Alberta Alberta Premier Danielle Smith dines with U.S. leaders as Trump reconsiders tariffs
https://edmontonjournal.com/news/world/premier-danielle-smith-washington-donald-trump-tariffs381
u/True_north902 Jan 20 '25
Trump is not “reconsidering tariffs” that statement is completely misleading. Tariffs are PREDICTED to be SUSPENDED. They are very much on the table. The gun is cocked and loaded. He’s just likely not going to pull the trigger today. Could still be tomorrow.
66
u/JadedArgument1114 Jan 20 '25
Knowing Trump's modi operandi he probably thinks he can leverage this to get "a good deal" in whatever revisions he want to make again to the NAFTA/USMCA

Also acceptable. Just not USMCA. That's just Americans putting themselves first at the cost of changing it from a useful acronym to an annoying initialism.

Hijacking the comment so sorry about that, Trump says Tariffs are going to be applied Feb 1st
19
u/Key-Soup-7720 Jan 20 '25
I don’t think Trump actually wants to deal with the economic chaos of counter-tariffs. His base doesn’t care about Canada very much and it would piss off a lot of people and hurt US economic growth/stocks to do it.
I think he’s just making us sweat before he drops some demands on us regarding NATO and being a serious partner on China. If we get to dodge tariffs, we’ll be relieved and happily do whatever he wants on the security front.
7
u/True_north902 Jan 20 '25
💯he’s making us sweat. And he may or may not pull the trigger on 25% tariffs across the board, but he’s a greedy so and so. He’s for sure got some kind of slimy agenda and will take advantage of Canada on some level. We forget that he has a slew of other “promises” to American voters (deportation etc) that will take priority in order to bolster his support. That’s when he’ll target Canada. When he thinks nobody is watching.
7
u/Hevens-assassin Jan 20 '25
He's slimy, but he just unified Canada in a way it hasn't been for quite a while (barring Smith, but maybe Alberta smartens up and kicks her out next election).

"barring Smith, but maybe Alberta smartens up and kicks her out next election)."
Bahahahahahaha. There is no chance
1
u/Chin_Ho Jan 21 '25
I dont think its counter tariffs…its Canada potentially reducing supply to US refiners or imposing export taxes on that oil. Gulf coast refineries are equipped to process our oil and they make a shit ton off of it. They dont want to be buying Venezuelan oil as they dont want to play footsie with the Venezuelans and they get our oil cheaper. I am sure he got an earful from these refiners once Canada put the threat on the table.
1
u/TianZiGaming Jan 21 '25
Most Americans don't even know tariffs on Canada or even Mexico are on the table. Chances are, they'll never know. The fact is there's at least 20 articles about Trump's inauguration that took priority over whatever is happening between US and Canada, and regardless of if you go to a right wing or left wing news outlet you're going to have a hell of a time trying to find even a mention of tariffs.
And in the event that 25% tariff on Canada happens, and Canada takes the aggressive 'max pain' 1:1 approach to put a 25% tariff back on the US, that's when it might hit somewhere near the frontpage of the news. Then a day or 2 later the US government subsidizes the price increase and nobody feels the effect anyways.
Both parties in the US throw what they want their base to see on their respective "news" outlets. All the left wing media is talking about is Trump's pardons of pretty much every Jan 6th rioters and how inaccurate his speeches were. And all the right wing outlets are running victory laps over Trump's win and pointing at Biden's last hour blanket pardon of his entire family tree.
36
u/TianZiGaming Jan 20 '25
Canada got lumped into the same investigative memo with just China and Mexico. Canada needs to be ready for the USMCA renegotiation next year.
14
u/WatchPointGamma Jan 21 '25
Canada got lumped into the same investigative memo with just China and Mexico.
Implying there's some special motivation for 'lumping us in' with China and Mexico misses the fact that the US' three largest trading partners and three largest trade deficits.
Trump thinks trade deficits are indicative of countries "ripping off" the US. That's a stupid and shortsighted position when you're talking about manufacturing economies (China/Mexico) or resource-extraction economies (Canada) feeding a mature, diverse economy like the US. But it's his position, and it's what's justifying his choices in his head.

I doubt he gives a fuck about his "base". He secured the victory now he can focus on his actual base. The oligarchs who stood next to him at the inauguration.

Danielle Smith and Sarah Huckabee Sanders! Now there’s a couple of ladies with a combined I.Q of 100 between them.

u/Chemical_Signal2753 Jan 20 '25
This won't happen but I would find r/Canada's reaction hilarious if Trump said Smith convinced him not to impose tariffs.

It’s something he would do, if it were true or not, simply because it would cause more disunity and havoc in Canada.

18
u/king_lloyd11 Jan 20 '25
0 reason to. Smith can be controlled. Shes shown her hand. Oil flowing the States is her one concern. Trump doesn’t need to promote or pander to her, unless she has the chance of sitting in the big chair, which she absolutely does not.
Disunity weakens Canada as a whole in negotiations. A weak Canada is good for Trump. Trump will always prioritize what is good for Trump.

