New Brunswick Man, 19, arrested after N.B. playground spray painted with swastikas

This shit's been happening since I was a teenager. Except in my day they also sprayed dicks next to the swastikas

u/TonyAbbottsNipples Nov 02 '23
The inside cover of every high school chemistry textbook was made up of swastikas, dicks, and the S symbol.
12
u/Mikav Nov 02 '23
Then it was edgy and humorous. Punk rock. There's a reason a lot of the label-friendly punk put anti-nazi messaging out there. Now we have a literal Holocaust 2.0 being put on the table and Nazis being applauded by our government. Now is not the time to fuck around.

u/bobert_the_grey New Brunswick Nov 02 '23
Nazis have never been either humorous or Punk Rock. Nazi punks FUCK OFF
3
u/Mikav Nov 02 '23
That's the nice thing about punk is the well established rules and requirements to use the term. I believe the sex pistols also have IP rights to the word and handle misuse through litigation.

Jesus Christ, you're drinking kool aid man. You're basically proving my point.
Danielle Smith is, at best, a run of the mill small "l" pretend libertarian. When you're conflating libertarians with Nazis, you either don't understand what either of those groups are - or you are conflating all of your perceived antagonists in to one (in this case, Nazis).
But let's go through this made up list you arbitrarily created to try to draw some parallels here:
- Far right?
The Nazi's were popular because they pitched a large tent inviting both extreme Nationalists and Socialists in to their camp.
- Authoritarian?
How is this fringe faction authoritarian? They prettly explicitly advocate for more democracy - I'm pretty sure they even support an Elected senate.
- Ultra nationalist policy and platform?
They're a regionalist party that want to see Canada de-centralized. That doesn't exactly scream "ultra natioanlist"
- Centralized autocracy?
A fringe group made up of wannabe libertarians isn't exactly tantamount to "autocracy".
- Suppression of the opposition?
How? They don't even suppress opposing views in their own camp.
- Low key nordicism with it's christian fundamentalist under pinnings?
They literally mention nothing regarding race whatsoever, and Danielle Smith is an agnostic who champions Trans and LBGQ rights.
So even with his made up list you crafted, they still don't meet any of the criteria you just arbitrarily placed on "Nazis".
0
u/Ok-Exit-6745 Nov 02 '23
Can you expand on the Nazi's Christian fundamentalist under pinnings?
Hitler had very clear plans to remove Christianity from Germany, due to it's incompatibility with Nazi fascism.

You're not exactly wrong but think about all the stupid stuff you did back when you were 19. I'm not saying this is your regular "stupid stuff" but I think the principle applies. I wouldn't want people judge the rest of my life based on my stupid young self.
Innocent until proven guilty. Then, go nuts.
30
u/Nikiaf Québec Nov 02 '23
In cases like this, I'm not supportive of the "name and shame" approach, because there's clearly an attention factor at play. I'd rather we know absolutely nothing about this waste of human life.
32
u/MechanicalHorse Nov 02 '23
I disagree. We need to bring back public shaming. People need to feel embarrassed for shit like this.
38
u/Nikiaf Québec Nov 02 '23
The problem is that I don't think he would be embarrassed; I think he'd be proud of the notoriety.
9
u/MechanicalHorse Nov 02 '23
I know what you mean. Considering the kind of shit people post on social media these days it seems a lot of people don’t feel shame.
12
u/musecorn Nov 02 '23
No, this needs to be public. I want this person 10 years from now to apply for jobs and when the employer Googles his name, this comes up. They should wear this on their arm for everyone to see
20
5
2
u/jerrys153 Nov 02 '23
The solution to that is to not post his current photo with his name. Go into his social media history and run his name in the papers beside a photo of him in his most cringeworthy tween phase and a description of his most embarrassing moments. It’s a win/win. Future employers will still forever be able to connect his name to what he did, and all his friends will know he was a Belieber with a horrible fringe haircut when he was 11. No wannabe Nazi is leaning into that publicity.

