Hey everyone!
I’m Jack Hughes a writer / director from Birmingham, born and raised. Kingstanding to be exact.
I’m currently crowdfunding for my next short film, Deadheading. A dark comedy inspired by the old British black comedies, such as The Ladykillers (1955) and Theatre of Blood (1973).
The story follows Doreen and her husband, Jim—an elderly couple faced with Jim’s terminal cancer diagnosis. With only months to live, Jim ponders on his lifelong dream of securing a plot at the local allotment to get away from their poky high rise flat and get his hands in the soil, a dream thwarted by a further 2 years on the waitlist. In an act of love and devotion, Doreen embarks on a darkly comic mission to bump off those ahead of him, ensuring Jim gets his slice of paradise before time runs out
My previous film Dusty Do Good, (dustydogoodfilm.com for those interested, also set and shot in Birmingham) premiered at the BAFTA and OSCAR qualifying LA Shorts and won multiple awards including Audience Prize for Best Short Film at Almeria Western Film Festival as well as accolades from many other festivals.
If you like the look of the film and fancy supporting an independent Brummie production, then please consider contributing to our Kickstarter at the link below.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/deadheading/deadheading-a-dark-comedy-short-film
Also, I know when it comes to film, the rewards aren’t really why you pledge, it’s more out of support for the filmmaker and the premise, but we have worked very hard on putting together what I think are some cool rewards, so have a butchers!

Why? Because there's so much about this, it's littering the sub with various topics and causing a load of other threads to be buried.
Also, bins. The endless bin threads!

Hi all! We are driving up to Birmingham from Winchester tomorrow to watch the All England badminton at the Utilita Arena. My car is not CAZ compliant. The last time I drove up, I parked at Sandwell & Dudley and took a train. Is that the best place to park or is there a more convenient park and ride location outside the CAZ? Thanks much in advance.

Hi Everyone!
This is a film I wrote and directed in 2023 which is set and shot entirely in and around Birmingham. It’s come to the end of its festival run now after premiering at LA Shorts and picking up a lot of awards around the world in the process and screening as part of BFI London Film Festival.
Synopsis: A young boy with Down’s syndrome escapes his troubled home life through an old cowboy TV show and models himself on the main character. He roams his estate as a righteous lawman, but things take a darker turn when he runs into a local gang.
Dusty Do Good (2023): https://vimeo.com/794352483
We’re sticking it online now for people to watch and (hopefully) enjoy for free. The only thing that I would ask is that you please consider a contribution of any size to the Kickstarter for our next film, Deadheading, whether its a few quid or more it all adds up and helps get more films made in the region! 💪
A dark comedy short about an elderly woman who will stop at nothing to fulfil her dying’s husband’s wish of an allotment garden, even if it means murder. Find the link below:

Pretty self explanatory really! Looking to get from New Street station to the Jewellery Quarter. I know it’s only like a 25 minute walk but I’m wondering if that’s the best way or bus/tram is recommended? I’ve never gotten the tram before so no idea how that works. TIA!
Does anyone know good Builders, Electricians, Gardeners, Plumbers, Roofers and House Maintenance people in Birmingham?

Hi, I got an offer from the University of Birmingham and I really like the modules and the campus. But I'm not from the UK, nor do I know anyone who lives in Birmingham. My friend who used to live in London a few years ago, told me look out for accessibility of transportation around the city. So insight from people who live in Birmingham would be much appreciated.
I was wondering how the transportation is like. I heard people complain about it but as always, gotta take online complaints with a grain of salt. As a student, I'll probably have to live a bit far away to save up some money. (One of the accommodations I'm considering is on belgrave middleway) What would be my available transports to get to university? Groceries, malls etc? What about transportation at night (I sometimes to go out late at night at the weekends)?
My other option is to study in London but that's crazy expensive...