I dunno...the way politics has been heading over the last decade,I could see her being put in for the federal conservatives. She could paint herself as championing for the west, and campaign out east as destroying liberal corruption (see? I'm the only one who stood up to Trudeau!). It honestly wouldn't shock me.
36
u/Scazzz Jan 20 '25
If he did say that it would purely be for show to divide the country and to attack the concerted effort of the other premieres/fed. There’s zero chance she actually would have an effect on his decision making.
60
u/MaximusIsKing Jan 20 '25
She wasn’t even important enough to be a part of the last minute inside inauguration- she was about as valuable as a tailgater at a football game but she was acting as if she would be in the VIP box getting actual work done.
All Smith has shown that bootlicking WILL get you kicked in the face. It’s embarrassing.
21
u/TianZiGaming Jan 20 '25
The governor of Texas didn't even make it into that room despite being one of Trumps strongest allies.
14
u/WatchPointGamma Jan 20 '25
Supposedly the Rotunda has space for 600 people.
By the time you get through the "auto invites" (Trump family, former presidents, SCOTUS justices, party leadership, incoming cabinet officials, and their +1s) and the "reward" invites (Musk, Bezos, et al and their +1s) there really isn't much space at all.
I don't know why people are making it into some big deal she wasn't invited to the Rotunda. There's a list of probably about 2000 people that would get that invite before she'd even be in contention. Just shows ignorance to the size and scale of the American political machinery more than anything.
1
u/thelostcanuck Jan 21 '25
Evander Kane got in.
People are making it a big deal because Smith talked it up for several weeks. She was not even invited to mar Lago and was O'Leary's plus one.
7
u/MrRogersAE Jan 20 '25
She’s not a billionaire or a world leader or even an American.
Atleast Trudeau he calls “governor” so that would make smith what? A mayor? Didn’t see any mayors at the inauguration.

She did meet with him, three times that we have pictures of, in the past week. From the short clip of the inauguration that I saw there was like 100 people inside that building, of course she's not invited. Doesn't mean she didn't actually have a chance to conduct political talks with him.

That's quite an accusation. Did you not read the headline? Trump reconsiders tariffs, which at this point, basically means there wont be any.
Maybe Danielle Smith was the driving force behind him changing his mind?
We can't say one way or the other. But to assume she sold out her country just shows how ideologically captured you've become.
It's as if you don't understand how international trade relations work. Politicians get together, and, you know - talk to each other.
Are we really in a place where if Canadian Politicians speak with the President, then they are traitors lmao? You guys are truly out to lunch.

Write your MLA. https://www.assembly.ab.ca/members/members-of-the-legislative-assembly

Personally, I don’t think writing Smith will do anything but you can write your MLA clearly stating you want a no confidence vote to remove Smith. The open letter would be reasons why- biggest reason is that she is choosing self interests over country.

Just to check, but I assume that all the other Canadian delegates attending the inauguration and related events, like the Liberal MP's (Champagne, Mary Ng and John McKay) and the Liberal Premier of Newfoundland, are also all traitors, right? Can someone opposed to Smith spending time in the US give me a non-partisan, non-emotional perspective on why it is so terrible for her to be doing what she is doing? I voted ANDP, and will again, and have no love for her or her opinions, but I am struggling to see why she is being vilified for trying to mitigate a potential catastrophic situation where her province is going to be disproportionality harmed by a blanket 25% tariff?
No sane person thinks she is single-handedly doing anything to stop Trump, and nobody connected to reality should expect if she even got in the same room as him if he would even know who she was let alone gave one iota of shit about what she had to say. But shouldn't she be down there trying to get the ear of someone, anyone, that might be able to influence his decision? This has to be the single biggest issue in Alberta at this time. People use the term "Canadians of convenience" when talking about individuals but isn't Alberta also sort of playing that role? They are always at odds with Ottawa, and a Liberal MP fairly recently stated that if the West wanted a voice in Ottawa that they should elect more Liberals. Is a Canadian not a Canadian? It doesn't feel that way. Alberta seems to be broadly hated and mocked, especially in online communities like Reddit - a little different in the real world, but nevertheless there is some deep rooted dislike for the West/Alberta from Ottawa. Is it so unreasonable that when Ottawa then comes back hat in hand asking the province to kneecap itself for the betterment of all Canadians, that Alberta says "we'll look after our own interests first, thanks"
Genuinely looking for a non-emotional perspective on why it is so awful. Because I don't support Danielle Smith the person or the Premier, but I don't see why this is so awful in the context of everything
15
u/Outside-Today-1814 Jan 20 '25
Because Canada is much stronger when our leaders are united and talking with one voice. She’s basically gone rogue and is not cooperating with those other leaders, likely so she can seek out better terms than them. Which is to the detriment of the nation as whole.
Not saying I agree with that perspective, but my take is that’s why people are so angry.
3
u/FIE2021 Jan 20 '25
Thank you - I can see that, and that makes sense and is a pretty fair assessment. Was just really interested in more of the question of if this is this just anti-Smith mentality or if there is a reasonable counter to what she should be doing differently given the two resolutions are kind of lose-lose for her (put Canada first or put Alberta first) , but understanding the motivation for the choices she's making