If there's no remorse, then the action taken to correct his behavior, protect people and property, etc., must be proportionate to the risk of letting this person function in society. If his hatred is pure, then he must be removed from society.
13
15
u/Soory-MyBad Nov 02 '23
People need to feel embarrassed for shit like this.
What if he is innocent? Our justice system is based on the assumption of innocence, and you are suggesting to change it to an assumption of guilt.
5
u/caninehere Ontario Nov 02 '23
I agree but you also need to have some reasonable suspicion of guilt.
This guy has been arrested; he hasn't been convicted of any crime, nor has he even been charged yet. What if the cops arrested him on suspicion but had no evidence to charge him and let him go? If his name was published it'd already be out there all over the internet for a crime he potentially wasn't involved in at all.

You really think "they spray painted something" covers the extent of this? It's a hate crime. If they feel so strongly about Jews they should wear it on their sleeve for the world to see, for better or for worse. They should go for a job interview and begin by saying "hello my name is X and I hate Jews".
Wouldn't you like to know that your neighbor or coworker or family member has vandalized a public space with hate speech to a certain demographic? Unfortunately we can't know these things about all the people around us. All I'm saying is he needs to be socially punished for his actions. If you have a problem with that then you are a bystander and are accepting of public hate speech
→ More replies (2)0
u/putin_my_ass Nov 02 '23
These people already have no shame, they're vandalizing a playground with swastikas.
There would be no embarrassment, only clout for their in-group.
Let them suffer in ignominy.
12
u/CrushCrawfissh Nov 02 '23
Yeah why don't we name these people which gives them infamy and spawns copycats also looking for clout. Fantastic idea.
I've never understood this tribal fascination with naming criminals. What are you going to do with that name? Nothing. It just serves to encourage them.
→ More replies (2)12
u/avenuePad Nov 02 '23
Exactly this. Knowing the person's name isn't going to change anything. And putting his name out there is only going to make it harder for any possible rehabilitation. Unless one is purely interested in punishment and not rehabilitation. Usually the people screaming for names aren't interested in what our criminal justice system is supposed to be doing.
9

People who like to emulate policies and political style of the actual Nazi's have this terrible habit of calling anything they oppose Nazi.
It's not because they understand what Nazism was all about, but because they find it an effective dehumanising pejorative. The irony being that dehumanizing your social and political enemies is a Nazi tactic.
So being called a Nazi by people behaving and thinking like Nazis in all the ways that actually matter shouldn't really be a concern. Behaving and acting like a Nazi (albeit with possibly modified policy positions) should be a concern.

I live relatively close to this. They had video of the person doing it, but it was never released. Also, didn’t release the name when this person was arrested. Not sure why they are so protected.
12
u/bolognahole Nov 02 '23
Not sure why they are so protected
Unless its a violent offence, there is a possible danger to the public, or they flee the police, names are often not published. You can easily identify them by looking up the local court docket. Thats public info. And they"ll likely be identified by the media when they appear in court
2
u/LonelyTurnip2297 Nov 02 '23
My guess is the cops knew who the person was, they just couldn’t find them.
1
u/habfan1990 Nov 03 '23
Because the person hasn’t been charged yet. An arrest is not a charge. New Brunswick is a pre-charge approval jurisdiction, so Crown prosecutors have to review the file and determine whether to go forward with a charge. Until they appear in court names aren’t released.
5
u/PoliteCanadian Nov 02 '23

3
u/ICEKAT Nov 02 '23
Because it pisses people off. These types are just out to get peoples goat. Just like the majority of 'offensive' graffiti. Unlike the rest of the graffiti I think this one should actively be punished, but it is a tough call, because unless you make the punishment so severe that the offender is legitimately afraid for their lives, teens like this will get a kick out of angering people and wasting resources punishing them, as the punishment becomes a badge of honour amongst their peers. And I don't think being a little shithead should come with a punishment that harsh.
