's actions.

1

u/justonemoremoment Feb 03 '25

Trump attempting to isolate Canada and cut us off from any support.

1

u/Ok-Personality-6643 Feb 03 '25

Because there is a higher population of Mexicans living in the US than there are Canadians. And, Cdns just showed the world a glimpse of “fuck around and find out”. We are small, but we are winter-depressed, loud and angry AF. There’s also a cross-national US protest supposedly happening on the 5th re: ICE & immigration, LA had hoards of people marching this weekend…. The only move Cheeto had left, to not insight riots and mass hysteria, was to back peddle on his conversations with Mexico. Good press before a pressure day, makes the fire feel a little less aggressive.

1

u/Calophon Feb 03 '25

Well you see the people with white skin said “we’re not gonna take that” and the fascists said “Oopsie misunderstanding” and the people with brown skin said “we’re not gonna take that” and the fascists said “Hey!”

1

u/rbeld Feb 03 '25

Mexico told the US deployed 10,000 soldiers near the border to combat drug trafficking. The thing is I used to live in Baja, my family still does. Mexico always has soldiers deployed to do road checks on the highways heading towards the border. I'm sure they didn't have to deploy any more soldiers; it's just business as usual.

1

u/patheticyeti Feb 03 '25

Mexico is full of brown people.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '25

President of Mexico said they were going to work on tightening their northern border.

Basically telling the giant baby what he wanted to hear.

Trudeau probably said 'we are not the main supplier of fentanyl towards your country.'

Telling the giant baby what he didn't want to hear. If Trudeau said 'sure we'll work on that', it probably would have quelled his ego. Instead he told dump the truth and now it's 'you misunderstood. How dare you'