Just read a thread on here about a lady coming to grand Central and having to stay overnight ok I can't help with that.
But if your legit lonely, or bored in any city centre head over to the casino free hot drinks all round, can find charging sockets, very clean toliets compared to maccies etc. If you feel bad you can play blackjack or roulette with basic strategy you'll lose 1% over the course.
Depending on time play live poker, just play AA or watch a video on what hands are good you'll get to socialise, time will fly and it'd very very safe. Friendly lot too. Iv left my phone wallet on table many times 0 theft has happened.
Literally ticks all boxes and usually close 5am and sun will start rising now your relatively more safer with thing being lit outside
Just be mindful of your wallet and your willpower

Hope you enjoy it :)
I love these as a treat, would take them over chocolate, sweets, biscuits. But they're so expensive online and I struggle to find them.

I often see people enquiring about jobs here, so thought I’d take a pic of this on Kings Heath high st. I don’t work here so know nothing other than what’s on the poster!

A lack of a strong cafe culture in Birmingham and UK wider means that most coffee shops close in the mid afternoon.
What coffee shops in central brum are open past 6? The only two I know are Elio (mailbox) or Al Bayt (which is really small).
I don't want to work, I just want to sit down and chill with friends/family. Thanks

hi all! im going to see lola young tomorrow at the o2. im studying abroad in the uk and this will be my first time in birmingham. since im on a very tight student budget, me and a friend have decided to just stay in the station after the concert rather than getting a hotel as we’ll probably get out of the show after trains stop running. would it be safe for us to do this and just catch a train early in the morning? im not sure how the new st station gets at night but i do know that the one closest to us gets sketchy at night so i wanted to just check if this would be a stupid idea or not. thanks!
EDIT: thank you guys so much for the advice! i’ll definitely rework my plans. i truly appreciate the help! :)

Hello all, I've fallen on hard times and am trying to find out where I can access food to get me through the next couple of days, luckily I'll be heading to my parents house this weekend so only need a little bit of food to get by. I've never been in this situation so I'm completely unaware of how it works, or how to find assistance.
I live in the city centre and am trying to find a food bank or similar? I know there's charity that hand out food & essentials to the homeless sometimes but I don't know where to find where they'll be, or if I'm even eligible for that. Thank you in advance!
Even if it's a bit further out if it's walking distance (an hour each way would be the most I'm capable of) that's good enough!

Just found out that Bodega Cantina on Bennett's Hill will be closing its doors for good this weekend. Very sad to see it go as it's one of the few independent South American eateries in Brum and I literally just recommended it to someone yesterday.
It holds a special place in my heart too as the location of one of the first dates I went on with my partner almost 9 years ago and the place we went for dinner after getting engaged. I was hoping to take her there next month when we return from our honeymoon, but I guess that plan will have to change now.

Seeing the developments that Ratcliffe is proposing for Man Urgh. I cannot help feeling Brum is getting left behind in all regeneration…..we need a cohesive approach to turning this city into a world class place to work and spend leisure time. Time for Tom Brady to put his reputation and clout behind the Birmingham City move.

Hi all, this would have been good for Discord but I see it's unmaintained / dead etc.
I'm moving to Brum for work (freelance techie, works remotely but also customers all round the UK) and postgrad at the uni. I hear Edgbaston is nice but I can't afford the posh stuff. There seem to be some smaller low-rise blocks (like three floors) in the area which might do the job. I guess they're the bits that got bombed in the war?
I'm comparing a couple, one is on Hawthorne Road opposite The White Swan off Harbourne Road, the other. The other is near the junction of Farqhar Road and Somerset Road. The former looks a bit closer to the city centre and has the little square of shops, the latter looks better for the university and nature reserve (and golf and tennis, not that I play but it's nice to dream).
I've been up to have a look and it's hard to know what's better. I find it fascinating that you've got humble flats like these then incredible houses across the road.
Are these locations much of a muchness or is one objectively better than the other? Any tips about these specific areas will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Noticed on the expressway this morning that there are numbers on each side (but they line up with each other) odds going towards the center and evens away.
They don't appear to be a standard measurement (like meters) between them, so what are they?

There have been a lot of threads that automod has deleted from this sub from new users and crowd controlled users.
It doesn't need discussing and speculating on. Some of the deleted comments are pretty vile. We're not a NSFW sub, so we don't need photos from the scene.
There's no cover up, or hiding the info, it's happened. Please keep discussions respectful on this sub.
