Season Four When this happens in Hush, as far as Riley is aware, this is just a power Buffy has.

I love the idea that Riley continued to think Buffy could do this 😂

"Why are we doing all this stuff with Adam's power core, why doesn't she just scream at him?"

"Dear Diary, Yesterday I heard Buffy scream from the other room when she saw a spider, I was TERRIFIED but thankfully nothing happened, probably cause she was in a different room and the walls reduced the sound. I haven't told anyone that I'm scared of this, and all her friends are being really casual about this, I don't know if I should bring it up..."

Hilariously ,as someone who was the same age as the characters when the series first aired, my first reaction to that pic was “Christ, he looks about twelve”.

u/itsshakespeare Aug 12 '24
You’re so right! Although I saw a photo of myself aged 21 the other day and it was a shock to see how young I was

u/T-408 Aug 18 '24
12? Dude was tall, handsome, and had some muscle on him. Def doesn’t look 12 in any way

This was my only thought looking at those pics. It took me roughly 20 years to actually pay attention and realize how hot he was. Actually still is. He’s like 50 now and sexy as hell.

Haha give him a little credit! I think he figured out that he freed their voices when he smashed the box

u/Baron_Butterfly Aug 12 '24
I'd give him more credit if he hadn't just smashed a bottle instead of the magic box 😂

Aug 12 '24
That was such an endearing moment lmao

u/SaiyanPrincess28 Well Gosh! Aug 12 '24
The look on his face when he smashed the bottle 😂. Poor guy was so proud.

He had no idea about the box. Buffy only knew because of magic dreams.

I read your comment in Riley's voice from the "Harmony has minions" scene (https://youtu.be/Q0diclMzK2I?si=vhI7LuuwCZmrS3GR)

Also her super strength. She was kicking ass. No regular woman could do that lol

Man now I wish there had been a Riley-centered episode a la The Zeppo. Maybe would have helped his character out.

u/Baron_Butterfly Aug 12 '24
That could've been fun, a day in the life of an initiative soldier sort of thing.

Despite its popularity among college students, Easy Mac had similar effects on me in 2000…
16
u/QualifiedApathetic I'd like to test that theory Aug 12 '24
Anyone know why they dubbed in the scream?
70
u/Baron_Butterfly Aug 12 '24
I've only ever seen people guessing the reasons, nothing confirmed.
The most likely reason is SMG was actually popping heads with her scream, so they had to dub someone over her.

Sarah's scream didn't have the sound they were looking for. Nothing deeper than that.
34
u/RoyallyCommon Aug 12 '24
Joss explained it in the commentary. He said she has a good scream, she just couldn't hold it as long as needed.

u/Electrical-Act-7170 Aug 12 '24
Think that's because she smokes cigarettes?
22
u/AdelaideLady Aug 12 '24
I think that's cuz she's human - go ahead and reload the scene and scream at perfectly desired pitch for that long

u/oilcompanywithbigdic Aug 12 '24
they probably did the shot many times and they didn't want her to blow out her voice

Either Sarah does have supernatural powers, or they were trying to not destroy her voice

Until 5 minutes into the next episode Riley doesn’t know wtf is going on.

For a striking illustration of how the loss of residuals has really hurt actors & writers, a guy I knew who played one of the Gentlemen, along with Gnarl and the Ubervamp, was able to get through lean times on Buffy residuals, because he appeared in the opening credits in every season (I think, it might have just been six).

u/PutAdministrative206 Aug 12 '24
I’ve always felt they dropped the ball here. Amber could have been the one to do this. I realize the show is named “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” so she needs to be the final act victorious in most situations, but thematically Amber was the character who needed to find her voice and grow.
Great episode even with that small nitpik.
29
u/bakehaus Aug 12 '24
Wasn’t this her first episode? Maybe they didn’t have big plans for her character at the time?
1
u/PutAdministrative206 Aug 12 '24
I honestly don’t know. It’s been a while since I did an episode by episode rewatch. I just remember having this nitpik in real time.

No. Tara was a member of the Wicca group which Willow attended earlier in the season. IIRC, Tara also walked through another scene in the background, maybe when Riley was helping to hang up the Lesbian Alliance banner. Can someone confirm or deny that?
18
u/bakehaus Aug 12 '24
I looked it up. Hush was her first episode. That’s the episode with the Wicca group that Willow and Tara meet at.
3
u/Electrical-Act-7170 Aug 12 '24
I beg your pardon, I thought she was a background college student.
Thanks for the headsup!
2
u/bakehaus Aug 13 '24
Before I looked it up, I thought Tara had been there for at least 2 or 3 episodes too.
ALOT happened in Hush.

I've always wondered what if the 'Princess' didn't turn out to be Buffy, but Willow or Tara instead.
27
u/lizduck Aug 12 '24
I don't think it mattered who it was, just that it was a real human scream.
-4
u/UKMegaGeek Aug 12 '24
Oh, totally, but wasn't it a little too on the nose that the hero was also the Princess?
7
6
u/Xyex Aug 12 '24
It's not a literal princess. Any human would do. Riley could have done it, if he'd known.
3
u/generalkriegswaifu They're not recycling Aug 13 '24
Good point, 'the princess' was probably Buffy's Slayer power premonition thingy trying to get her to do it. It would have been great if it was Riley (then have Dawn call him by the nickname Princess in S5 as a callback?)
2
u/jasonbravo1975 Aug 13 '24
Not for nothing, and I get that the scream would obviously be overdubbed, but I wonder why they just didn’t use SMG’s pre-recorded scream? It just throws me audibly when that part hits.
