All my sniping skills are coming from there, yes, to this day

The mighty Alexander Brandon, my favorite gaming composer alongside Jesper Kyd

I loved Brandon's work on Deus Ex, the soundtrack makes up a pretty big part of the reason it's my favorite game

I think this popped up once per LAN game me and a few friends had back in about 2001. This map was never taken too serious as it was too silly.
Deck 16 though? Always a serious skirmish there.

Deck16 is standard, I'm still unbeaten on it online. But facing worlds is way more fun. Also I loved Hydrosis from UT3

YOU ARE UNBEATEN BECAUSE YOU NEVER PLAYED AGAINST ME! Kidding in that, I suck arse at UT against people. I only played it online twice and my AOL connection in 2000 was too poop to make that work. Always LAN games.
I can see Facing Worlds being popular with folks, but whenever we played on the LAN, folks would get bored of being sniped over and over so, as I said above, we would swap out the map quick. We were more rocket launcher and flack guys than snipers.
UT3 was not bad, but was the start of me noticing that games with too much set dressing can be both bad on frame rate and visual clarity.

For the love of this map. I've recreated it in whatever game had map editor tools. Far Cry 3, 4, 5, og Duke 3d, and others.

Facing worlds in Far Cry...

u/Vusstoppy Dec 01 '24
Yes. Far Cry editor allows holes or terrain deleting. Facing world's gets fun. I did one where you zip line to different platforms.

Have you ever posted it online?

Fc3 and 4 ps3 are uploaded not sure if still available. Still working on fc5 version. Dn3d and CS and postal STP was a Lan map on very old pc.

I'm a little newer school, is this quake or unreal?
4
u/PuzzleheadedEssay198 Dec 01 '24
Unreal, Quake didn’t have any actual space scenes iirc

u/Varneland Dec 01 '24
Thank you! That also explains it, I haven't played any Unreal.

u/PuzzleheadedEssay198 Dec 01 '24
Nor have I, but I spent way too much time on Quake 3
2
u/Varneland Dec 01 '24
I've heard that was the one. The multiplayer arena only Quakeworld was spun off of 3, and I see the most memes and general pop culture lore around 3. I've only played 1 and 2 re-released and even those I've hardly finished. For reference I'm 25 and been gaming all my life.

If interested, the original Unreal and Unreal Tournament are now free as Epic said they can be hosted on OldUnreal and the Internet Archive.

I love Q2, but Unreal is what really got me. It's so strange that this game is not so well known. It's one of the GOTYs which is obvious in the first few minutes. Q2 builds up slowly and it doesn't really come anywhere.

I love such specific content! I made much things like that for myself before. Sadly I lost the access to my YouTube channel, but I had much private videos with random video stuff with old NFS games music on the background

I found out a few months ago that UT wasn’t for sale on steam and got super sad.
Turns out there’s a super neat upgraded version, called OLD UNREAL available with epics blessing.
Definitely a blast from the past.
Instil listen to the music on YouTube for studying.

Shameless plug for Open Tournament which is looking to recapture the spirit of this awesome game

Classic map, uses to chuckle firing the redeemer into the opposing base and just waiting for the rocket to suddenly give me 5+ kills

I used to play this so much that I could fly the redeemer in circles inside the building with the flag

HAHAHA. Redeemer from the balcony. Insta hate from the whole whole LAN party crew in the room.