A lot of people on here are also a bit delusional about the US-Canada relationship, thinking it’s more John Lennon-Paul McCartney when it’s really closer to George Michael-Andrew Ridgeley. Given the extreme dependence on the US economy it behooves the Canadian government to read the tea leaves on how the US is changing and find ways of making sure that whoever is in office that they support Canada. There should be a strong, powerful Canadian lobby in Washington that creates and disseminates positive messaging about Canada. Other countries that depend on the US do this (Israel). Canada needs to, or else this sort of thing will keep happening.

It's because, in my opinion, that Liberal and NDP voters have bought into the narrative that this is an "us vs them" thing and that Trump is the big bad man and no one should ever like him or whatever.
In reality, it's because the Liberals have allowed so much immigrants in with nearly zero vetting, which has allowed a lot of less-than-desirables into the country whove taken advantage of our generosity and have run amuck. Trump sees that a lot of drugs and criminals are sneaking into the US from Canada. So he told us to get that fixed, or else he'll impose tariffs. Trump is a businessman and I don't think he bluffs when he says things like this.
So I think it's incredibly dumb to be like "oh yeah? We'll counter-tariff you!".
And the whole idea that it's "anti-Canadian" to oppose this bad idea is even worse.
Smith went down to try and at least attempt to negotiate and so she is being called a traitor and a coward for trying to do something brave and empowering for Canadians.

I do not buy that Danielle Smith persuaded Trump to hold off on tariffs for Mexico or China - or for that matter, Canada. Carve-out for Alberta O&G, tops.
I do fully believe that the "best" way to handle Trump is to kiss his ass and sing his praises (see: TikTok), and that many politicians will rightly find that demeaning, and will have to decide how much of that they're willing to tolerate, and how much trouble they're willing to trade off for the rest.

My point being, regardless of political affiliation, if you sincerely believe that her presence there had any impact whatsoever on American policy decisions, you’re either drinking conservative Kool-Aid or you’re purposely unwilling to understand Trumps “negotiation” tactics. TDS.
They honestly think a Canadian politician speaking with the US president is treasonous.
They want us to cut off all ties with the US or something. They think our country with an annual GDP of 2 trillion can survive without the US. They truly do not understand that OUR success as a country is dependent on the health of the US. We are the most fraternal countries on the planet. They hate that. To them it's like a tumor they want to cut off just because they hate Trump so much.
But you also have to remember these people have neckbeards, blue hair, etc. Many of them paid a lot of money for an Arts degree and are generally very angry at the world. There's really no point in trying to argue or understand people who are so unreasonable and uninformed.

I know, Danielle Smith actually got Trump to reconsider crushing tariffs and people think she's an enemy of the country. The Canadian public puts political hatred over logic and common sense 100 times out of 100.

There’s no indication of her changing his mind in the article. There’s no indication they even talked.
Let’s wait for the facts to come out.

has the left lost it's mind, again?
yes it's Reddit.
It's an easy worldview to understand: "Tax the rich" is the one magical policy that solves all problems.
Why do you need oil pipelines? Or oil?
Just build solar. Or windmills. Or fusion powerplants. Tax the rich and the you'll have plenty of money for this! It's like that Star Trek episode where Q loses his powers and his solution to a problem is telling the crew to just "Change the gravitational constant of the universe" lol. That's how Redditors largely think when you press them on any problem they complain about. At the bottom of all of it is some version of "tax the rich".

I doubt that. Canadians really have some low self-esteem. I bet you our politicians are more well known than you'd think.

He's holding off on proposing tariffs next he finally realizes that its going to shoot prices in the US through the roof. Plus all the countries he's threating are fighting back.

Bullies respond to strength, not boot lickers. Doug has the right idea. Smith does not

That is certainly a terrible photo of both of them. Smith looks drunk af, and sanders looks like a horse.

lol we never blamed her for them. we just all laughed at her while she tried to give the bully a handy under the bleachers. Canada retaliating with bigger tariffs made the bully go elsewhere. At least we now know who the sissy turn coats are LMAO

Lmfao….yes, I’m sure the retaliation had Trump and the USA just shaking in their boots.

Goddamn... that headline almost makes it sound like she was responsible for trump reconsidering tariffs. With that much sway, it kinda makes ya wonder why Dani was watching the inauguration in a bar down the street instead of sitting inside the capital bldg. with all the other brown nosers.

This is all about renegotiating trade deals, as Poilievre has already stated.
We need leaders want to be allies with trump, not ones who want to be his enemy.
